Title: Email Server is Down
Post by: TeaLeaf on January 31, 2004, 11:37:15 AM
The email server we installed and to which I have been carefully adding @deadmen emails addies over the last week has been, err, hmmm, accidentally borked when someone tried to add another domain to the server.  It looks like we lost all the settings and may have to install a new email server, we were using iMail.  If you have any suggestions then please shout, otherwise we'll shout for your details again real soon.  This time we'll even keep a copy

I have been pleased with the help and support I got when using Internet Exchange Messaging Server. How about this... it is free for up to 75 users!!!! Even with the free version their support has been good. have a look at their website here (http://www.ima.com) for more info. Current version is 7.1 and all you need to do is to register the FQDN of the server you wish to install it on and they send you a free licence file. It supports IMAP too :)

Here (http://www.ima.com/pdf/iems/v7/relnotev71.pdf) is a link to the release notes which will give you an idea of what you get. The free 75 user version is called "Standard Enterprise" version.

i forgot to say that it works in Windows or Linux so if we ever change platform again things should be easy. It works with Apache (included) and all Admin tasks can be done through a web interface :D

Looks like that will only do one domain too, so I'll go search for some more.

Aaaah. I see. You need a mail server to support multiple domains. Now I understand.

But... from the IEMS release notes mentioned above I present:

Domain Administration

IEMS has always been able to support multiple domains on a single machine.
Administration of these domains is done through the mail system administrator
interface. IEMS 7 adds the ability to delegate domain administration
(message store, distribution list) to sub-administrators.

OK, I didn't look at the web page you posted second as it coincided with me posting my reply!  The homepage offers a button to compare specs and that led me to a price page unde rmulti-domain admin - that's what I followed!  I'll take a better look.

The table at the bottom of this (http://www.ima.com/iems/specs.html) page suggests that the free 75 user version will support mutli domain admin.

However, it might be worth dropping them an email to check what you need. I have found them to be a friendly and helpful bunch :)

I have found that page 24 of the Site Planning Guide (http://www.ima.com/pdf/iems/v7/spgv7.pdf) gives a bit more info on multi domain support.

I use desknow (http://www.desknow.com) for my own use.

Free if you don't want certain features. Very reliable too.

TL

I've had a play with my mail server which is the 75 user free version. It DEFINITELY allows you to create extra domains. What I am unsure of is whether that will eat into the 75 users. What I mean is that it could be that I could create 3 domains each with 75 users but I think it more likely that the total number of users across the total number of domains I create will be limited to 75.

This may have an impact on what you are planning to do with the extra domains. However, you can definitely have the extra domains :D

Oh, I checked the CPU usage with my server running everything (DNS, DHCP, FTP, IIS, Apache, Steam, HLDS, McAfee Anti-Virus, Direct Update and ALL OFF THE MAIL DAEMONS including IMAP) and it was under 2% and that is on a PIII 866 so IEMS doesn't seem to hammer your server when you run it :D

TL if you do decide to go for IEMS as the solution then drop me a line and I'll give you a heads up on a few things that will make the config a bit easier. Although it is pretty easy anyway - there are a couple of little silly thing that can take a while before you get to the "Aaha" stage :).

iMail is back up and running - it *does* support multiple domains. RTFM. ;)
All mail is operational again, the settings were saved :D

Nice work anyway BB (someone had to say it I suppose)  :D  If iMail borks again, at least you will have done the ground work.  ;)

 Apologies Blueball. I was so caught up in getting iMail to work I neglected the fact that you were preparing an alternative.

Sorry mate.

No problems m8. I found the exercise really useful because I realised that if my own server went FUBAR then setting it up again would have been a nightmare as I had sod all written down :)

I have continued with my little aide-memoire for that reason and have actually found out lots more about the software - like Blueyonder do scans for open mail relays every single night and my postmaster account was getting 63 emails each night telling me that they were trying but failing because I have relaying closed off - I have found an area to deny their IP access to SMTP and voila, no access for their abuse scanner and 63 less messages for me :D
