Title: What ship to go for after the Mk III Cobra?
Post by: Sn00ks on February 17, 2017, 10:07:45 AM
I've shuffled about in the Mk III, occasionally getting an ASP or Type 7 for one-off cargo and mission runs, for a while now but I'm wondering if I should aspire to greater things?
I like the versatility of the Mk III so basically looking for something similar with better bits.
Is the MK IV much better, what about the Python or Clipper?
Any sensible suggestions?

depends on how many credits you have

The Python is (IMHO) an excellent all-rounder.

I will have as many credits as it needs, assuming it isn't a stupid amount. Currently I have about 50mill in the bank and am grinding the relic thingy which nets 13mill a run.

A decent Python build looks to be about 190mill plus a further 10mill for insurance. So that makes a further 12 relic runs left to do.

You don't need to sell your beloved Cobra MkIII. 1 more ruins run in the bag covers the costs of it totally upgraded.

In between the Cobra and Python, the Diamondback Explorer is pretty versatile 2 mediums and 1 large hard point, over 30LY jump, lots of slots. It's got more fire power than an Asp and can land on small pads, not quite as tough but slippery.

The only down side to the Python is it's jump range, it's good in a fight and has pretty good cargo capacity, it ain't no explorer although I never used one, I went straight to the Anaconda, it's similar in many respects to the Anaconda, utility ship. You don't need to kit it out with 191m CR of gear right off the bat. If you can get together 100 you'll be in good shape.

You can all but kit out a Python for 80-90 Million. I've just done that and it's specc'd up pretty well.

I think I've already tricked out my Cobra to pretty much A grade stuff throughout.

And there's me teasing Sith about his Diamondback. Hmm it does look like a prospective replacement for the Cobra. One large gimballed beam laser and two gimballed multi-cannons should be sufficient. And it works out quite cheap, relatively.

and you dont have the stress of replacing a Python that cost nearly 90mil to fit each time you blow up

I'm thinking the Keelback might be worth a pop, for a medium ship with decent firepower and fighter hanger support.

I was initially thinking about an Imperial Clipper too. But the hard point placement is apparently not very good so ideally you'd have to go for turrets.

There is just too much choice.

I keep coming back to the python as a general all-rounder.

Some ships require a certain rank in the major factions. Clipper, Dropship etc...

See here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Empire/Ranks there are some ships including the Clipper you need to have a rank up with the Empire to buy.

You rank up by completing missions or trading with Empire stations. You lose rank by working for the Federation or Alliance, or by failing missions. When you are eligible for a promotion you get a rank up mission appear in the mission list, some are at a certain system as per the article.

You need to be quite high ranking to get the Clipper or Fed Dropship, and even higher for the Cutter or Corvette.

Dude, I went down from my ASP Explorer to a Diamondback Explorer, and I've kit it out like this:
http://roguey.co.uk/elite-dangerous/ships/diamondback-explorer/eq=4a4a5a3c4a3a5cam0164e0064e0133a0043c0011c020i080d000000000283c0032d0032d&pri=111111111111111111 (http://roguey.co.uk/elite-dangerous/ships/diamondback-explorer/eq=4a4a5a3c4a3a5cam0164e0064e0133a0043c0011c020i080d000000000283c0032d0032d&pri=111111111111111111)

It flies like a dream boat, nimble, strong, and does everything, and it only costs 750k to replace which is just so awesome!
I swap out the hull reinforcements for a shield when doing planetery stuff, so that i can still have the hangar and vehicle

I think this one is the one Sith meant to link. I've been using it for a while and it's good. I reduced the plating down to reinforced and it has good standard interdiction survivability. If i'm exploring I swap out the hangar for a detailed surface scanner.

Its a good ship. In terms of moving up though I'm considering the asp. But I'll be keeping this one.

So i thought i'd continue my questions regarding ships here since this thread seems more relevant !

I'm looking at upgrading my Cobra too, was about to by an Asp Explorer when i noticed this thread and the general opinion seems to be try the Diamondback instead ? In the other thread Albert suggested the Asp is good for all except combat, is this also true of the Diamondback ? And since multiple ships are now more of a thing since my return to the game (thank god we can have them delivered to where we are), what is the "best" midrange combat orientated ship ?

I have about 20 mill in the bank and i'm about to head to dMw Alliance space to see if i can be of any use.... i'm guessing i'll need something more combat orientated than the Cobra at some point ?

As always any/all info and opinions welcomed :D

Well in the end I went for an ASP Explorer as my next ship. So far so good. I have used it during the recent war and also for going out hunting varmits. I basically rip out all the cargo  holds and stick in hull and module reinforcement modules instead. With 2 x class 2 beam lasers and a couple of class 1 multi-cannons it seems to be quite capable, especially if you have a bullet magnet like Lib with you to take all the punishment so you can leach xp and credits :D
Jump range is very good and hold capacity is sufficient.

Now saving up for my next ship which will probably be a Python.

Maybe i'll go for the Asp then and save for a dedicated combat ship next like the Python. Any idea roughly how much it cost you to fully equip your Asp ?

At a guesstimate around 25mill credits but that is with most stuff upgraded to class A. But then it depends if it's kitted out for mining or combat.

That's good to know i'm already in the right ballpark credit wise then.... just waiting for 2.3 to come online and i'll get spending :)

As a side note... i think i have access to the Founders World place being a kickstart backer ? if so am i right in thinking they sell ALL ships and modules at one place ? and at a 10% discount ? so it is maybe worth a trip to buy/equip an Asp if it's going to cost 25 mill.... and i only have 22 mill :g:

Founders World or somewhere Li Young Ru is in power, as his stations give 15% discount on all ships and parts.

Cheers Bert, but am i right in thinking Founders World sells EVERYTHING in one place ? ATM for this next ship, which for me is my first Cobra upgrade since launch, that's more of a draw than the extra 5%..... i actually quiet enjoy the upgrade process, but i'm quiet happy to give myself a leg up to mid ship size this time in order to speed my way towards the really big stuff...

Is there any way to confirm i can 100% access founders world ? or was it any kickstarter backer ? just checking before i travel there just to find i can't get in...

Just check your permits in the right screen, click 2 or 3 views to the right on the first panel. Founders World Permit should be listed.

I'm there... and bought the Asp, and i'm moderately underwhelmed .... i seem to have a VERY slight increase in all areas over my Cobra, but nothing to get excited over, the big crunch seems to be that to get a 1/2 decent fuel scoop i have to use that size 6 slot which means i lose most of my cargo capacity, am i missing something ?

I am wondering if to write it off as a hasty mistake and just keep using my Cobra until i can afford something even bigger...

The Asp can get up to 38LY in a single jump but if you dial that back to 34LY your fuel efficiency become endless and a small scoop does the trick. The Class 6 slot doesn't need to be wasted on fuel scooping. Lots of different ways to enhance the Asp, but too many to list.

OK Bert, i'll stick with it, to be fair it took me a while to decide how to equip my Cobra, i somehow seem to only have 26LY jumps available, though i have stuffed every slot with something ! i'll try switching out that Class 6 fuel scoop though and see how it goes.. cheers

Try doing some Engineering ;-) start with Felicity Farseer and get to level 5, put a G5 higher jump distance mod onto a, A class FSD.
