Title: Games - Final List
Post by: TeaLeaf on March 05, 2004, 05:47:08 PM
OK, so which games can we get (or already have).  I still have a full set of CDs from the last LAN, but we need to have a check from everyone on what can be downloaded........

UT2004 and BF Vietnam hasn't been released yet in a cracked version. I will keep my eyes open.

Tell me what you need and I will have a look through my regular channels.

So do we have a list yet?

We're only  five weeks away from the great event.

PS. I found Halo
:)

but no keygens etc.  :(

I think we are moving towards

CS1.6 (CS:CZ will be out too)
BF (hopefully Vietnam)
UT2k4
plus LFS

I think racing games will show up whatever we do, so I'd include an official LFS server for convenience.

Personally I'd like to give CoD a go too, but if it's not there then that's ok.  However CS1.6, BF & UT2k4 should give us plenty to go at for official games.  What do peeps think?

I think these are more than enough.

The problem with the last LAN was trying to fit the rest in.

Agreed then.  We have our list.

Can we all try to find the files we need please?  If we have them then we can open a short term FTP if needed to accommodate the planning we need to do.

I have the latest BF1942 and Desert Combat patches, they are very large.

I have this suggestion. Tell me what you guys (in this forum of course) want of the items I have acquired. I can burn these to you and bring for the LAN. They could also act as the LAN install package after you have done your installs. If you go for DVDs you need to tell me if you want "+" or "-" discs depending on what your DVD-reader can read. I think the install package last LAN worked out fine.

I will create

1 DVD version of UT2004
1 CD version of UT2004 (6 discs)
1 CD version of BF Vietnam (3 discs)
1 DVD version of Far Cry
1 CD version of Halo

that I will have as an install package. I still have the stuff from the last LAN. I will of course bring the image files for the games so we can burn more copies if needed.

Tell me what you think.

That looks about spot on to me matey. Nice one.

Here are a few things we might discuss??

1. We don't have Live for Speed though. Is there anyway we can play the free version at the LAN. Does it still exist? Do we want to bother with a racing game at all? Life would be simple if we simply told anyone that wanted to play LFS or enter a Racing Tournament (assuming we have one like last time?) to download the free version  themselves?

2. How does Far Cry play as a multiplayer? Will everyone have a machine powerful enough to play it?

3. Is there an arguement for putting the final list onto an FTP server like last time. If we do we can at least sort our own PC's out pre LAN. If we bring our PC's along already pre-installed with the games then we can spend our time getting everyone else loaded up.

4. Would it be worth letting Charlie members have access to the ftp server? The more people who arrive pre-loaded the less complicated the Friday afternoon/evening might be.

5. Are we sure we can run CS 1.6 at the LAN or do well make sure everyone has CS1.5 as a back-up. And what is the map rotation going to be?

Just some thoughts

1. I think that is reasonable.

2. Not sure how FC works in multiplayer. Also you need to have a DVD-player or a DVD daemon tool to install it as it is a DVD only game.

3. I would say no. Because it would mean long DL times and even longer upload times. BFV and UT2004 are 9 full CDs alone. Far cry is another 4 GB. It would take me long time to upload it and even longer for you to DL it. Then just realise how much bandwidth it will take for 34 ppl to download it. I think it will go quicker and less painful at the LAN.
An easier solution would be that you guys told me what you were interested in and I maybe mailed the discs through normal mail to you pre-LAN? Will be lots of burning any many discs. Hmmm ... need to buy more discs.

4. See 3. But if we have say 5 games set with all the titles it will go rather quickly if we follow the copies around i.e. every set has an admin that help the setup being as easy and quick as possible.

5. 1.6 will work (knock on wood). If everything fails we still have Halo, BF DC, BFV, and UT2004 (and racing). We will be playing something I promise you.
We should have some CS admins and a LAN rcon PW. Rotation will be no problem I think.

1.  I think Smite & Ron could be tasked with having the LFS free version and patches to enable racing to be played at LAN V.  I see no need to download it before then as it is such a small leech at the LAN.  Whoever wants to play it then can.  Smite - can you sort the necessary files please?

2.  Far Cry?  I thought we were going for CoD?  I'd go for th elatter personally as I suspect the PC spec problem will raise it's head for some peeps with FC.  JAS, did you find that keygen and no-cd crack for CoD?

3.  These are big games, I would prefer to pay Sadako to post some DVD/CDs to us in the UK so that we can get the software via his big phat pipe.  If we pass the CDs around we should be able to sort our own PCs out before the LAN.  Sadako, would you be happy to do this?

4.  The total bandwidth used in the run up to the last LAN was truly horrendous.  And I mean *truly* horrendous.  I do not to take advantage of Crosswired to that extent so I would suggest that we announce the official games in advance (some people will have the games already) and then others can install when they arrive.  It shouldn't take too long if we all bring a set of CDs or DVDs.

5. CS1.6 should work, but we are able to run CS1.5 as well.  Map rotation?  Take your pick from the hundreds of maps we have available.  Shout at me and I'll load the map of your choice.  If anyone has a suggested rotation then I have no probs with that.

DVD format, pick whatever Sadako.  Most peeps have multiformat anyway.

My shout would be to run with this as the official list:

CS1.6 (with CS1.5 as a backup)
BF Vietnam
Call of Duty
UT2k4
LFS

Can you post your comments on this game list as I'd like to post the official list for members by tomorrow night.

Thanks.

TL.

Sorry about bringing FC into this. As it is a DVD only game I will include it in my set bundle of games. It was not realy my intention to steal CoDs thunder. ;)

It is no problem at all. Should I make one set (or multiple) that I send to you TL that you then forward to the rest of the lads. I prefer sending one package over rather than five as postage is expensive in Sweden. I think that the starting cost for one package will be about £8 and then adds on depending on weight. So it is cheaper for me to send five copies to you TL and then you distribute them, then I send 5 separate packages. Shipping costs are low in the UK if I have understood correctly.

Good call. I can bring the CDs to the LAN but I could send a DVD with the images of the 6 CDs. Then you guys could make a set CDs from that as well.  I could do the same for CoD, BFV and the others and cut down a bit on the burn time. :)

Regarding sending you presents I could send you a list and we will see what Santa can pull out.  8)

Are we planning to test the server software for the games like last time? And therefore to fix a version number for each game?

One or two people have bought copies of the games and are already asking me what version to patch to etc.

Any thoughts?

I have the same 1U box available again this time for the server.

I will maintain the latest patch level on all games making sure that the latest patch is available at the LAN.

I will post a topic displaying the current patch level for the games as soon as I've loaded the server.

I will impose a 'data-freeze' from midnight on the Wednesday before the LAN and publish the final version numbers for LAN games on the Thursday.

Is that acceptable?

Sadako's DVDs should arrive real soon, so as soon as they do I'll pass them on so that we can attempt to install, patch and add the no-cd cracks etc.  It would then be a good idea to have a test session where we can attempt to connect to the server you have to see if it all works ok.

I have sent all the games to TL on DVD. I have compiled all the CD images on a number of DVDs.

All the games in the game list is in this package and some extras as well. Only Far Cry is DVD only. I suggest though that UT2004 is installed from DVD to avoid all the swapping of discs.

I will share all the games from my HDDs and I will also bring a CD/DVD pack of the official LAN games.

For those who doesnt have a DVD reader I recommend using daemon tools for mounting images on the hard drive.

Seems like the discs have gone astray and haven't arrived yet. I have made a new set with only 2 DVDs. This is what they contain.

UT2004 (DVD install)
Halo
BFV
CoD

I discussed this with TL last night and we agreed I should send it to Smite. So smite if you want me to send it to you please PM me your adress. If not someone has to step up for this pack. :)

Edit: I can make another pack to any of you other guys as well. It is only 2 DVDs we are talking about. I was thinking that the CD install of UT2004 could wait. PM me you adresses and I will send away.

Can we set-up an FTP rather than send the discs out.

I just worry about the sending of copied discs through the post especially coming from a different country it could potentially cause a lot of trouble and no LAN if it is taken that far. Only needs the package to split by accident and the feds are informed.
A bit paranoid maybe but i personally dont think it is worth the risk.

If we set-up an FTP just for the games commitee then it wont be a huge impact on crosswired but we can all make a contribution to stryker for the extar costs.

Shall i get my coat  <_<

That works fine for the BB peeps here, but not for me on narrowband.  We then have the bandwidth to worry about for Crosswired.  It may be a moot point as Sadako may have already posted things.  At the end of the day we can always just install things at the LAN, but then we are leaving patching and things to chance a wee bit.

There are only 5 of us and yourself without BB.

I would have no problem with DL'ing, making a copy and driving it down to you TL (what is it a 45min Drive).

Sorry just the paranoia kicking in....

Packages have allready been sent to OB and Smilodon (and TL of course) so I say we should wait and see if they arrive. There is no way they can be traced back to me and if the Feds comes knocking on the door - the nial.

Hurrah.

I 'have' BFV, COD and UT'04

Are we going to lock each game at a certain patch number (i.e. the latest) and are there any plans to test them on a server?

Other than that I can probably set these games up on other peoples PC's on the day.

Would it be better to use the discs or file share them from my hard drive???

I will fileshare them on my shuttle but also on my extra HDDs that I will bring. If you fileshare as well it will be distributed very quickly. :)

AFAIAA:  OB is setting up the servers and will advise which patch number the server is set at - we will then have the opp to connect to the server to test it.

So we need to do this in the next week!  Smite - can we meet this weekend?

Sadako's discs have all the extras  ;)  (except there is no halo keygen?)

BFV, COD and UT2004 all load up, cracked and work fine so far. The test will be Oldies server tryout.

I have knocked up a quick BFV guide and posted it on the forum. It's designed to give a quick howto for people who will be loading the game at the LAN.

I can't get COD or UT 2004 to work across the Internet although LAN works fine so I can't say too much about them. Maybe soemone else who has played them could knock something up?

Might be worth scanning the manuals and having them available as an Adobe at the LAN.  I'll do the BFV one now and have it with me at the LAN - at least peeps then know what keys to press!

Call of Duty appears have just updated from 1.3 to 1.4. What version are we running at the LAN? If it's 1.4 I'll bring the patch. I have both the 1.3 and 1.4 patches downloaded although there are comments in the readme about maybe having to enter the cd-key again to get the patches to work. Might be a problem for us !!!

Battlefield Vietnam has no patch yet although one is planned soon, but not in time for the LAN. There a re some additional maps but I guess we have more than enough with the official 20 odd maps that come included?

UT2004 has no patch yet although there is an "Epic Bonus Pack" (128mb) that adds three new game types and  anumber of new maps. Again I assume there's enough in the standard game to keep us happy?

Bring both 1.4 and 1.3 patches and if you can find one, a no-cd patch for 1.4 too.

OB-wan is setting his server up this evening and Frenzy is helping out with the local testing.  His machine will be there by mid-evening on Friday.  My server will also be there so there will still be lots of opportunities to play before dinner on Friday evening :D

I'll bring both. Sadako has provided a no-cd hack and key-gen on the first disk, so we should be OK.
