Title: what a surprise from Microsoft - subscriptions
Post by: sulky_uk on August 01, 2018, 03:37:03 PM
Its the only online rag i can get in work, anyhow the Daily Fail reporting the MS is going to charge users for updates, poss turning into subscription service, looks like business at first, but possibly to normal users, wont affect us, but still most of us said something like this would happen a couple of years ago

It might work. Alternatively large corporate businesses might stick like glue to W10 and refuse to update, rather than let Microsoft dictate the update schedule to their critical infrastructure. Much like they did with W7 when the bag of dog excrement that was W8 arrived. Then said companies start having meetings with the Sales Teams from Red Hat and Google GSuite. Then Microsoft have a panic attack, realise the idea was dumb, their PR department spin some nonsensical rubbish and the whole thing dies.

I've never worked for a big company that has gotten past Windows 7 yet, was still a mountain climb away for 15K users in my last job.

Red Hat  and Google still charge a decent amount for their products remember and an interesting fact. My last company moved from M$ products to GSuite..... and use of M$ office and other server products rose in real terms because the business grew, the people still needed to be productive, with products they know and trust (yes we gamers are sceptics but generally that's not the case). The majority of business users are still so bad at maintaining a computer to a basic level that anything but M$ becomes a larger support cost than the savings they made by initially going to Linux or Mac, plus Red Hat aren't exactly cheap either and many of the open source products still need some decent knowledge to support, either to pay a company or hire people. It's not such a simple choice.
