Hey guys, I've just got ARK and while I know the basics I'm still quite inexperienced, are there any tips you guys might have for me?

Welcome to Ark dude!

It's going to seem rough as heck in the begining, get comfortable getting slaughtered by the dino's initially. Take your time, punch trees, gather bushes, make your basic tools and enjoy it!
I know it isn't SUPER active at the moment, but there are still a few of us that play regularly, I'm not actually on that regularly at the moment, but Ark is still the one game I love most here!

Are you playing on The Centre? or Scorched Earth? SE is by far more tough, but Duvel is regularly on there and he'd be happy to help out I'm sure :g: The Centre is still tough, but it is still a beautiful and tropical place.

Let us know how you get on!

Let us know if you need any help when you join the server.
For the rest, me and Snokio play quit a bit on Scorched Earth at the moment but I do drop back to the Center from time to time also.

Have fun with dino's

Punch/axe some dodos to death for raw meat. Cook it on a campfire for proper food, or save it, knock out a dilophasaur and use it to tame it.

If you punch a dilophasaur in the face til it falls unconscious (and before it kills you - pick a low level one!) You shove raw meat and narcoberries in its inventory. It'll eat the meat, and you force feed it berries ('remote use item') to keep it unconscious. Once it has eaten enough meat, it'll be tamed and will follow you around as a pet / bodyguard. The 'torpor' tells you how close it is to waking up. Keep this number up by feeding it the narcoberries while it eats the raw meat to tame it.

If you can learn the ropes of taming you're half way there :) there are some great wikis and videos on YouTube that explain the basics of taming better than my words can!

There's a few basics which would help determine the help you need.

As Uncle Duv has said, are you playing on The Center or Scorched Earth? - Personally I'd suggest the center for a wider diversity of biomes and dinosaurs.
Do you want to play this solo or do you want a 'starter pack'? - Solo is more challenging but more rewarding.

If playing on The Center then perhaps spawn on Tropical Island North which is the easiest biome, Tropical Island South for one step up and then you can migrate.

Go with the basics - the first thing we were told on an Army Survival Training Course and is still common mantra:

You can survive for 3 Minutes without air or in icy water
You can survive for 3 Hours without shelter in a harsh environment
You can survive for 3 Days without water (if sheltered from a harsh environment)
You can survive for 3 Weeks without food (if you have water and shelter)

Stick close to the water's edge.

You'll spend an inordinate amount of time harvesting berries in the first instance.

I'm happy to logon and play with you in basic survival mode if that would help and once you've learnt the basics then leave you to it.

Thanks for the help guys! I'm going to try single-player for now and then I might look into co-op later on.

Honestly, you're going to find single player SUPER punishing if you are meaning your own hosted game, unless you change the difficulty to seriously make it easier on yourself dude. Our servers all run a slightly kinder world, so that the time spent taming etc is hours not days.

I hope you enjoy it either way, it's an incredible game!

Your old man's character is lying limp in my shack on South Tropical Island, I think he played for an hour.

Hey, that's 3 hours to you!   I never did get into that game, I tried three times and then gave up.   Horses for courses.

Dex, go multiplayer!
