Title: Manhunt
Post by: smilodon on June 01, 2004, 07:45:56 PM
From the people who brought you Vice City.

Imagine a homicidal character that looks the spitting image of Smite...ok just think of Smite.
You play him - James Earl Cash, convicted murderer sentenced to death. Snatched from the executioner you are smuggled out of the prison. Now you find yourself in a cross between a game and a snuff film. Guided by the mysterious Mr. Starkweather you have to fight and kill your way through the ruined ghetto streets of Carcer City while your every move is filmed for a new breed of sick game show. Similar to the running man but not utter crap. While gamgs of thugs and sickos hut you across the city you have to stalk and slice them up before they catch you and kill you.

So far I've choked a guy to death by forcing a plastic bag over his head, sliced another mans throat open with a shard of glass, smashed a mans head to pulp with a baseball bat and finally ex'd someone by ramming a crowbar through their neck. And all that was on the first level This is possibly even more violent and amoral than Postal 2.

There's really no justification for this kind of extreme violence and if The Daily Mail brigade ever clap eyes on it I think they'd pop a blood vessel. So until decent right minded people have this filth banned get it while you can.

A bit repetative but a pretty reasonable stelthy sneak and kill game 7/10

It's a Rockstar game and it's a console conversion so it definately has that Grand Theft Auto Vice City feel. In fact I'm fairly sure that it's the same engine that runs both games. You even egt the dropped weapons floating a foot above the ground with a halo of light round them. Still it worked for GTA 3  :D

I got my copy second hand from CEX.co.uk, but I'm not sure if it's worth buying as a full priced game. It's very linear and a little repetative, but if you're into 3rd person slash 'em ups it's worth a look. PC Gamer gave it 72%

The film maybe (although Killian is class in it) but the book is one of the best reads I've ever come across.  Sounds like this game is a far more faithful reproduction of the King novel than the Arnie film.

I was tempted but it looked a little cartoonish (although as you point out it works for GTA and VC).  Read somewhere that the stalking bits are great, but the combat is a bit too rudimentary (a la VC punch/kick combo)?

There's actually no reference to the film 'Running Man' in the game. The game revloves around making underground movies of your characters journey through the city. There's no live game show as in Running Man.  I used the reference to the film loosly.

Hand to hand combat is pretty basic but to be honest if you end up going toe to toe with someone it probably means that you've done something wrong. It's much like Thief in that respect. Get close to the enemy and hit the fire button then quickly back off and circle round for another go. Almost all your kills are sneaky. The sweet touch is that when you actually make the kill the camera pans away and you get a movie style shot of the action. The other nice touch is the longer you hold down the fire button before releasing the attack the more complex and grusome the kill. Of course the tradeoff is that the longer you stand behind the enemey powering up the kill, the higher your chances of being spotted and the sneak kill failing.

I liked that book, Richard Bachman job wasn't it? Much darker and much much better than the film.

Back on topic however......I wanna try Manhunt, and prolly will unless someone tells me to get something else? Contracts perhaps?

And with that in mind, I'm going to start another pointless thread elsewhere.

I've done Contracts too. It's very much like the original game and uses the same engine, so there are no graphic improvements as such. The levels are more gruesom and disturbing though and the kill animations have been improved. However they seem to have re-released several of the original levels. You get to play the Triad Resturant level again as well as the one in the Bucharest hotel. You even kill the target by locking him in the sauna and whacking up the temperature just like the original. Seems like a bit of a rip off.

However there are some great new levels. My favorite is sneaking into an English  Mansion where the Toffs hunt real people on horseback with dogs. You sneak in the night before the hunt and get to free their latest 'Runner' and waste the whole household in the process. Choking the life out of Lord Toff with a pillow felt a lot more fun than is enterly healthy.

If you really like the Hitman series then this is a goody. Otherwise give it a miss.

I thought Hitman was just a rehash of the first two games. Felt a bit swizzed actually :(
Manhunt is about as Playstaion as Grand Theft Auto 3 & Vice City. It has a very similar PS2/Xbox feel similar to those two games. So if you  don't mind that slightly clunky feel then Manhunt should  cause no problems.

I almost rented the game... But it looked to twisted to me...

I love the GTA series and cant wait for GTA SA but this one looked a little to... freaky.

Besides, if I were to get it, I would load up the good 'ol Action Replay Max and forget about sneakiness... (I hate games u gotta be sneaky in... In MGS2, all i did was turn on inf health and nmes dont see you.. then i had fun...)

Its kinda funny cuz when GTA VC came out, all those overprotective mothers all started whinning and wanted it banned. I never heard any of this for Manhunt... Maybe when they saw this game, they had a heart attack...  ;)

Maybe sometime ill rent this game... But eh

Smilo, as and when you're finished with it, I don't suppose you would mind popping in the post in return for some suitable reward?
