i also done a search on steam looking 4 modem dropping and it came up with some results like
1)
QuoteDoes Valve read these forumns? I hope so because this is a major problem that should be addressed.
Since the new media has been relesed, i have been having problems with my internet. Every once inawhile my cable box disconnects me from the net. (I have Comcast btw, and although they suck this has never happened before). How do i know this is steams fault? well im on vacation here in California (i live in Michigan) and im using a friends computer, who dosent have steam. To watch any new videos while i was away i downloaded steam onto his computer. Just after i get it, the SAME CONNECTION PROBLEMS OCCUR. He has never had this problem either. Somthing is happening with steam that messes with the ISP.
I want to know if anyone else is having this problem? i uninstalled steam and restarted the computer, and so far im not being dissconnected. Valve, please take a look at this issue as if it happens with HL2 i will be very dissappointed, along with whoever else is having the problem.
plz plz plz help me im going mad with this problem and i dont have the knowhow to fix it ive got bt still looking into it , it seems to happen when its really busy like 5pm til 10pm but then ive known it to go down at 12:30pm b4 :taz: :taz: :taz: :taz:
Isnt your conection the last on your block? Cant you get the cable company to boost your signal or something? When at my last house we have probs with the cable kept switching off etc. We phoned up the cable company complained and complained and after about 6 visits they sorted it. Now someone who knows aobut this stuff say something!
If the problems are usually during the 'peak' time then it sounds like hardwaree and bandwidth contention that is being overworked. I'd chase hard on the cable company to see if they can confirm what sort of contention is operating and whether or not any of their equipment is being overworked.

My cable modem allows me to see what the signal strength is (through various built in webpages). Are you able to check the signal strength you are getting and then we can do some digging to try and find out what you should be getting?
Don't know about ADSL but Cable for BY you expect to get:
Downstream SNR to be greater than 26dB,
Downstream PowerLevel to be 0dBmV (+/- 10dBmV),
Upstream PowerLevel to be no greater than 56dBmV.
As you were busy you may not have seen my reply to this query a while back have look this may solve ur issue

Trawl through HERE (http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=bt) and see if it's a BT problem. If not then I think it must be down to your specific ADSL line :(
ive had yet another enginneer out today they had to do some work underground about 450yds away.
hopefully this has fixed it ,fingers crossed.
all i can do is monitor it for 7 days and see how i get on ,
then ill be back for matches ect.......
