My son, has (finally) accepted that whilst the Xbox is nice, he wants a gaming rig. Now, a couple of things...
1. I'm not that interested in building one.
2. I'm tighter than a Liverpool Lockdown
3. I have an old 1050ti lying about (I sneakily upgraded for FS).
4. I don't know how much he'll actually use it..although he says he'll do his school work on it...(which means I get another half arsed laptop to go in a drawer somewhere, so any thoughts on reutilising a chrome book are also gratefully recieved).
So do I buy a cheap rig from somewhere and swap the card? What can I get for about 400 quid (tops), stuff like fortnite, cod etc is probably where it's at.
Can I share my steam account with him without impact? And I'm guessing big storage as that's where it's at nowadays....
Any help/advice very much appreciated. I've read Toms Hardware but I'm so out of touch.
Do what i did and treat yourself to a new one and give him the hand me down :)
You can share the steam account, but it's a bit of a pain and not all games are shareable. so he has his own now.
Mate, you can only imagine what he'd find on mine! (and I just did the graphics card so it's running nicely!)
So I did a quick thingy on pc part picker Benny,
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/CjYqp2
I have 8gb of unbranded DDR4 Ram collecting dust you can have for postage costs if you want it if you need to strictly stick to your 400£ budget as my link I think is 440£.
I suspect Choas would be a good chap to have a chain wag with about this also.

Thankyou! I'll have a poke through it tomorrow morning. I may have some ram lying around too.
Really appreciated, thank you!

I don't think my knowledge of PCs extends to the sub £400 part of the market I'm afraid... :woot2:
I honestly have no idea what is good for that price. Nor do I know how various CPUs perform against competitors at that level. I really am only interested and thus up-to-date with the 'enthusiast' end of the tech, sorry.
Did anyone mention the Ryzen 5000s? Giggity. That said, personally if I needed a cheap PC for some reason.. I'd probably hit fleabay and look for something with an Intel 7xxx or 8xxx CPU, i5 or i7, and a 1060 / 1070. Would also consider Ryzen 3xxx series. Not sure if any of this can be had for <£400, but might be worth a look.
Personally I wouldn't bother with older CPUs, and I wouldn't touch any of these i3 or low power SKUs with a barge pole.

I think the bear minimum you'd want would be an i5, although i'm not sure how it would handle warzone as it's quite a demanding game.
thanks guys, I'll keep hunting!

cheers all.....managed to get an amd set up that I think will do the trick. Guess we'll find out! On the plus side, I'll have to donate my monitor, which means I'm watching Smite's thread on monitors now :)
What spec have you gone with James?
I'm still wandering around trying to work out what's what regarding monitors.
The Asus ROG Strix XG43VQ has caught my eye but not sure it's too big or if VA will be ok compared to IPS or future proof.
https://www.box.co.uk/ASUS-ROG-Strix-XG43VQ-43.4-4K-UHD-HDR40_2869172.html
Will be great for Driving but not sure about CS, WOW etc...
hdmi 2.1 monitors are coming soon and i guess the display port 2.0 as well, thinking of upgrading my 4k 32" monitor so i can get the most out of my new xbox.

For his needs he's getting a modified Impulse from here - https://www.palicomp.co.uk/award-winning-pcs
I'm not sure he'll stick with it, explaining how it all works and adjusting res, detail etc might be fun....he's a full console generation, so the concept of different settings might be a patience tester! I'll donate my monitor and get myself something shiny :)
Thought he would have had a go with your gaming PC in the past, or was he banned from touching :boxing:.
You would have been better donating your whole system and upgraded your own :norty:
