Title: PC Buying Advice: Round 2 Electric Boogaloo
Post by: kumogoro on March 27, 2019, 03:35:45 PM
Hi guys!

So Frenzy recently replaced his machine because his old one kicked the proverbial bucket. Now that we've had a few pay cheques since then I would very much like to replace my 8+ year old box!! Especially as the top fan on the case has started making a delightful metallic screech as it continues to die....

The new box will be used for 99.99% gaming (I might code in unreal if i can face doing it in my free time). I've got a budget of around £2.5K and i'm looking to replace literally everything except the power supply. PSU is a TX850 for reference, happy to replace that also if it's not actually beefy enough for the new box.

As a side note I'd like for the box to be 4K capable, and will shell out for a 4K monitor after a few more pay cheques.

Sorry for pestering you guys for advice, much like Frenzy i'm not savvy on what's good component wise and am super super grateful for any advice!

Hey kumogoro I am sure that one of our members will be here soon with some help.  But in regards to purchasing, I would use part picker.

These builds don't include - PSU, case, operating system, as I am assuming you have these already.

Build 1 - £1625 - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/2h4NCb

9700K, 16GB of RAM and a 2080. 1 TB of SSD storage.

Probably the most 'sensible' option. Will handle pretty much anything at 1440p 144Hz, and most things at 4K 60Hz.

You could swap the 2080 out for a 2080Ti if you wanted some more graphics grunt, but IMO the 2080Ti cards are overpriced.

Build 2 - £1792 - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/VNfmsZ

Marginally stronger CPU and motherboard. RAM and storage remain the same. Again, swap the 2080 for a Ti if you want the absolute best in current graphics.

Build 3 - £2040 - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/MwGjFt

RAM increased to 32GB. You don't need 32GB for gaming yet, but over the next few years it may become nice to have some breathing room. Added a 500GB NVMe drive for the OS. Although 'quicker' than 'normal' SSDs, you likely won't actually notice any real world difference between the two. Can't hurt, though, and the price for a 500GB OS drive is not too bad, IMO.

Kept the 2080 as it is (IMO) the best buy GPU at the moment, if budget allows.

Build 4 - £2384 - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/CtVBV6

This option is the 'balls to the wall' version so I have put the 2080Ti in there. This is one of the cheapest Ti cards on PCPartPicker.

Personally, I would go for 'Build 3' as I think it provides fantastic performance with as much 'future-proofing' as you can get. The 2080Ti is a better card than the 2080, but I don't think it is worth the added cost.

All the nVidia RTX graphics cards have just been price cut so much better value deals are available on them now.

Quote from: KitguruOverclockers UK has begun rolling out new prices for the RTX series. The RTX 2060 now starts at £299.99, the RTX 2070 starts at £419.99, the RTX 2080 starts at £599.99 and the RTX 2080Ti starts at £979.99. Those who get an RTX 2060 or RTX 2070 will be able to choose between a free copy of Anthem, Metro Exodus or Battlefield V with their GPU. Meanwhile, those grabbing an RTX 2080 or RTX 2080Ti will get all three games.

On the RTX 2060 front, the ASUS RTX 2060 Phoenix and Palit RTX 2060 Storm X cards are the two dropping to £299.99. Moving up a step, the Zotac RTX 2070 Mini is the cheapest option, bringing the starting price down to £419.99, or you can spend a bit extra and get an EVGA RTX 2070 XC for £449.99.

The MSI RTX 2080 Ventus edition is now £599.99, or you can get the overclocked version for £629.99. Finally, the Palit RTX 2080Ti Dual has officially ducked under the £1,000 mark, sitting at £979.99.

@Chaos Thank you so much! I wasn't expecting such a wealth of options :O I will look over these carefully and consider what would best fit the budget while also buying a case (current one is dying).

Also thanks sneaky for the monitor recommendation, will stash that on a wishlist for later.

Thank you all again, I may pop back later if i have some stupid questions haha :)

ok so it's already stupid question time.

1) I added my PSU to build 4 and saw that it wasn't compatible. So i've slapped a new one in there. No idea if it's any good :/

2) I'm in the market for a new case also. I've added one in which i think looks decent?? However I don't know how to tell if it's going to be able to fit the monster sized GPU and motherboard (Nik had some spacing issues with the raised section of the board)

Your PSU should be fine for that build, I wouldn't buy a new one (and certainly not a lower power unit than what you already have).

As for a case, it is up to you. I would not get that 750 as it has an acrylic window, and glass is all the rage these days. There are many cases that can fit a 240mm radiator cooler and that GPU (which is under 300mm in length).

I'll make some suggestions a bit later.

Here are a few cases that would work -

While we're at it, may I suggest a 144Hz monitor, rather than a 4K one?

Resolution is nice, but it is definitely an area of diminishing returns once you start to get above 2K - especially with normal PC monitor viewing distances. 4K is nice, but for gaming going above 100Hz is absolutely more important than pushing more pixels. The move from 60Hz to 100+ is staggering. You'll wonder how you were gaming at all with a 60Hz panel. Even for desktop use, the difference is noticeable. I've said it before and I'll say it again... no one should be PC gaming at 60Hz in 2019! :roflmao:

Check out some of the 144Hz 2560x1440 panels, or even the 100Hz ultrawides.

also thank you for the case recommendations! I think i'm going to settle on the Lian-Li - PC-O11 because it seems like it has more space behind the board for cable management, and it looks gorgeous! I wasn't sure why glass would be all the rage, but i got totally suckered in at first glance after seeing it.

Went for the full tower version because it was like half the price of the mid tower for some reason , and with the PSU removed this comes in almost bang on budget :D https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/gPV2yX (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/gPV2yX)

Now to go and educate myself on 144Hz monitors haha.

When I was researching a case I ended up with this ...

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/fractal-design-define-r6-tempered-glass-gunmetal-mid-tower-computer-chassis-e-atx-atx-matx-mitx-3x-1

It's super quiet and gets excellent reviews. I am very pleased with it.

May as well put a triple radiator in there if you're going with the O-11, plenty of room.
