Title: Racing community event
Post by: uni on February 26, 2023, 10:59:33 AM
Hello all!

I have a racing wheel that I rarely use so am looking for an excuse to break it out more often so am going to put forward a suggestion for a little community competition/event(s). This is not restricted to just those with wheels, it's just I happen to have one and want to use it more. All the details are not finalised and I only have a rough idea of the type of thing to do but I welcome input!

I am thinking something along the lines of:
* A month long event where each week we have 1 track that everyone tries to set their fastest lap on
* At the end of the week, let's say Sunday evening, people post their best time to the forum and we see who has won that weeks track

There is no need for people to all be online at the same time to do this, people can do it in their own time. Hopefully it makes it easier and open to more people as we don't need to agree to a set schedule.

The game(s) and the tracks are up for discussion. I have quite a few racing games already so I don't mind what it is.
We could even say we try a different game each week, something like Asseto Corsa Competizione one week, Dirt 2 the following so we mix up the driving styles entirely.

You might struggle with multiple games, if some just don't own some of the titles. Of course, they could still set times at the other games, but it makes it harder to pick a singular winner at the end of it all.

I'd join and play with my wheel (despite being useless with it!).

I might suggest Wreckfest too, as it actually works quite nicely with a wheel (for a more arcadey game - easier for the likes of me).

Sounds good!

The multiple game thing was just an idea I had whilst making the post. Figured if someone was really good at track racing then they'd likely win it all the time. By having different games/genres, it might open it up to more people. But as you say, it really depends on what games people have and if there is an appetite for it.

I'd definitely be up for this. However, as Ben said, you may struggle to get the numbers.

Hello!

I hadn't forgotten about this. I was ill for a little bit so it wasn't top of my priorities but still interested in doing it.

What would be people's preference then, just the one game, different track each week for 4 weeks? If so, what game would people want it to be?

I put together a Google sheet with some of the games I own, if there are others, add them to the top line and if I don't have it but it's the chosen game, I don't mind grabbing (Steam sale is currently on!)

Sheet can be found here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lA9mkpX1FIEG6rIm9lVIn4cEkHJ7UfZvM4wm_LPNTlI/edit?usp=sharing)

As stated before, this isn't just for those with a steering wheel, it's open to all, more the merrier.

So far I think those interested are:
* uni
* Chaos
* pesteh
* Smilodon
* Orvis

would it be possible to get a sever going so people can run on the same track if online at the same time and log times? or would that be too complex.

Forgot to add I have AC and ACC, but dont mind getting another game if it is not to expenseive.

f1 2022 is currently £7.99 till the 23rd. though looking at it the reviews are poor.

We've done this with AC and ACC in the past. Shouldn't be too difficult.

So as stated this will be 4 weeks, 4 different tracks, 4 different cars. When it comes down to the tracks and cars, I have no preference, I will let others decide. I think for the game, we should go with AC or ACC, I don't mind which but I think AC would have the wider range of cars?

Having a server up and running is a good idea, I hadn't considered this before, I will reach out to the admins to see about getting it set up.

Lets look to get this started week beginning 3rd April. That's just shy of 2 weeks to finalise everything and to be completed before the lan.

I am going to make the executive decision of going with Assetto Corsa and not Assetto Corsa Compteitionzone

The reasoning for this is the variety of cars available in AC as opposed to ACC. ACC it's all supped up track cars and doing the same type of car each week might be a little boring and less competitive. Instead, if we go with AC, we can raise a variety of stuff from Go Karts to Ferrari's.

For those that do not have AC already, it's in the Steam sale for £3.09 or the ultimate edition that has a bunch of DLC cars for £6.06, it can found here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/244210/Assetto_Corsa/

If you already own AC and are unsure if you own AC standard or Ultimate, if you check the bundle info https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/6998/Assetto_Corsa_Ultimate_Edition/ here it will say "In library" if you already own it.

As rabble has pointed out on IRC, https://acstuff.ru/app/ is useful for some additional features so i'd recommed grabbing that as well.

@uni - how are we looking? When can we get started :D
Title: Racing community event
Post by: uni on March 27, 2023, 07:53:38 PM
We are looking to start on the 3rd April and the schedule will be this:

* Week 1 - 03/04/2023 - 09/04/2023
* Week 2 - 10/04/2023 - 16/04/2023
* Week 3 - 17/04/2023 - 23/04/2023
* Week 4 - 24/04/2023 - 30/04/2023

Cars and tracks for 3 of the 4 weeks picked, waiting on the last person I asked to pick to provide me with their choice.

The first track and car will be a standard car and track. We have some custom cars and tracks picked for other weeks. I will contact Whitey to discuss getting them added to the server.

I will provide more details on the FIRST car and track Sunday as I am away tomorrow until late Saturday night.

For the custom cars, if people could download and install: https://acstuff.ru/app/ it makes it much easier. I will provide full instructions and links for install the custom cars and tracks closer to the time.

haha thanks for updating. I was doing it in a rush before heading away for a few days, that'll teach me.

Please see (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lA9mkpX1FIEG6rIm9lVIn4cEkHJ7UfZvM4wm_LPNTlI/edit#gid=1430762934)this Google sheet for information on the cars, tracks, links where necessary, instructions for installing custom content.

The server should record everyones times and we should be able to see them at the end of the week. But, as a precaution, if you are playing on the server and you finish a session for the day, grab a screenshot of your best time and save it. At the end of the week (or whenever you are done for the week) please post the image into the spreadsheet with your name clearly visible into the corresponding weeks sheet.

It is up to you to enter your best time!

The screenshot is just for proof as I don't want to have to go through everyones images on a Sunday evening and enter it myself.

All times to be entered by 6pm on the Sunday please to allow enough time.

The server will swap to the new car and track on the Monday after.

If I have missed you out of the list of participants, please add yourself to the overview and each week you are taking part in.

I can't edit last post but one last thing.

Rabble has set up some very handy feature that enables a live view of the server: http://ogp.deadmengaming.co.uk:10100/ac/event/1/live

It will show current car, track, best time and by who, cheers rabs!

Good morning all!

A new week means a new track and car and this week, courtesy of MikeP we have:
Track: Brands Hatch
Car: Praga R1

So you have from today, the 10th April until the 16th April to get some times recorded for the week. Go go go!

Last weeks results
I have updated the spreadsheet with details on the scoring system but will share it here for now.

There is 1 point to be earned for each position you finish up the leaderboard based on the number of participants. As an example, week 1 had 11 different participants so that would be 11 points for first.
In addition to the fastest lap, there are additional points to be earned for each of the 3 sectors. This will follow the same scoring system. That means at the end of week 1 there are:
11 points to be earned for fastest overall lap
Plus, 33 additional points for sectors 1, 2 and 3

The maximum score for week one would be 44

So getting to last weeks result. Congrats to Rabble who got maximum points last week scoring all 44.

Pos   Name                   Points
1   Rabble           44
2   Michael Orvis   40
3   Simagule           34
4   uni                   32
5   MikeP           28
6   -=.dMw.=-Sulky   23
7   Myopic Sniper   23
8   Tunarin           13
9   Milli                   12
10   Chaos           11
11   -=.dMw.=-A Twig   4

Additional info on sectors can be found in the spreadsheet under each week going forwards and also here (http://ogp.deadmengaming.co.uk:10100/ac/event/2/result) on SimView. Be sure to select "Qualifying" on the left handside dropdown menu for the table.

On a side note, rabble also did 438 laps on Laguna Seca, with 335 of those being valid. Vastly more than anyone else :D

Great job to all!

Rabble earned the victory, although from Chasospheres' screenshot, I should have an extra point for the fastest first sector?

I'm limited on time again this week but I'll be on to post a time this evening, and again possibly Sunday afternoon.

Good luck!

Apologies I should have attached screenshots and made it a bit clearer.

As pesteh mentions, the fastest sectors are not from the fastest lap segment. There's a separate section (see pesteh's screenshot) that contains the fastest sectors, I am using this. The reasoning is that I am hoping that it helps close the gap a little bit and makes the overall standings closer and more competitive.

We are quite active in the racing section on Discord if you want to hang out there or have any questions, someone will respond. If you want to just put some laps in on your own, no don't feel pressured in to joining the voice chat either. Most are friendly, apart from that rabble, I'd suggest not engaging in conversation with that one.

Good evening all,

We are now in to week 3 so yet another new track and car combo. This week you can all thank Chaos as his picks were:

Car: BMW M3 E92
Track: Barcelona

So from today the 17th April 2023 until 23rd April 2023 go and get some times recorded.

Week 2 Results
As per last week I have updated the spreadsheet with the results from week 2 and will copy here for ease.

Congrats to Rabble for winning week 2, yet again getting maximum points for the best lap time and also the best S1, S2 and S3 times. We had a new contender this week which means the maximum points was 12 for the week. That means Rabble scored 48 in total! Someone needs to remind him to go back to work at some point.

Good evening all,
Apologies bit later than usual but here are the results from the final week of the event.

Week 4 winner
This was a close run week this week, just 2 points in it but the award goes to dMr Smite, who I believe put in their best lap at the end of the week. Congrats to dMr Smite!

Overall it was a rather competitive week with racers having their best week yet!

Hopefully everyone enjoyed this and it was a good reason for me to get my wheel back out which is what I had hoped. So thanks to all that took part!

Going forward

There have been people wanting this to carry on in some form and as not everyone got to pick a track and car combo last time around, I suggest it carries on in the same format and people submit their requests.

Thanksfully the admin page for handling the server is really easy to do and everything can be scheduled in ahead of time so that it changes automatically reducing the manual task of managing it.

So going forwards, if people want to select a car and track please put your recommendations in the spreadsheet  (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lA9mkpX1FIEG6rIm9lVIn4cEkHJ7UfZvM4wm_LPNTlI/edit#gid=1014628881)and an admin will setup the race and schedule it in on a first come first serve basis. It can run for 1 week before switching to the next one. Custom cars and tracks are allowed and can be found at Race Department here (https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/categories/assetto-corsa.1/). If you decide to go for a custom car and track please include a link to them from a file sharing service alongside Race Department. Race Department has incredibly slow download times, we are talking 150kb/s and 50+ mins to download  400mb track.
