Hello all, I am In The market for looking for a new monitor and after going to the Lan and seeing some of those beautiful curved monitors I now really want one of these. I was wondering if anyone knows a good place to get them from ? I am happy to spend around £600 and am looking for the best I can really get for this, looking for a monitor around 33-35 inch maybe and with the resolution of at least 2560 x 1080 and better if possible but not to fussed if not I know they get really expensive when upping the res. If anyone can help or has any ideas please let me know and thanks ever so much for reading you awesome lot : D

What does a curved monitor bring over a flat screen?
I will probably be changing from my current ASUS ROG Swift to something with freesync as I'm very disappointed with G-SYNC right now and hopefully will upgrade when SQ42 is released and hopefully with AMD's Vega.
What's the problem with G sync ? I'm considering getting a monitor with it on.
http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?42722-Monitors/page3
The latter part of this thread has some discussion about curved monitors as well
If I enable GSYNC then there is very bad flickering in some menu screens in OverWatch, not the game itself.
It I exit the game while this is happening, then the flicker happens all over the desktop for about 30 seconds and then "fixes" itself.
You also get it in some games like ESO all the time, mainly at the top of the screen.
I'm also 95% certain my next GPU will be AMD based as their tech looks for exciting for Vulkan and DX12 based titles for the money. So GSYNC will probably be gone totally for me at that point.
These days I play with GSYNC turned off, but don't notice any tearing ... maybe because the 120 refresh rate is nice and I have enabled the 2nd GSYNC feature ULMB (which is only possible when GSYNC itself is disabled and uses a refresh other than 144).
Given the choice my requirements in monitors are now 144 refresh, 1440p screen, ultra-wide. Now thinking of adding curved to that, but I can't seem to find a curved ultra-wide with 1440p. 1080p yes. But as the ultra-wides are shorter (ie less verticle height) im guessing this isn't much of a concern as the DPI is still similar?
Thanks for the info. I'm looking at dropping a grand on a monitor so I have researched a lot.....a ******* lot.
There are no curved ultra wides at the moment with 144Hz at the res I'm looking at (3840 x 1440), so Gsync will be needed to keep it stutter free. The free sync ones only go up to 75Hz and I was so disappointed with AMD after waiting for the Fury X that I aint waiting again.
There have been a lot of issues with flickering on G sync due to driver issues, which I think are sorted in the latest versions, may be worth checking, cos Nvidia seem to release drivers on any day with a y in the name.
Oh I forgot to add that OverWatch doesn't properly support 21:9 , apparently the devs thought it gives too much player advantage..........
I used to see a bit of flickering in the DOTA2 menu, but driver updates fixed that long ago and I haven't seen any flickering in Overwatch - could this vary between different monitor manufacturers?
If you've got the budget, and the GPU oomph to go with it, I would heavily recommend G-Sync. I'd find it hard to move away from G-Sync now that I've got it, unless AMD/ATI raise their game to the degree that I'd consider switching away from Nvidia but I can't foresee that happening in the near future.

I think we both have the same ASUS ROG Swift?
Mines only powered by a GTX770 though.

That's the one, guess its a quirk between models of GPU then (I'm on a 970), how annoying :(

Did you contact Asus twisted? Could there be a fault with the actual monitor when using gsync? That or you could try a different gpu.
On topic I'll also be getting a curved monitor next. They up the immersion from what I have seen, I really like them.
Top of the range at moment are the

Those are the two that I've narrowed my choice down to.
If i had money spare i would have bought the x34a already....dont really think there is much difference between either of them

i already have 2 24" led monitors is it worth me ditching them for a 25" curved monitor?
That's two very nice screens there. Twisted personally I wanted a curved screen because I only have enough space for one mo iota and I wanted to make it a really good one, after seeing the ones at Lan they really looked awesome. I feel they are a bit more emersive nothing crazy but would love to play arma with one of these and a head tracker to get a fully different experience while playing that game.
One of the main reasons curved are better is because if you have a large screen the edges of the screen can appear distorted due to the angle you are looking at it. A curve brings the edges in so the pixels remain more equidistant from the eye ( Obviously you need to be right in front of the screen, one of the reasons curved TVs are a bit of a gimmick tbh). Add to that the improved immersion with your peripheral vision and better FOV and its a totally better gaming experience. If the curve is too pronounced; then things like CAD and photo work can be difficult cos straight lines can sometimes appear, well, not straight.
In answer to you question Sneaky I would much rather have one larger screen then two small, must be a good size to appreciate the curve though.
Very roughly speaking, two screens will give you more utility where as one curved would give you greater immersion.

Makes sense for a computer monitor, a single-user device with a fixed viewing distance.
Less so for a television.

In addition to the above comments, I'll add 'No' in answer to your question. There's no way you should replace 48" of monitors with just 25".
In order to get a mixture of the utility and immersion mentioned above, you need to go for something the 34" size which are typically 3440x1440 (or 2.39:1 ratio) - these are similar to the ones you saw at the LAN. The sheer resolution and size gives the utility, and the sheer width of the curved screen gives the immersion. A 25" curve is not really wide enough to give you that feeling of immersion. A wider 34" works because it extends your field of view to a level where it starts to feel like it is wrapping around you.
If your two current 24" monitors are 1920x1080, then together they span 3840x1080, which compares to the 3440x1440 of a typical 34" curved monitor. So a 34" curved would give you a not entirely dissimilar dpi but without the hassle of having two monitors and that annoying bezel in the middle of your view.
If you can find a monitor with a resolution of 3840x1080 packed into a 25" screen then you'll match what you currently have and also lose the bezel - but you might struggle to read the text on the screen as it would be mighty small!
sorry my bad that was supposed to be 35 not 25 slip of the finger.lol
thinking of changing one of my 24" monitors for a 28" 4k monitor to get the most out of my 1080 card, or a 35" curved.
i could have the option of the second monitor for viewing ts/webpages with the immersion of either 4k or curved could'nt i.
You won't get the same immersion from 28". Contrary to popular female belief, that 6" is important! Anyway, never mind the length, it's the width that gives the immersion. :getmecoat:
Widescreen also leaves more a lot more headroom for a second monitor (4.9m pixels for a 3440x1440 widescreen, versus 8.3m pixels for UHD-1 4k monitor).
You also need to be aware of scalability - Windows 10 has some which works ok now and you'll probably end up going from 1:1 to something like 1.5:1 (i,e, 150%).
But not all programs will be able to scale appropriately, so you need to do a check on compatibility to see if any of your programs/titles/packages won't scale and if they are deal-breakers. Be prepared to work with some incredibly small windows and text at times if they do not scale on UHD-1.
Read this article to get an idea of what I mean:
https://pcmonitors.info/articles/the-4k-uhd-3840-x-2160-experience/
At the end of the day whether or not you go widescreen or 4K is very much personal preference.
Go see both and see what you like for what you want to use it for.
If 4K looks like what you prefer then do your research on which programs will and will not currently work at 4K.
Figure out of any of those are deal-breakers.
Then choose your monitor.
My 2 cents:
If I were changing my monitor right now I'd be going down the curved widescreen route. :2cents:
And remember, in 2 years time you'll be asking if you should swap out your 4K monitor for an 8K UHD-2 curved monitor running at 7680×4320 with 33.1m pixels! :roflmao:
I changed to a 4K G-Sync 27" https://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-acer-predator-nvidia-g-sync-ips-3840x2160-4ms-350cd-m2-10001-dp-hdmi-2x-2w-speakers-4x-usb-30-out
If you have a GTX 1080 then it's worth going 4K in my opinion. Even unoptimised games like Star Citizen I can get 35-40 FPS on Very High settings.

£499 from £799
All the ultra-wides I look at are 2560x1080‎ ..... my standard 16:9 monitor is 2560x1440 ..... I'm not sure dropping res for width is worth it for me.

You got the same trouble I have twisted and it looks like we need to drop around 800 plus to get a better monitor size wise and resolution wise. I was looking at the apex predator which is 35inchs curved screen and 3560 I think the res was ( well is 3 something) but costs around 999.99 so very expensive for one
Just pulled the trigger on one of these :https://www.asus.com/uk/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG348Q/, be here at the end of the week.
I'll let you know if it's worth it..
Look epic man, let us know.
Agree with u guys rogue and twist.. I'm not interested in losing resolution in either plane with a monitor upgrade. Simple won't do it.
Screen arrived and set up, first impressions....OMFG IT'S AWESOME.
Are there a lot of games that run straight off at the 3440 x 1440 resolution ?
and how is it on the main windows screen
Only tried BF1 and Doom so far but all run 21:9 no probs, have to increase FOV to get full benefit. I understand some older games may need some fiddling about with but Windows is fine and scales automatically.
It is a thing of beauty.
Damn man... if I had a spare £1500 (500 for the GTX 1080 you'd need to run it!)...
Dedicated Lion's monitor corner at the LAN anyone? :norty:
I think I had one of these before anyone else? I was the first one to bring to a LAN for sure. I have had it for almost 2 years now and its a love hate relationship.
For gaming I get frustrated sometimes as very few games support it natively which I want to play. For example fallout 4 doesn't support it natively and if you hack it you end up with glitches. Overwatch and SC2 do not support it nativelya nd there are no workarounds for these games as blizzard see it as hacking to get more screenspace. For these games having the extra real-estate is a waste and I find myself not buying games that I want to play because they don't support the monitor.
The curve I actually am beginning to find annoying as I am using it alot for photo editing and it does warp the edges of the screen as the pixels are larger at the edges because of the curve. This is annoying when you are trying to show people photos on the screen from afar who are not sitting exactly in front of it. It also causes issues with colour cast because of viewing angles for the curve. You cant sit off axis far away from it and use it as a TV really.
The big up size is actually productivity, for work its amazing! I have multiple VM's open and webpages all on the same screen. The PPI is spot on with 34 inches at 3440x1440!! This is the main use case for it.
Would I go 4k... Personally no as there are scaling issues in windows still and the PPI is too high unless you go for a crazy large screen. I do like the ultrawide flexibility for productivity and I am not much of a gamer these days so the benefits outweigh the cons. Also my 780 TI is getting a bit long in the tooth and I am not planning to upgrade it for a while so 3440x1440 is pushing the hardware I have with most games on Medium-High. On 4k this would be Medium-low with the 33% extra pixels.
If your a true "gamer" stick with 1440 monitors with 144hz refresh would be my advice but if your a jack of all trades or into simulation games go for ultrawide. If your into media production go for a 5k monitor so you can view videos at 4k and still have a UI.
Cheers,
DZ.
DZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good to see you've risen from the dead.
How are the LAN photos coming on? Please can you dropbox some for us :)
That's a really useful long-term review DZ, cheers.
My problem with 4K as it stands is that it pretty much forces you into the high-end GPU market - most mid range and certainly very few low end cards are going to be able to drive that resolution.
I'd rather stick with 1440, rather than have to buy a £500 GPU every couple of years.

Lo and behold it fixed the problem. Can't believe I didn't try that earlier when I first noticed it and had many monies to spare!
