Title: the race with Jamena
Post by: Jamoe on May 13, 2004, 01:54:32 PM
lol Suicide Monkey aka Jamena.

I keep giving myself targets of.. im gonna get above so and so. :D

sort of motivating myself.

the work ones arnt on all that much tbh. so we are probably about the same.

ill lose ground over the weekend cause they will both be turned off. And the misses is moaning about me leaving the home PC on all the time (it does keep the office nice and warm though :D).

Anyone got any facts about power consumption of PCs?  like a PC left on for 24 hours is like leaving the TV on for ??hours.  I need some facts to do battle with :D (note i keep the monitor switch off)

hmm another question, how many f@h apps can u run at once?

hehe. My "work" (uni) pc runs 24/7 most of the time, home pc sometimes all day, but not too often anymore. I do tend to turn it off when I go to bed, even though it's quiet now. As summer is approaching I'll probably not want it running in my room all the time! or perhaps it's time to get some air-con going...

If the gfx is in suspend mode your gfx card shouldn't draw much current, and your hdd probably doesn't work too hard for F@H. cpu draws a fair whack of power though, ...given that most pc's run fine off've 300W psu's I think it's safe to say a pc left running is a bit like leaving one or two 100W lightbulbs turned on.

I doubt it's beneficial to run more than the one f@h app on each machine. It hogs all my spare cpu cycles as it is!

hehe

i had read on the f@h forums that u can have 2 applications installed. so u can switch to other when ur queue starts to fill up (i have trouble uplaoding mine, although i managed to get 6 up this morning, then 2 more from work)

just owdered if u could run both at same time.

yea, ill look into power saving settings to see what i can get to turn off.

it wont be so bad when i can borg the work PCs. But im stil not sure about the school PCs, waiting for feedback from the company that admins them, I can get hold of admin passwords but i dont fancy screwing with the machines.

From what I've read on the F@H site I don't think it's worth running multiple instances of the F@H client on the same systems unless it is multi-processor.

Or hyperthreads.

Multi-processor you shoudl run one per CPU.  Pentium IVs with HT should run 2 per CPU.  But don't expect double the output from the HT CPUs, it is nowhere close to that!  AMDs still fold best in terms of WUs/$.

I agree with the lightbulbs, not a lot per month.  I have 4 PCs on 24/7 at home (all in the same room) and they do warm the room up.  However if you leave a window open it is usually fine until you get into those RareSummerDays™.  When you reach those then it is *well worth* getting some aircon installed.  Putting aircon into a single room is relatively inexpensive and quality of your browsing experience is soooo much better :D

oooh, in that case I may have to fire up my old celeron333 system! Just got it back from my mum as she's got a swanky laptop and never actually uses the old desktop

On the other hand I may try putting linux on it and convert it into a router, though my linux "sk1llz" are pretty non-existent, ...hmmm, I feel a hardware thread coming on...
