Total converstion mod for ut2k3 and 2k4
Info here (http://www.blackcatgames.com/swarm/)
QuoteTwo years ago Valve picked up the mod team of the popular Alien Swarm mod for UT 2004. Since then, the game has been ported over to the Source engine and with it comes a completely free release of the redone game through Steam!
On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam.
In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If youââ,¬â,,¢ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.
Alien Swarm is a game and Source SDK release from a group of talented designers at Valve who were hired from the Mod community. Available free of charge, the game thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics. With your friends, form a squad of four distinct IAF Marine classes.
Includes 4 player co-op so must be worth a look :thumb:
The old UT mod was terrific fun, I can't wait to play it with some Valve polish applied!
This looks like it could be a giggle :)
I wonder if there is going to be a PvP update, so we can have a bug hunt equivalent to L4D?
I am at work ATM.
Can someone download it and see if we can get our own servers running?
If we can let's move this to game development get a couple of servers up and get a game going tonight if possible!
Thanks,
It's 4 player co-op GhostMjr, I would be incredibly surprised if it supports dedi servers as it really has no need for them.
Is there a way to d'l it before it unlocks? I'm either being really blind or dumb, or there just isn't a way to do it.
Edit, randomly found this -
QuoteSwarm Dedicated Server
From Valve Developer Community
Jump to: navigation, search
Running the Dedicated Server from Steam
* Go to the Tools tab in Steam and double click the "Alien Swarm Dedicated Server"
* A window will pop up with some server settings:
o Type in a Server Name.
o Type in an RCON password of your choosing.
o Click Start Server.
Some useful settings to customize once the server is running:
* Under the "Configure" tab, you can set the Default Campaign. When no players are on the server, it will default to this campaign.
* In the "Console" tab you can enter "sv_steamgroup " where N is the ID of your chosen Steam Group. Players belonging to this group will see your dedicated server from the main menu. You can find your ID number by visiting your Steam Group admin page on Steam Community.
Running the Dedicated Server with the HLDSUpdatetool
NOTE: These steps are for advanced server operators. For more details visit the Source Dedicated Server community site
* Download and install the tool from here: HLDSUpdatetool
* Open a command prompt in the directory where you installed the tool.
* Run hldsupdatetool to ensure you have the lastest version and for a list of commands.
* Create a directory for your server files such as c:\myswarmserver
* Run this command to update the game files (this may take several hours depending on your internet connection):
hldsupdatetool -command update -game alienswarm -dir "c:\myswarmserver"
* Create c:\myswarmserver\swarm\cfg\server.cfg for configuring server settings.
* Open a command prompt in your server directory.
* Run this command to start your server (NOTE: You must start in the lobby map to properly start the Campaign mode):
srcds.exe -console -game swarm +map lobby -maxplayers 4 -autoupdate
So it would seem there will be Dedicated servers then.

I am incredibly surprised.
One Hour to go for unlocking!

Nice find Riz. I'll get a server up asap (after I've fixed the L4D2 servers that is).
delayed! pushed back to 3 hours!
Now it would be only no less than appropriate for this: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time
So, is it any good?
Here's some info on the map editor, it looks ridiculously easy: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Swarm_TileGen
I've had a little play in the offline mode & it's seems pretty fun, well worth the price tag!
Well I think this will be a fun game for a quick blast of shoot everything that moves and if it doesn't move shoot it until it moves and then shoot it a bit more just to be sure.
Had a quick go on the offline training thingy and enjoyed it.
Server up but it's still a bit broken (Valve are new to this server stuff you see :sideways:)
Ongoing ...
Lexander and I had a blast of this earlier with another chap and it was great fun. Will try and have a better go soon. Don't know what happened to you GhostMjr ;)
Yes had a quick go last night with Lib, Rizzy and GM.
Apart from Lib welding GM out so he couldn't get through at the start :roflmao:, GM running off and getting creamed , Rizzy shooting everything that moves with his shotgun including us , and the game upping itself to hard setting, it was good fun :D.
Definitely not a run in and shoot everything game, needs some good team work and tactics to get through the levels and I like the ability to drawn on the map to illustrate what you're on about.
Another go this evening before L4D2 lads? Get you comms sorted GM!

Appears to be working now. Locked to our Steam group so semi-private.

Errr ... no it aint. Pubbies getting in. Work in progress.
FYI, we were still getting pub's joining after you left last night Oldie.
Great game!!! Love it!!! had a blast with Target, Tutonic and Frenzy laughing most of the way. Thanks for the games and well up for more of this :)
Cheers Toby, last night was an absolute hoot!
They've clearly picked up some tips from the L4D team on how to enable 'panic mode' for maximum laughs :D
:) just wish you could of seen the smile that spread across my face when I picked up the chain saw!!!!

Oh did you slip and cut yourself? They can be a bit tricksy!
It is a good game and you must have at least three players but it gets very tough towards the end.
Pity there is only the one campaign at the moment but I'm sure more will arrive.
Its tough anyway, when playing on Hard...
Anyone still playing this one?
It's free and I like it.
