Title: New mobile, how to get over contacts and pictures etc...
Post by: DuVeL on June 08, 2018, 09:40:29 PM
Evening all, it´s time for me to have a new mobile, just got myself an Samsung Galaxy A5 (I know, not the newest), currently having a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini.
What Apps or programs do you guys use to store contacts, pictures and such or how do you switch them over (also WhatssApp messages and so)?
Last time I switched over phones and such I lost everything.

I'm now looking at Samsung smart switch but haven't used it before.
Any recommandations are welcome.

You can do whatsapp by using google drive, also if you use google for all you email and contacts they will go accross. For SmS I used Backup and Restore from the android market and it worked perfectly. Hope that helps

Hey mate, if you use Google Contacts to store your contacts, then make sure they sync in settings, they'll automatically appear on the new phone. You can also check if they're syncing by accessing them on a normal web browser on your PC. Just add a contact and see it appear on the PC.

Come onto Discord and I can talk you through it if you like.

If you're storing contact on the SIM itself, you need to transfer these to the Google Contacts via setting as well, otherwise if you change SIM you lose the lot.

The google synch is the best.  I switched to a new phone a month or so back and all I had to do was log in on my new phone and all my emails, contacts, calendar appeared and then all the apps I had installed got transferred onto the new phone too.  My involvement in the process was literally just logging in with my
google account.

Agreed use Google.

The way it works is that you need to have been logged into a Google/Gmail account on your previous phone.

Your contacts should then be available in the Google contacts app on your phone and also in Gmail on the web. Google basically syncs everything in the Google Contacts app on the phone with your account in the cloud.

When you log into your Gmail/Google account on your new phone it will pull all your contacts from your account in the cloud down onto your new phone. Sorted. Of course for it to work your contacts need to have been synced with Gmail in the first place. Samsung annoyingly tries to duplicate a lot of what Google already does in Android, and often makes a mess of it. So you might not have added contacts to Google but to Samsung. In which case, as I'm guessing now, you should be able to do a similar sync using a Samsung account rather than a Google one ???

As for Photos there is but one app to use. Google Photos. Every photo I take on my mobile gets synced up to Google Photos in the cloud as soon as I take the photo. If you set the app to save 2048 x 2048 rather than full size then you have unlimited storage, If you upload full size then it comes out of the 15 Gig of space Google provides. Rather than write a dull description of how Photos works here's a link.

Got it working again, thanks all!
BTW, my friend suggested afterwards using Samsung smart Switch.

Yep that would resolve the Samsung problem.
