Title: Starship Troopers 2
Post by: Gh0st Face Killah on March 25, 2004, 03:52:31 PM
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, the straight-to-video sequel to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 hit SF movie, will debut on a special-edition DVD and VHS on June 1, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment announced. Oscar-winning visual-effects master Phil Tippett makes his directorial debut with the sequel, which will star Kelly Carlson, Ed Lauter, Richard Burgi and Sandrine Holt. Ed Neumeier, who wrote the first Starship Troopers, also wrote the script for Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation.

Troopers 2 picks up the story where the original film left off, back on the front lines of the battle against the arachnid warrior bugs at the desolated outpost of Zulu Angel. A small group of mobile infantry troopers, led by Gen. Shepherd (Lauter), finds itself taking refuge in an abandoned Federation outpost. There, they discover the last remaining soldier, Capt. Dax (Burgi), who helps them fight off the encroaching arachnids.

Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment will also release the original Starship Troopers and Troopers 2 together in a special two-pack DVD set with a suggested price of $36.95.

Bonus features include commentary by Tippett, Neumeier and producer Jon Davison; a visual-effects featurette, From Green Screen to Silver Screen; commentary from visual-effects supervisor Eric Levin; a making-of featurette, Inside the Federation; and interviews with cast and crew

I read the above, then read between the lines and noticed the phrase "this will be utter to$$ and we are desperately milking it for all it's worth, heck we couldn't even get a Z list actor like Casper Van Diem to star in it again"

Think I'll avoid this like the proverbial plague

So I assume you'll be the first at the counter on release day to buy this astounding piece of modern cinema ;)  Sorry, but I got burned for a fiver at the cinema to watch Robocop 2 - I've learnt my lesson about hastily rushed sci-fi sequels :)

I'm sure Orson Welles is quaking in his grave as ST2 looks set to overtake Citizen Kane as arguably the greatest film ever made ;)

I'm sorry but you can hardly call this hastely rushed, when did the first one come out again? I think we can safely assume it'll be rubbish from the fact its a straight to video/dvd release.

I meant it as in "no-one had heard of them making it and suddenly it pops up in your local Blockbuster" a la Dusk Till Dawn 2 or Vampires 2   :P

Ah but no, see no,  but ah see no, cause like, ah no see, cause that's not it at all, see ahh no.......

From it's immediate conception the film was always planned as a straight to video release. There was never a plan to give it a cinema run.

And box office doesn't have to be an indicator of quality. Who rushed out to see Pitch Black at the cinema when it opened? (It ttok under a million at the UK box office)

That being said it could well be dross or it could be a gem. But I'm one of those 'glass is half full' guys, so I'm hopeful.

PS. You don't quake in your grave, you turn. Quaking is done in your boots  ;)

I.e. it's shit ;)

True box office isn't an indicator of quality, but name me one sequel that went straight-to-video that was any good and I'll buy you a frosty beverage at the LAN :)

I stand corrected (see - I can do humble ;) )

Lion King 2 went straight to DVD mainly due to the fact that Disney reconed more parents would buy the DVD for their kids than drag them to the flicks. So they chose to release it on DVD for commercial reasons. As they did with Alladin 2. Antz 2 also is planned as a DVD release rather than a cinema one.

Ponder this.......

The DVD market is worth billions. More and more people are installing home cinema systems. As systems improve and the prices drop people can get near cinema experiences at home. I quite often miss a cinema release on purpose as I'd rather see the film at home. Big Blockbusters are still best on the big screen, but more intimate films are actually better seen at home IMHO.

For example I'm waiting to see 'Monster' and 'The Passon of the Christ' at home rather than see them at the cinema. Likewise I watched Schindlers List at home on purpose as the subject matter , to me, demanded a home viewing.

Already some new or young quality film makers are choosing to make films for the DVD market, mainly due to the cost of getting a film screened. I don't think it will be that long before many more people invest in Home Cinema and therefore prefer to see at least some of their films at home. So the rule that Straight to Video is always rubbish doesn't totally hold true and will become less and less valid as time goes on.

Maybe ST2 is the first of a new breed of film and maybe it's just crap.

Like I say we'll see and I think you'll be buying me a pint soon enough  :)

QuoteIt's not as ridiculously violent as the original, but it's arguably more disgusting. Good job Tippett. Plus there are some boobs, which I know are popular.

QuoteI would say this is a well above average straight to video sequel, but not on the level of a real sequel. So if you can get into that, have at it

So not too shabby at all then  :)  :)

I got my hands on this one. Straight to DVD as said previously. Well what can I say. Shit story. Terrible script. Some nudity. Awful acting. Not one ounce of the sarcasm and humor found in the first movie. Splatter - yes.

Do you have to see it ... nope. You haven't missed a thing.

0 out of 10

All they do now is re release old films which could make some more revenue for the story! A bit like MIB II Which was was also alot crapper that the first one o well some sequels are good but most are crap. Maybe one day some sequels will learn from ones which have already make the vital mistake of not listening to what the consumer actuallly wants :)

Yeah i rented it out the day it came out which was 10th May i almost turned it off after 5 minutes of watching it. Everything was so crap they must have had such a small budget. Though every shop ive been in is selling it on dvd and video im sure they will rake it in, and im sure there will be a lot of them being traded back in for something else. So dont even rent it it aint worth the money cant believe they screwed up something that i thought was quite good in the the first one.

Though the women who gets naked was a 9 1/2

That's a real shame, as I hoped the film would go for the same black humour style of the original. Although I'll probably still rent it out of morbid curiosity

And yes my morbid curiosity did endeed get the better of me. And yes compaired to the original it was a very poor sequel. Had Starship Troopers The Original never existed it might have looked a little better. But as it is, while it was watchable, it was a big disappointment. The director can't direct and the actors can't act. And the studio obvioulsy didn't give a monkeys about either the original story of the fans they were ripping off. Well they have my £3.75 now and I hope they choke on it.
