Unfortunatly we all need antivirus software on our computers. The product above is the personal (single PC) version of the corporate package I use at work. I am very impressed with it.
We used to use Network Associates TVD (McAffee) but Trends offering blows it away.
What you get is a complete package that not only updates itself whenever you are on-line, but it also includes a personal firewall (this can be turned off)
There is a 30 day trial available so if you don't have any antivirus software, please give this a go. And if you're attending the LAN and you don't have any antivirus software you will be dealt with by TeaLeaf.
I use AVG AntiVirus that is also free and gives regular free updates. It can also scan emails.
You can get it from //www.grisoft.com (it works with XP nicely)
hey blue ball i just started using that, i installed it and it found 3 viruses and 2 trojens that my old 1 didnt detect.
and yes my old 1 was up dated every time there was an update for it [which there hadnt been 4 a while so i decided 2 try a diffrent 1]
Its good at picking up naughty javascript in web pages too :-)
Although I do not visit the sort of sites where you would find the aforementioned Javascript. Cough! yes, that's it a friend mentioned it to me!
I use Computer Associates EZAntivirus -- I get updates for that about 3 time a week 8O
Recently recieved ICSL certification ( First AVsoftware to recieve cert )
Program and first years updates = $19.95
Yearly updates renewal = $9.95
When you consider updates come a the rate of 2 / 3 a week then that's a pretty good deal.

The problem is that no anti-virus software in existance will stop a new, previously unknown virus from propagating and delivering it's payload. The reason is that if it's a new peice of code which is not stored in the DAT file tables of your AV software - it will not recognise it and will allow it straight through (hence why viruses still exist)
Heuristic scanning won't really help in it's current state - so if you hear a new Virus Alert, the best thing to do is disconnect yourself from the Internet, and go out / do something else for 2-3 hours. By the time you get back, the A.V. Doctors will probably have written and made available the DAT file updates.
Cheerio!
