Title: Oxenfree - NFTR Review #1
Post by: Benny on May 18, 2020, 03:14:01 PM
If you happen to have Xbox Gamepass, this is free at the moment, if you don't it's about £6.  (https://isthereanydeal.com/search/?q=oxenfree#/page:game/info?plain=oxenfree)

I can't underline how engrossing this is. I don't normally go in for point 'n' click, Monkey Island never did it for me, but I feel like I'm doing this a disservice by not pushing it upon you and this really is a different level.

I'll keep this short'ish, but a group of teenagers on a rite of passage beach party get themselves wrapped up in some creepy ****.

It's a conversation driven story which takes you through some fairly emotional and chilling scenes, family issues, deaths, relationships and general human values that really bring the characters to life. For a bitter old tart like me it's refreshing to find I've got an emotional attachment to the main players, moreso that the prime character is....wait for it....a girl. It's tough to say without giving too much away but it really does draw you along and I actually cared . You get the options on how to respond but these are timed out, so you never quite know when to interrupt and when to keep quiet and let the other characters play the scene out. It feels very much like you are at a teenagers party, never knowing whether to interject or just listen while someone accidentally confesses.

Played out across an abandoned island, there's never far to go to get to the next plot line and it's done at exactly the right pace. The few occasions where I had to replay a section (because I didn't exit on a save point) I didn't feel the need to hurry it, but played out different choices to see how it affected thee mood, which it did. There are multiple endings, multiple hidden objects and a great underlying story.

The only real thing you carry is a radio which is key to the whole plot, again, no spoilers, but the way it's realised in game is brilliant. From the first guided use in the caves on the beach, all the way through picking up creepy clues like a Scooby Doo flick filmed for the new generation, and there's no pesky kids and no main protagonist to speak of....well, maybe.

Go buy it, thank me later....about 4/5 hours later once you've played through once. Let me know what you thought.

Maybe I'll dust off Le Chuck after all.
