Title: Cloud Data
Post by: Snokio on July 29, 2017, 03:28:58 PM
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good cloud data service, I'm a cheapskate and dont like spending money unless I have to OFC. I have already used all my free 15GB of Google drive, Shall I just pay the £15 a year or is there another service that can offer more?

Thanks

Got your Mega (50GB) or pCloud (20GB) free accounts?  There are others too, but these two popped to mind immediately.

A probable long shot but if you were in the market for a cheap Chromebook, you'll get a 100 gig free for two years when you register your first Google account.

I am currently looking into CrashPlan as I need a lot of cloud storage for photo backup during travels... could be an option.

I used to use Crashplan, but I came across a situation where on larger more complex directory structures it reached a point where on restore it missed certain deeply embedded files.    Crashplan response was in essence 'meh, tough'.   So I stopped using it.

Crashplan has just announced it is leaving the consumer market and and if you have a account with them you might get the carbonite deal.  Any one have any views on carbonite?  Used it?

So... with them leaving the market... any good alternatives? I am looking for a way to back up many GBs of photos whilst travelling abroad.

I'm still a fan of dropbox. I've tried several (including carbonite) and it's still the one I prefer.

The problem is with 6+ months of photo and video, 1TB is not enough... I am looking for significantly more storage that I do NOT need constant / speedy access to.

I thought it was 2gb free to start?

How are you planning to access the cloud storage while abroad to upload?

Me a lot more than 2gb and also find dropbox a little flaky from time to time

Terabytes Pen, I need terabytes :P

Will have reasonable access to the internet... was banking on overnight uploading. If done every few days its only gigabytes at a time...

What you need Sir is either Google Nearline (https://cloud.google.com/storage/archival/) or Amazon Glacier (https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/)

Neither is a back up service like Dropbox or Carbonite in that they don't sync folders to the cloud. They are both archival services where you upload  your stuff to them and the data gets stored away long term. You then retrieve the data at a later date. It's the cheapest way to store stuff.

I use Google Nearline for my photography which is charged at $0.01 per gig stored per month. You pay again to retrieve your stuff at $0.01 per gigabyte. It only works for data you touch occasionally and you have to add your stuff manually, so no auto sync. It's not for regular access but as a place to dump pictures that you can retrieve when you get back I think it's ideal.

My entire photo library (ten years commercial work) costs me £4.50 a month!

Brilliant. I had looked into Glacier but that seemed expensive. If Nearline is as cheap as this, it is the winner. Thanks Smilo I will look into it now.

If that doesn't work out and you can cope with less,  I have a few 1TB dropbox and 1TB OneDrive accounts (free with Office 365) where I could give you access to a folder to upload your pics you could then download on your return.

Some are full but others have a few hundred Gig free.

That's ok, thanks for the offer pen. I'm taking 6TB of HDD space.. am anticipating a lot of data as we will be filming a lot of 1080p stuff...

Smilo it seems these services are for businesses only. I will look into it more tomorrow and if there are (legal) ways around this. Not something I have any knowledge with.

No problem. I was wondering why you were asking for so much space for photos. Now you've mentioned 1080 filming I see your point lol :thumbsup2:

The offer's there anyway as needed, even if it's just for selected photos you want to share with friends and family whilst away.

If you struggle to sign up as an individual I'll whack it through the company if that helps and we'll sort at a later date.

I may well be in touch then Pen, if I can't find a way to do it solo. Thanks :thumbsup2:

Toby I only just saw you originally asked about carbonite.  It looks good from what I can see but doesn't suit me personally as the android client does not allow any sort of uploading.. unless I have misread that. Again, I will look into it.

I use it through my Gsuite account which costs about £2.75 per month per user, which I use mainly for business looking email. I didn't know it wasn't available for regular Google accounts.
