Title: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Post by: DonkeyCheeseGrater on October 17, 2002, 08:30:41 PM
Any ideas on this problem re cs/hl.
Mine screws up in an intermittant style to lul me into a false sense of security. It may be fine for days, then all of a sudden nothing happens upon pressing fire, then it will start crashing every few mins, then I cant connect to the server because its enforcing model consistency, then all of a sudden its fine and will work ok for rest of the evening and sometimes for days.  Also half the time CS wont even load apart from sometimes when it gets half way then resorts to windows with no sign of cs. If i open task manager hl.exe is on the list but not on prog list, if i press end programme it loads.
The only consistent thing it does is everytime I exit cs/hl and return to winblows Xp, internet explorer will not respond every time i load it, and a large majority of programmes will stop working a short time into using. This doesnt change after a restart. The only way to fix it is by doing a scandisk with fix.
The CS has been reinstalled and the HL (fresh download), as it was happening before, the whole os was reinstalled only a month or so back.

Any good ideas cause the only one on my list involves a 10lb sledge hammer.    :?

Spooky how both you and I are having the same hl.exe probs ????

I've done a complete re-install and things have improved.

Look out for these two things:

1. Check your shortcut to make sure you're not running in compatibility mode.

2. Make sure your config.cfg isn't read only. You can make it read only again after HL/CS has sorted itself out.

Just a dumb question but do either of you use Microsoft Optical Trackballs? Mine wreaked havoc when I upgraded to CS 1.5. It mainly conflicted with the sound but also caused some crashing problems. I only mention it because as well as the sound & crashing I also had the exact same fire button problem. I removed and reinstalled the mouse driver and it sorted all my problems.

Just a thought???

The 10lb sledge hammer idea seems to be the one to go for. Plus £2000 for an another machine.
Does that help?

Hard life, dont over do it, here take a seat, you must be worn out.

Neutron, to answer your question, no. I did have intelli. explorer, but it kept deciding to stop working, so i would change usb port and it would be fine again. Wasnt sure wether it was mouse or usb so used adapter, and put it in ps/2. Was fine for a while then started messing about, so decided that mouse was stuffed, and brought intellimouse optical, which was about three weeks ago and that has started to stop working in usb but if i swap it  over works fine just like the explorer.  :x

Might just throw everything in the nearest bin.

Oh yeah, Oldie i was running compatability mode for 98, so i have set it back, although i think Gandy and i decided to put it in compatability mode to see if it would fix all the problems. Worth trying though.

Ok ive managed to find the on button for my computer today, how on earth do i find out if config is read only. Im only simple, I used to drive a tractor....... brooom brooom.

Sorry DonkeyCheeseGrater, but it was the optical trackball that I was referring to...the one with the big red eyeball that talks to me in my nightmares.......

anyway, I installed the new mouse and got problems similar to yours as soon as CS 1.5 released. Fixing it  consisted of making sure my sound card (Audigy) was bang up to date driver-wise and only installing the basic Microsoft driver for the mouse, with none of the bloaty extras that came on the CD. That fixed it for me.
