Title: LAN V Seating...
Post by: smite on April 16, 2004, 07:03:14 PM
(http://www.smitethee.co.uk/stuff/seatingplan.jpg)

As we get more organised for LAN events we have decided to prepare people for where they will be seated. (The plan was also made so that friends or family members can sit together and feel comfortable.)

The tables will be set-up when you arrive with Laminated cards stating your player name and IP address, these cards should be taped to the top of your monitor so that people can:

A.) Know who you are.
B.) Know your IP address.
C.) Find you.

When you arrive you can set-up your PC but please DO NOT power it up. The LAN admins will be arranging what zones power will be provided from.

Sigh.....  I do think your taking the whole 'LAN admin' thing a bit too far.  Lan's so far 4, seating problems ZERO.  We're grown men for christ sake, to start telling people where they can and can't sit is just plain stupidity.

LAN's are for fun, nothing else, start ruling people and that removes the fun.

I think it is a good idea with the seating arrangements. There are more ppl this time and we need to consider the power management etc. I think it will mean things will run more smoothely and everyone knows where to be and how the layout of the LAN will be.  :thumb:

Well I have to agree with JB on this, although in a more restrained manner  :)

The seating plan is a bad idea. I might not actually want to sit next to, or between my two good friends at this LAN. I spend enough time in their company while at work that I might like to just jump in and see what fate has in store. And it's quite possible that they may want to do likewise?

Seating plans have nothing to do with power requirements.  There's going to be a PC at each seat and whose it is has no bearing on power loads. A gradual power on to stop the RCD trips doesn't need a seating plan.

It's a pointless idea that solves a problem that doesn't exist. It's orgainisation for organisations sake.

I'd go further and say that there is a hierarchial feel to the layout that isn't particularly condusive of a friendly LAN.

Just let everyone sit where they like and keep it all cordial and relaxed.

I agree with Smilo. For example, what if you arrive early and you're way at the other end of everyone else? Seems a bit silly IMHO and reeks of hierarchy.

What next? Admin Table/ Charlie Table/ Bravo Table / Loser table?

I swing both ways on this. One side says "Oo, I know where i'm going to sit", The other side says "This is another aspect of 'control' I can well do without". Really, you arrive, bag a seat and get on with it. Power management? Do you mean to say you know the power requirements of everyone's machine? I do understand the intentions are well meant, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Would it be possible for me to have a red chair instead of the blue please?

Now you should know by now that I’m a follower, not a leader. If someone says “long A”, then I’ll go long A, if someone says sit at the end and be quiet, then I’ll do my best to please.

I’m just happy to come along and have fun, if I’ve got somewhere to setup when I get there, then all the better.

Smite, now you know where I’m sitting would it be possible to have a pint of bud waiting on my table when I get there? Thanks.

The table layout is of essence and we do have power problems if we are not structured from the beginning. That is fact from previous lans that we should be aware of and not disregard.

My experience regarding the seating is that people tend to stick together irrespectively of free seating. I don't care if I sit at one end or another but I do know that I will sit next to Albert as we drive up to the LAN together and pack the stuff in & out of the car together. It is convinience and not hierarchy. I sat next to albert at lan 3 and 4. I know it was the same for many of the others.

For all I care sit where you like but the table layout is something I really think we should stick to. Also I think that TLs/OBs position at the end should not be taken by anyone else. They are "in charge" of the LAN and it has worked really well having the admins at the end of the room.

Well..... It seems people are not happy with either Who they are sitting with or someone telling them where to sit.
If you do not like where you are sitting send me a PM and i will try to change it.
If you don't like being controlled....there isn't much i can say about that apart from i am trying to help not control?

There is a lot which has been done and is still in progress ensuring that YOU have a good time and there are no problems and all you have to do is turn up.
Hotel arrangement
Cheap rates
Local accomidation
Servers with games installed
Switches
Ip: config for gaming and other
Games to all patch level
Etc.....

The plan was just to help people get an idea of how to set-up the room, where the servers will need to be, people are with friends, POWER MANAGEMENT, IP assignment and people have an idea where they are going to be before they arrive so making it easier for set-up.

We do take your opinions seriously. Honest ;)

For what it's worth, I've found at previous LANs that the only time you sit down is when you actually play games. Other time is spent socialising and moving round and talking to people, admiring various machine types/mods and watching Benny's pron. I personnally don't mind where I sit but having an initial seating arrangement does seem to make good sense as it saves you hunting round the room asking if seats/tables, power sockets, lan cables et al are in use etc. especially as people will be arriving at various times throughout Friday/Saturday. As has been previously mentioned the main aim is to enjoy yourself and I don't think a little bit of organisation will detract from that. "Bring it on"

my ONLY 2 disaponitments with the seating plan are very minor

1- i have to walk further to the bar from where i sat last time

2- im not next to benny so can have a direct rout to his special server

I've still not fixed the server, so you are limited to the 20ish gig on my desktop, outside gaming time, first come, first server (sheepy is first in the queue ;) )

I agree, seating is really of no concern so I'd rather it be planned, I mean why not?  there is plenty of socialising going on and yes, really your only seated when playing.....

Regarding the seating plan...

I have some pie to eat, some humble pie. Worked great.

An inspired move to put Benny on the end of a row, so that only one person (BFC) had to sit next to him.

Although I did have to sit far too close to Fatbob, to make it entirely successful.

well i was sitting pretty much where i would have chose anyhew

would have liked to try sitting at the top but this was soooo hot whenever i went on a walk up there

even tho i was sitting beside an open door down  the bottom i still had to trail a fan out the back to keep me a bit cooler
