Would this be suitable to share the internet between my own gaming pc with my work desktop pc using the single existing Ethernet cable?  Currently have to have the Ethernet connected to the work pc, and using WiFi on mine,

Yeah that would work your will need a cable from router to the switch and then a cable for each machine you wanted to connect it to.
