I've had a lot of fun playing World of Warcraft, SWTOR, Diablo 3 and Elite Dangerous with a lot of people here.
I've also really enjoyed the two LAN parties I managed to attend and made even more friends.
All in all it's been a wonderful time and I was looking forward to renewing this friendship when Star Citizen launches but sadly this won't be the case as I have a terminal cancer and the outlook for a long life is not that great - on average one year.
To save a all of text here about the journey I've been on I made two blog posts:
https://roy.marples.name/blog/posts/cancer/
https://roy.marples.name/blog/posts/cancer_grows/
Not many people get the chance to say goodbye like this I guess, but here it is.
Hi Roy,
I read your blog, it's brave to share such detail of your journey. We played Elite a lot in the beginning, which was some of my most memorable and enjoyable gaming in years.
I will say goodbye back with the caveat of storing that for the future if needed.
Sometimes good things happen eventually and I can only hope that you will get more time than you are getting told is normal, a lot more.
Of course if you find you want a chat or some bad banter from old guys, the PvE Discord channel never disaapoints, at least for the old part.
Best to you and your family.
Cheers,
Greig (Albert)
Cancer is ****. A true *******.
I'll echo with Greig has said, in that I hope you get far more time than that average.
I wish you all the best for that time - I hope you are able to spend it with the people that matter the most to you in a way that celebrates the positives of life, putting 2 fingers up to that aforementioned *******.
Will keep you and yours in our thoughts Roy,
Ben & Jasmine.
Hi Roy,
That's a really tough read mate. If you ever need a chat or shoot some people, let me know.
I hope you're able to enjoy spending time with loved ones for the foreseeable mate.
Roy, I really am saddened to hear what you are your family have, and are currently going through. It's not been a great year for all of the world with struggles that covid19 has brought upon us, but for you to then get this awful news it isn't fair, not for you and not for anyone to go through it.
I really appreciate you linking those blog posts, and as been iterated already, the community is here and if you need to talk or just vent at anything - never hesitate please to give me a shout at anytime, I give terrible advice as others will vouch but I'm a good listener.
But I hope you continue to fight as I know you have done, and to make many, many happy memories with your family in the months and hopefully years to come.

I haven’t had the pleasure to game with you so much, but still I think this is heartbreaking to read. I wish you and your family all the best, and like people say, I hope you get to spend the best time with your loved ones.
My warm thoughts to you â¤ï¸
As Jewelz said, that was tough to read but nothing compared to what you and your family must be going through. Fingers crossed that the pills work and that you are an outlier with a long future ahead of you as it would be great to crew up a ship and explore the universe with you in SC.
Really sorry to hear mate, cancer is the sh1t, shout if you want to group up in any games, i'm always jumping into Myopic & Pesty's Valhiem game with my longship in my inventory for rescue missions.
Mate, this is heart breaking, thanks for sharing your blog, and I echo all the others here if you fancy a chat or game. Thinking of you and the family all the best.
I'm so sorry to find out what you and your family have been dealing with, no doubt it must be incredibly tough on all of you. As others have mentioned the community will always be here for you and we'll all be hoping for the best with regards to your treatment.
Hi Twyst,
That really was a tough read, so I can't even imagine what it's like to write something like that. You're a tough cookie and I truly wish you the best with your journey.
If you ever want to jump into a game with me, just give me a tickle!
Oh Twyst, horrendous news, my heart breaks for what you and your family are going through. As others have said, I hope you smash that average and can make the best of the time you have with your loved ones. Keep on, keeping on.
James
I'd like to echo what people have said already. Thanks for sharing what is clearly tough time.
Much love!
that's a really sad to hear, many happy memoirs playing diablo with you and chatting at lan's, if u need to chat at all, you can any time.
fight on mate and many happy memories with your family, at the tough time, we are all here for u.
Just read the posts... Not sure what to say that the others have said earlier but so sorry to hear mate.
Shows your strength in sharing those posts and if you want to have a chat about anything let me know!
sorry to hear that mate, cant really add to what others have said..... thank you for letting us know. Fight the fight!
I have no idea what to say apart from that I am sad to hear this news. :crying:
It was a pleasure to have known you.
Can only mirror what the others have said.
Pop them pills and prove 'em wrong, go find that lady and get her secret.
My heart breaks reading them posts. You seem like you posses such a strong character and I think that will only help you going forward.
Praying the medication helps extend the median and we see you at LAN in the future. Best wishes pal. Mike & Family.
Hey Twyst, I've not gamed with you very much but thank you for sharing your blog posts,
QuoteNot many people get the chance to say goodbye like this I guess, but here it is.
I am truly proud to be in a community with members who have guts like this.
Fk Cancer dude.
All I can really do is echo what others have posted so eloquently above. So sorry to hear that and your blog is a tough read. Thinking of you and the family Roy and let's hope those pills come good!
That is really sad news, cancer takes too many lives far too soon! I hope you and your family are able to enjoy the time you have left and that it's a lot longer than expected.
Hi Roy
This little gaming community of ours is a family of sorts to me and, although we never got to actually game much together, I do feel that someone close to me is hurting. So I echo the heartfelt good wishes that others have expressed and I sincerely hope that your body's defences can pull off a ridiculous headshot to take down this ******* disease.
Even knowing the way this was going, that second blog post was a tough read after the optimism in the first.
I'm normally good with words, but at moments like this the right ones evade me. All I can do is echo the sentiments of the others that have written here before me, and hope that you are on the winning end of the odds and get as much comfortable time with your family as possible.
Should it not go your way, may the gods be waiting with cold drinks and hot food when you arrrive.
Hey Twyst/Roy
I'm really sorry to hear this and I can't begin to imagine what your going through my thoughts go out to you and your family, I know too many people who have been affected by cancer myself included lost my grandmother a month ago to lung cancer. I managed to make a positive out of a negative as such and raised some money myself for Macmillian by shaving my legs, now I don't recommend any man does this as it's rather strange and made my legs very sensitive for about a week.
Stay strong Roy.
There is very little I can say that has not already been said except to emphasise it in abundance.
Wishing, thinking and preying for you and your family through these terrible times. Hopefully the pills will have an effect and we get to see you at another lan for some laughs and joy. Raising my glass to you sir....
The blog is a good example to all to check their own body and also get your better halves to do the same to try and find these things. Seriously don't be worried about being prodded and examined as it is so important.
Very sorry to hear and hope you try and continue the fight, I hope you get to spend the best time with your loved ones for now.
Thanks for all of these kinds words, they really mean something to me and have brought a smile to my face :)

Another update for you all.
https://roy.marples.name/blog/posts/radiotherapy/
I'll try and get back into New World again with you all soon, but for some reason I'm struggling to find the motivation to hit 60 in that game and I don't know why.
Hang in there mate. It's hard to imagine how things must be and anything I start to write seems inadequate.
So on a bit of a lighter note.... the new beard look is impressive, balance up on both sides and instant awesome. Worked for Wolverine. And Lemmy.
Wolverine was my first thought too :D !
Good to read a progress update.
You're on a tough road, and I can't really imagine what it must feel like day in and day out.
I hope the time you spend with us morons is enjoyable, even if New World has gotten a bit stale - I stopped somewhere in the 40s.
Hope you and your family manage to enjoy the holiday period!
Man this is heart breaking and inspiring in one hit. I don't play much nowadays but I keep coming back to this little community of good people to check in. Anything I say will sound weak so I'll just say I'm sending love. Keep fighting pal.
What a gentleman! Nuff said.
What they all said, sending love your way. Hope you and the fam can enjoy the holidays.
Keep on keeping on!
James
Yes, thoughts are with you. Keep fighting chief.
All the best mate as Pen said keep fighting chief
Stick in there Roy, I'm very happy we played together recently, it was a pleasant surprise. Looking to the next gaming opportunity.
+1 to everything above. Never give up.
PM sent to you Roy.
Keep it up, you haven't lost until you've given up the fight.
We're cheering for you!
