So next Thursday, 26th Jan 2017 we will at 7pm GMT convene in the system of Meene, at Felice Dock.
This post is constantly evolving so check back and reread regularly and try and prep before the meet up. Maybe in pairs would be fun over the weekend.
All the community knows about this mission so far. Spoilers a plenty but I suggest reading the ship and prep info so you don't waste your time arriving under spec. The event is 1 week into a 4 week mission.
You can go out and get a head start as you can help others on the night if you are already advanced. Nothing lost doing this.
As each person needs to gather artifacts from the site and store them on your ship, you should do this in solo mode so you have personal access to the objects for collection. Afterwards we can group up to start scanning obelisks.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/300054-Alien-archeology-and-other-mysteries-Thread-9-The-Canonn?p=4672165&viewfull=1#post4672165
The group mission plan is not to all meet at a point and then fit out ships for half the night, preparation is key to having the time on the night to explore.
Stop now if you don't own Horizons, we will be landing on a planet, so you need the expansion to do this. â,¬18.99 on kinguin.net.
The destination is 240Y from Meene. That means you need a 15LY capable FSD to make you trip on 20 or less jumps or suffer the extra hops. A Fuel Scoop will be required otherwise you'll have to find stations along the way to refuel.
A Cobra with an A class FSD would be ideal. A vehicle hangar is needed, with a vehicle. Some cargo space. Minimum requirement. It may not require a fighting ship.
I can advise on how to get this fitted and cover off any other questions on TS.
It would be good to have a few people try this out.

Some facts on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/5m9t09/thargoids_first_contact_videos_theories/
So unannounced and totally unexpected, Frontier have just thrown aliens into Elite. Apparently the ship is massive and in VR mode is stunning. It's pretty much a standard encounter so far but you can scan the ship and it's frame shift wake.
The way to attract the ship is by acquiring an Unknown Artifact (UA), basically an alien object from a USS (Unidentified Signal Source) called Anomonly Detected Threat 4, pick up the artifact you find in space and plot a course to the nearest station. These were first discovered around Merope System within a 150LY radius from Merope.
You'll be interdicted out of Hyperspace, not Supercruise like normal.
If you want to know more about these UA's they are objects that can damage your ship whilst in your cargo hold, unless you have anti-corrosive protection on the hold especially designed to help ship such objects.
You can take them to a station and sell them to the market, and they start to damage the station.

This is pretty cool! That guy's jaw must have hit the floor.
I watched a few videos and certainly the level of excitement was pretty high. I'm not sure how much other content is out there, Frontier don't actually put everything in their patch notes, they try to leave it as a surprise and a certain event triggers the new content.
I hope they have some thing there to continue the story.
On another note: http://www.edrpg.co.uk/ is kickstarting this month. It's a book based RPG with many crossovers to the game, I'm excited to see how this will be able to work with the game and bring a story with it. I liked the Elite novels as they talked about the ships and stations, factions and bases in the game.
So this first sighting started a trail of clues and uncovered a mystery as to the origins of the Guardians. It lead to the site of some ancient ruins with obelisks that contain lore and information. The site is:
Ancient ruins 1
SYNUEFE XR-H D11-102 | 1 B
-31.7877
-128.9711
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd-6JiHzJW0 - Pick up the mission before you leave so as to qualify for the reward.
From there the mystery can be picked up and followed. There is no conclusion yet, only the promise of a 100 million CR bounty for everyone who gets to the bottom of the challenge.
It's 390LY from SOL. so any ship with 15LY jump range can do this quite quickly.
I'm up for running a search and discovery mission to investigate this and see if we can uncover a few of the clues.
I know not many people are online in Elite a) at the same time and b) playing with dMw people. If a few folks would be interested in having another go, this could be a nice group mission to undertake.
Anyone interested?
I would be. Will need to dust off my ship... best to arrange a time for this as I'm snowed under with shifts atm it'd ideally need to be planned in advance :)
I suggest next week Tuesday evening. Avoid landing on other gaming evenings. Best we start sooner than later so it's still around.
Even if we can get 3 or 4 people it'll be fun and boost their funds up over 100m cr.

I'm out of the country until Wednesday next week :/
i would be good for next wednesday
Yeah I would be happy to get the old vulture out and do a group mission, it sounds like a blast if we can get some good numbers.
Also enjoy you time away chaos .... will miss you :D
Thursday?

Things you'll need:
- Horizons. We need to land on a planet!
- A ship with a size 3 optional slot spare for a hangar and SRV
- a jump rang of at least 15LY to avoid going insane.
These are prep work items for everyone. So we do these in advance. Otherwise we will spend the evening doing prep work.
You can optionally accept the mission in advance and jump into orbit at the target planet. I recommend doing this.

ahh horizons.....
Yep shyt. But if you were really into the game you'd probably have bought it for a fiver at xmas.

Thursday I can probably do. Time to hop on Elite and remind myself how not to die too much.
I can pop on for this, but will be more like 8pm after the little ones are in bed.
That's fine. If participants orgsnise in advance to avoid lots of jumps then it should all come together.

No idea this was even in the game!
What kind of ships would you recommend?
Obviously that includes the latter.
I've not played for quite a while, but I think my current ship has that range .... but no firepower at all.

Well, if you're flying tonight I guess I'll do prep work tonight and join you another ....
Thanks for helping me get kitted out with my new exploring cobra albert!
No problem.
To summarize.
Cobra or small medium size ship of your choice.
A class FSD - A class Fuel scoop
Size 4 16T cargo bay minimum 24 useful
Planetary Vehicle Hangar
SRV buggy
Advanced Discovery Scanner
Detailed Surface Scanner
(Both scanners optional but nice to have)
D class everything else for lowest mass.
Guns optional, may need larger power plant and A is best option.
I have an Asp, useful for everything!

Maybe I need to check if the battery is still okay to start my ship. I believe my Python has most of whats needed.
Probably find that it's up on bricks in some scummy outpost somewhere.
Of course that might have been when we were testing Horizons and I might not have a buggy.
Nice to see you back on Elite last night Lib. That makes 4 people having a go at this exploration mission.
I think there is no reason to wait until Thursday to get kitted out, pick up 2 missions in the Meene system and get onto the target planet. The more folks we have who have collected their artifacts, the more fun the search and scanning will be on Thursday.

Here's a very helpful video on how to get this mission going and avoid over confusion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX1KXXr56VU
(He says a cargo rack is useful, it's actually critical, and you need 12 free slots minimum to pickup 2 x of each of the orb, tablet, casket, totem, urn and relic).
At Meene, Felice Dock, you auto pickup the main mission and can separately pickup the community goal which is free money as both missions benefit from rewards for the same items scanned.
We really need more people to come along in order to get the boost in scans from the numbers in the group. 3 or 4 people only will lead to slower spawn rates of the obelisks. I tried this in the Mobius group which has thousands of members and with a full instance the spawn rate is one every minute which is about just enough time to scan and swap cargo around.
Anyone thinking of joining in on this should get to the point of having picked up their 2 x 6 artifacts in solo mode from the ruins before Thursday at 7pm GMT then hop into the Private group called Albert, request to join if you haven't already.
:D

Purchased Horizons and fired it up. I'll be a while as I reintroduce myself to the myriad of controls I used to operate without thinking
😎 I'll be online this evening if you would like a refresher course. Most controls are the same up to the wing commands you used. You just need to map the buggy controls.

With the community goal completed and several hand ins of the alien ruin mission (with no special setup that any other pilot couldn't achieve) I managed to earn a total of 60 million CR over the weekend.
I think I handed in community scans 4 times and benefited from being in the Mobius PvE group and a lot more people being in my instance than the dMw groups. The larger the group even idling in the instance will reward you with every scan another group member achieves for the community goal. (The alien ruin info scans are a different matter, that's 1mill CR per data and lore extracted personally).
Actually, having been doing his for the last few days as well, I think the buggies could be used for interesting impromptu racing.
With some interesting terrain and enough people we could mark out turning points with our ships and have a buggy racing circuit.
I've also made quite a few million over this weekend and there are still just under 3 weeks of the personal scanning event left.

There are also small ship race circuits documented on the Elite Forums, apparently great fun. Turn up at a planet station, all buy the same ship and have a race through a canyon keeping below the top edge of the canyon.

INOVIK A 2 A apparently has a canyon that stretches 500Km!
With the end of the community event to supply aliens scans, here is the latest Galnet bulletin:
https://community.elitedangerous.com/en/galnet
This was the sub goal added to give more reward for participants. The main objective for 100m CR is still to uncover the mysteries of the Guardians is still active for a month!
With the sub goal done and dusted it will lead to another hint as to other ruin locations and perhaps other things unknown.
Further down on the Galnet report is the economic state. Like all things Elite, every piece of info has a purpose. If you now trade in boom states you earn more of course but rep increases double. Also you could use this to gain rep say with an org that unlocks an engineer. Twice as fast, twice as nice, Asda price!
Look at the Galnet daily for new leads!

News hot off the press, some more potential dig sites! Note: they are 415 - 720LY from Meene! Pick up the mission first or make a big mistake :D
Galactic News: Ram Tah Discovers New Sites
24 JAN 3303
Following his recent appeal for data from the Synuefe ruins, engineer Ram Tah has released a statement:
"Using the data contributed by the galactic community, I have succeeded in accessing the monolith network. But although I have detected a number of further Guardian sites â€" which is very exciting â€" I have not been able to divine their precise locations. All I have been able to do is narrow the field to a handful of systems â€" specifically [Synuefe ZL-J d10-119], [Synuefe XO-P c22-17], [IC 2391 Sector ZE-A d101] and [IC 2391 Sector GW-V b2-4]."
"Locating these sites is of central importance to our ongoing research, which is why I am encouraging the galactic community to explore these systems. Together, we can further our understanding of this fascinating race."
Just a few pointers I've noticed from a few guys who just started back playing, maybe these will save you time and effort (and probably frustration):
After landing at Felice Dock in the Meene system, you will find average stocks of ship parts. Better to kit up in a High Tech Station like Jameson Memorial for A Class FSDs if you have a Founders World Permit
You'll travel from Meene to this system on the planet 1B - Synuefe XR-H D11-102 Planet 1B land at coords -31.7877, -128.9711:
1) If you plan to land on a planet, you need a planetary vehicle hangar and an SRV in your ship. Optional Internal
2) You'll need a fuel scoop. Optional Internal
3) An advanced discovery scanner and a detailed surface scanner are the money making tools of the explorer, have at least the discovery scanner and scan every system you jump into religiously, and don't die before you hand in your scans! Optional Internal
4) When you get to a planet, seek out rocks to mine for materials. http://wavescanner.net/ - How to find rocks on a planet, very helpful!
5) You need Sulphur and Phosphorus to craft fuel for your SRV and Iron and Nickel to repair your SRV. https://eddb.io/system/bodies/3524806 shows our desination system bodies and what they contain for mining materials.
If you run out of fuel more than 3 mins away from your ship you'll die.
If you blow up due to not repairing, you'll die.
SRV refuel and repair requires preparation, stock up before scanning the ruins!
6) Galaxy Map - In the tab that looks like a little cluster of start, on the MAP view. Filter by Star Class and leave selected the first 7 star type, uncheck the remainder and check the plot route according to filter at the bottom. You will now only jump into scoop able star systems.
New weirdness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN1jypLjGCw&feature=youtu.be
You get a critical warning at 10% on fuel, 10% is still quite a long while before you are up the creak.
If you do run out of fuel and don't have the mats to create it, then hopefully you should be able to get to your ship on reserve power or send and recall it from orbit within the time. It will land very close if it can.

Nice :D
Cheers for the help. I will be back to complete it in a couple days.
Welcome, I'm sure you'll get the hang of the SRV, I had a thought, did you enable driving assist? If you did, turn it off, it causes spinning more when it's on.
Also, if you don't have at least 3 x refuel and 3 x repair for the srv, go out and shoot some rocks. Trust me if you have to fly back to Meene just to refuel your SRV you'll be annoyed.
On and off it still annoyed me :woot2:
I'm actually really keen to jump on again though.. playing with the hotas is great fun! I'll be back on when life allows :)
It'd be great if we organised another night to meet up.. was good having a group last night!
Just collected my first 6m payout from this. Peanuts to some of you maybe but still an awful lot of cash for me :P not bad!
Sounds like a good haul to me chaos. We heard yesterday that's there was more relics found, wondering if people wanted to do another search for this one ? I would love to tag along this time now I am ready for it :D
You do need to be little careful. I was exploring the relics recently, and I was probed... and it did a lot of damage ;0

At least you got pictures for the insurance.

Interesting read about alien probes. If you read it through you'll appreciate the subtlety of Elite mysteries and the effort required to solve them. And the fact it's always a team effort:

Been playing around a lot with this game. On my most recent expedition exploring one of the ruin sites, I made a slight miscalculation with my SRV jump-jets.

Yep! I have upgraded from the Asp... firepower >>> jump range.
Unlock Felicity Farseer and upgraded your FSD. If you have lots of basic elements in your materials store it'll take 12 or so G1 upgraded to get to rank 3 gear with her.

I'll look into it later then. I've yet to play with the engineers, have no idea what I'm doing with them xD
Here is some info on how to complete the ancient ruins mission.
Important point is he doesn't think the mission will be nerfed or removed upon release of 2.3, just fixed.:
At the moment, if you have 2-3 other people tagging along in open/private group, you can get it done by visiting just 3 sites...- Alpha in COL 173 Sector KY-Q D5-47, Planet 9 A (-15, -103)
- Beta in Synuefe XR-H D11-102, Planet 1 B (-31.73, -128.92)
- Gamma in Synuefe TP-F b44-0, Planet CD 1 (59.33, 15.10)
It will take way more than 4 hours though...I would estimate about 20, if you know exactly what you're doing, and the potential for it to take a lot longer is high. I don't even want to try to estimate how long it took me, but I was often having to just wait for people to show up in open, and was doing all of the scanning myself, and was having to figure out a lot of the combinations myself as well, so there was a lot of time dedicated to waiting and trial/error that I would save my next time through. If you want to play in solo, it's not possible yet. At a minimum, more alpha site variations need to be found, and I imagine more beta/gamma sites as well. The reason why is because with a group of people (at least 3, but 4 or more seems to work even better), the obelisks will start changing from their default configuration. Even more so if you are all logging in/out of the game. This is very likely unintended behavior, and I'm betting it'll be fixed in 2.3.So the gist is, each obelisk has a specific combo of artifacts needed to "unlock" it. I've been trying to fill in the blanks of this datasheet here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ovrDiY9WZw4SXaSMe13tODwHQdEnxLoVIj4ceGrpGQ8/edit#gid=1144069221) (CombinationsDataSheet tab), but I was using a different numbering system so it's slow going, will probably have it filled in by tomorrow. I was able to get all of the Ram Tah decoded messages filled in.So there's two ways to do it...1) Go around and scan all of the combinations yourself...I did this myself for all but the last combo.2) Your best bet for getting it done quicker is to have 2 of each type of artifact in your cargo hold (12 total). Have one or more person in your group drive around in SRVs, while the others fly overhead in their ships. When the SRV scans obelisks, irrespective of what the SRV has in the cargo hold, the people in their ships should get credit for the scan since they have the correct combo in their cargo (although I think only one pilot may get credit at a time). This could be a bug as well, and if so, expect it to get fixed in 2.3.You have to do that for all 101 possible combinations. So in short, it takes a long time, and isn't really worth it just for the credits. If I were you, I'd probably just wait for more sites to be found, so that people have a chance to optimize the best path for completion in solo. Because at least that way you could follow a predetermined path, and know exactly which obelisks need to be scanned, and where....and take your time over the 4 week mission allotment to complete it. It'd actually be a nice little exploration trip to some ruin sites, with a good reason to use your SRV. Whereas right now it's a bit of a crapshoot, where you're having to rely a lot on other people, and it can be frustrating waiting for that one last obelisk you need to turn on for hours. If you have a group of people you want to try to complete it with, do it before 2.3 because I'm betting a lot of what I mentioned will be patched by then...otherwise just wait. I don't think that mission is going anywhere, and don't see any reason why they would nerf it since there are far better ways to make that much money in the game.Hope that helps.

Sorry, it wasn't my work, but I posted the OP from Reddit now. I think it will be more interesting in 2.3. Possible to do it as an exploration mission as exploration is supposedly becoming more rewarding.
