Title: more maps and different rotations?
Post by: suicidal_monkey on June 24, 2004, 04:30:13 PM
I sometimes feel that every night I play a few rounds on the server that we play the
same 5 or 6 maps, in the same order, a little too often. Perhaps it'd be possible to
lengthen the maplist by adding the same set of maps in a different order or two? Then
we won't end up playing the same set of maps on the same team each night!

on that note ... when's the next mapvote session coming up? I'm looking forward to a
few new customs, or even a few old favourites being brought back into the fray. Change
 is good!

There have been some new maps on Homer, but no-one seems to ever play them  :(
How about having a concerted effort to play test them one night (or two) and if any are any good we could incorporate them into the MH rota?

Personally I thought the old system of nominating some maps for a weeks trial and then voting a few maps in and a few out out was a belter of an idea.

It required a bit of effort on behalf of the Admins but kept the servers fresh and allowed us to experiment with TCS on some new  material.

We could always leave one server on the standard map rotation or a map list of well known and liked maps and play around with new stuff on the other?

And if there is an issue with workload we could nominate a map-boy to run the selection and voting proceedure (not me as I'm a TCS Admin not a real Admin)

There I've sorted it all out for everyone  ;)

On the subject of maps 'Alpen' (or something like that and not the cerial with rasins) is cool with some real distance sho0ting and a cable car!! Worth a trial i reckon!

Agreed! Please rework the map rota eg with old maps such as rotterdam or storm! I think mayb the admins could discuss this between themselves to see if this is a good move!

When we did have a map voting system both rotterdam and storm were voted off and have been off ever since and I think you'll find if we put it to the vote again they would still be off.

On the other hand it maybe a good idea now that the shape of dMw has changed to reintroduce the quarterly vote as to which new maps get added and which old ones go.

there's a server other than MH

I hardly ever catch a group of people playing on Homer! Why not enable map-voting on the servers or something? Then we could vote to play a map thats not in the rotation etc? Else you have to get everyone to submit a list of their favourite maps, say including 5 default maps and up to 5 custom maps. Then pick the most popular 10 (or whatever) default and 5 customs and let it loose? The latter would be better perhaps, but more of a schlep to organise...

The problem with enabling map voting (which we tried earlier this year) was that the map rotation reduced to about 3 maps.  Now that was *really* boring.

Italy! Vertigo! Havana! (and 747, and backalley, though I don't know how well they'd fit TCS)

And that's just the default maps I'd like to see. I totally agree that the rotation feels rather static at the moment though - the same maps come on at the same time every night, pretty much.

I think the current rotation of customs on homer never got played much because there was simply too much to download, alas. Some look good, but I think that with there being a couple of duffers on there it didn't work out. I hate to say it, but maybe a bit of quality control is in order - a small playtest session with just a couple of people to sift through which are bad and which are worth having a full test on. Also, none of the maps was cs_zoption, so I don't blame people for not feeling tempted.

/me wonders how many times he can plug zoption before it gets tired

---

(edit #1)

As for map voting, I quite liked the system that was in place before - sure, it ended up with a small rotation, but at least the maps people wanted to play came on, and there would be occasions where, on a whim, something unexpected would get voted on for a nice surprise.

---

(edit #2)

I think it would be better to have a larger rotation, even if that means the addition of less popular maps to flesh it out. People would, I think, welcome the variety.

Posting a link to it would be an even better way to get it tested........ Just a thought.

Guess which server has it then? Go on! Guess :)

Having had a quick look at the map. Its very dark and there appear to be only 2 or 3 main routes that the cts can use to get to the hossies. This would make it far to easy for the ts to defend. As BB says its on his server so lets have a try one night. Personnally I don't think it will suit the TCS style of play.

Remember those of us with slow connections when deciding on map changes.  I used to like going onto homer and playing new maps but at that time only one or two maps changed in a week.  The last time I went onto homer I spent more time downloading maps than playing.

Could we keep a standard rotation and just change one map every week to give us something fresh to play?  :)

Especially when the maps are as big as ~10Mb - I can't be bothered spending an hour and a half downloading something I'll maybe play once. If it was in the main rotation I'd grab it, but not for mere testing purposes.

@gfk - never mind those things. It's one of my all-time favourites, with awesome gameflow and varied gameplay. It's worth trying, as I think it'd fit TCS well. Its sister map (de_foption) is also great, but probably not TCS fare by virtue of it having three bombsites.

I see what you mean tl but at least it breaks up the monotony! But these small things do count to a great cs game thanks for listening ;)
