Title: HLGuard?
Post by: DogMeat on May 13, 2002, 02:19:03 PM
Seeing as Cheating-Death is on hold/dead in the water and Valve's anti-cheat system is nowhere to be seen, do we want some form of anti-cheat on MH?  The only one that seems to be working currently with 1.4 is HLGuard (formerly known as CSGuard).  Opinions and those for/against please...

Difficult one this.

Valve are rumoured to be releasing something 'soon'. HLGuard was side-stepped by OGC shortly after it's release so presumably an updated HLGuard is imminent too (swiftly followed by an OGC response no doubt). And false detection of cheats worries me. Check this from the HLGuard forum.

QuoteFalse OGC detection - read here!
I just spoke to |HB|^rIpp4 in IRC and have come up with a way that OGC could be falsely detected.

If a player has an alias in his scripts which match a day of the week (mon, tue, wed, thu, fri, sat or sun) then they will be falsely detected as having ogc v8.

As a test I made the following alias and put it in my autoexec.cfg

alias "sun" "say oh dear oh dear"

When the detection kicked in 'oh dear oh dear' was displayed twice and I was banned for OGC v8.

This is only going to affect a minority of players who script there own configs.

I leave it upto you to decide what you do but this will be addressed in the next release.

I don't know about anyone else but HLGuard (and CSGuard before it) does some weird shit with my mouse. I can't explain it. I just know it feels 'different'.

So all in all ... I dunno. 'Wait for Valve' gets my vote I guess.

csguard or what ever the shite is called today is CRAP

False positives are high, plus me dad was kicked off a server cos a driver on his system had the letters OGC in it.  He exchanged a few mails with the developers and they were just arsy.

Wankers :pimp:

Tell it how it is!

That is really lame, just searching for ogc in a filename. There are tens of thousands of different files on todays PC's and all with mostly unique names. Chances of one of them having ogc in the name is quite high!

On my work machine I have found 6 files with ogc in it, and some of them are from software I use at home, and 4 are microsoft dll's! So definitly DON'T install that crap on your server!!

HLguard = useless

I'd wait for Valve's solution or (hopefully) the next version of C-D, and I'll ask around on ED, see what other clans are using these days.

Here is the reall biatch.

Some times he could play for hours before being kicked because of the driver files.... other times it was near instant.

Now it either detects all be it incorrectly or it dosnt.

Did any of those CS guard guys used to work for Micro$oft?

An update pertinent to this discussion is on CS-Nation ...

Not sure if MH is a 'secure server' tho. Doggers?

According to the settings, we are a secure server.  Which means, if I read that site correctly, that MH has updated itself with the new security module.  Better go check the logs...

I've just signed up for PCS, and was browsing your forums (very nice btw) when I saw this thread.

I'd like to point out that HL Guard is totally ok now. We use it on our server with no problems for anyone who doesn't cheat. Yes there have been some issues, but most of them have been solved now.

Hope you don't mind my two-penneth worth

I'm keeping the anti-cheat options open for now; the type of people who want to play PCS aren't usually the type to use cheats.  For ED and other matches, it's definitely better to be as sure as possible...

For ED games get HLTV to record a demo.

Its the best cheat-catcher I know.

No. I've changed my mind and decided not make the comment that first came to mind.  o|
