Is there a little hack that can make C-D start automatically when cs starts? In days of yore we had programmes that did it (forget what it was called. <_< Smilodon, step right up please. :D )

QuoteOriginally posted by OldBloke@Mar 3 2004, 10:19 PMThere's a Steam update? When? Oh no, your talking about the one that's still trying to get on my computer.
Cheating Death removed and VAC re-instated due to CD problems with latest Steam update.
QuoteOriginally posted by OldBloke@Mar 7 2004, 04:05 PMWorks fine for me???
CD will be back. A new client has already been released but is too flaky at the moment to recommend users download and install it.

What is wrong here:
I start up CD and then i start up steam then i connect to the server and it says that i'm not running CD so i checked for an update but there isn't any. So i restart steam again. And then the server says it again  How and why if someone knows the answer plz tell ;)

As you've probably realised ...
Steam update = Broken Cheating Death <_< I've disabled CD again for now. CD patch is imminent and will be deployed when confirmed as stable.

I'm a little bit confused as to the need for CD on a server thats locked, not used for matches & you know all the ppl who play on it - the only reason I can figure is you think ppl are cheating on there, which, playing in the style that is tcs I see very little point too, as its not about an individuals skills but the ability to work as a team that counts, or am I missing something really simple?
Title: Cheating Death
Post by: Grimnar on March 25, 2004, 05:23:13 PM
well for dMw it is simple.
We still get new people playing on our server who we don't know. So you don't know if they cheat or how good they are etc.
Title: Cheating Death
Post by: Maus on March 26, 2004, 06:25:06 AM
And from experience it's much less annoying to get killed repeatedly by someone who's damn good than someone who's cheating.
I've joked about anti-cheat stuff being unnecessary in TCS, but it's all about peace of mind I guess. Call me a sentimental old fool, but I like to be able to trust the people I play with. :) What are the benefits of using CD again? If it's going to need a bit of faffing about with every Steam update should we not just stick with VAC?
Title: Cheating Death
Post by: TeaLeaf on March 26, 2004, 07:34:24 AM
VAC is to anti-cheat, how shall we say, what a sieve is to the water storage industry. The bottom line is that CD seems to be more effective than VAC at stopping cheats.
Our objective was to make CD mandatory on Baldric, our match server. But it is easier for us from an Admin perspective to apply CD to all three servers (rather than just one) and then tweak the configs to make it mandatory or optional on each server. Installing it on just Baldric and not Homer & MH is more labour intensive, hence when CD is running it is mandatory on Baldric, but only optional on Homer and MeatHook as our objective is to secure Baldric. Version 4.18 now available. Get your existing CD client to check for update and you will get it. I assume it fixes this weeks Steam update

Yup, every single Steam update breaks CD. I reckon Valve are trying to do it deliberately so that only VAC works (which it doesnt)

Got a different message today:- After updating CD and exiting and updating Steam, having deleted "blob" file. Starting the game lets you load the security file and starts to "precache resources" then comes the new message "Connection to VAC Server has been aborted, please read CD manual" ? Reading the "MANUAL" under the heading NOTICE it seems like I have just been saved from a world ban. I always knew I was "Lucky Jim". Please somebody save me from Steam.

Can I suggest that until Valve/Steam/United Admins get this sorted out that we stop running CD?
It seems that we go through the same process every week. I now don't bother with CD because it has become more annoying than the cheats it aims to block (not UAs fault I would say but the overall effect is annoyance)

Post by: OldBloke on April 05, 2004, 10:53:55 AM
Cheating Death is now running again and is mandatory on *all* three servers.
We have had to do this because we need to have CD running on Baldric, our match server, and the way we have our servers configured means that we can't have a mixture of both VAC and CD. We know there are some anti-CD feelings being expressed within this forum but our research shows that many players perceive better bullet registration ('reg') and less lag. Add this to the fact that CD is updated far more regularly than VAC and you can see why we've made this decision. As usual, please feedback your comments here and rest assured that making your playing experience an enjoyable one is uppermost in our thoughts. dMw Admins

latest version of CD? make sure you star tCD before you start steam, about the modles i think other ppl use diffrent modles so i dont think that'll be the prob.

I think that the CD needs to be started before you start CS. I don't think it matters if you start it before steam or not.
Not sure about the skin models. Could it be a server configuration?

yeah CD doesn't accept all skin models some are blocked.
Just like some sounds skins are seen as cheats.

I start it first as a matter of course if i'm playing on the hook, and just turn it off if i don't need it. I'm running the csru final pack and it has no problems with any of the skins/sounds in that.

It's probably worth pointing out that if you connect with ASE (and I think HLSW, and no doubt a few other server browsers) you can have it start and close CD automatically when you join/leave the server. In ASE you do it like this:
1) Go to Tools > Options in the menus 2) Click on the "Games" tab 3) Select Half Life and you'll see a button on the right called "Anti-cheat programs" 4) Click the button, and then browse to the location of the CD program (most likely "C:\Program Files\Cheating-Death\cdeath.exe") 5) Adjust the radio and checkboxes to suit your preferences 6) Voila! Alas it's been so long since I used HLSW I've forgotten how it's done there, but I don't remember it being very hard. I've never had any trouble with launching CD after I start Steam though, and if you do then starting CD this way won't be helpful.

Yesterday's update has yet again rendered CD useless so it's back to VAC for the dMw servers.
The Admins fully appreciate the inconvenience this causes our community. We will look at the VAC vs CD debate again particularly in light of the raft of VAC releases that have been released recently.
