Humorous gaffs aside, I thought he did an amazing job in maintaining a 73 year marriage and being an absolute rock as consort for Queen Elizabeth II.
He's the type of person I think almost anyone would have enjoyed a beer with and he will be missed hugely I am sure by the Queen. He was blunt, to the point and had a wicked sense of humour along with a strong sense of duty. RIP.
Sad sad day, seen him once in my time in the RAF, when i was in a parade in the late 90's, at that event he was smiling and talking to the lads as if he was one of them (obviously he could relate due to his war service).
He definitely seemed to come across as one of the most "human" of the senior Royals. My favourite story was when he was skippering a yacht off Cowes. He got into an argument with another skipper who wanted him to give way.
In exasperation and with reference to his Greek heritage, the other skipper yelled out "Oi, Stelios, give way!"
Not impressed, Philip yelled back "My wife owns this ****ing bit of ocean, you give way!"
There was a history chap in Twitter who actually properly researched his war record rather than the potted highlights usually trotted out, and he got into a lot more scrapes that he is given credit for:

He seemd down to earth and straight talking chap. He was actually born on the same day as my wife's gran. She died a few years ago after a bit of nasty lack of care in a hospital in Manchester.
Nice he got a lot of supportive medical treatment (well a major heart operation) so he could go home to say goodbye and die surrouned by those who loved him.
