Title: New Map Rotations
Post by: smilodon on July 02, 2004, 12:52:15 AM
Ladies & Gentlemen,

There has been for some time a desire for a more structured approach to the various map rotations that we run on Meathook, Homer, Baldric and the CZ Server. Administering the map selection procedure and final map rotations is a complicated process and so it has fallen to me to run this part of the -=[dMw]=- community (I was the only one insane enough to volunteer for the job).

The first plan of action is to establish a fixed rotation for each of the four servers.  - DONE

Second will be a closer look at the CZ server and those maps that are either unbalanced or play poorly. - DONE

Third will be an introduction of a map voting procedure (Covered in THIS (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=6635) thread ) -
DONE
Finally when all this is in place we'll be having a Theme Night , something we have tried to set up a few times.

=====================================================

So to the map rotations.

Condition Zero Server - compliments Baldric as a match server for our Delta (CZ) squad as well as being a showcase for TCS. The maps selected are those that offer quality TCS play. As with Baldric it is hoped that the CZ Server will introduce new players to our community and the TCS style of play.

CZ Server rotationBaldric - is both our match server and our public password free server. It needs a fairly standard map rotation of known favorites. The idea is to get new visitors to drop in and play for a while. Hopefully the fact that it is a -=[dMw]=- server will encourage them to have a look at our website or forum, and maybe join the community. The four chosen maps are all rock solid and liked by almost everyone.

Baldric rotation -Meathook - would include our fixed standard rotation. This server is the mainstay of the -=[dMw]=- community. It's where we spend most of our time and where we play those maps that have been certified TCS compatiable.

MH rotationHomer - is to be used as a test bed for new maps.  This server will become the heart of our new map submission procedure and a place where we can all test the new maps for playability, preference and TCS compatiability. Any map that ends up on our standard Meathook rotation will have to first go onto Homer for evaluation. The exact procedure for changing the map rotation is detailed in THIS (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=6635) thread.

We would like to turn Tuesdays into 'Test Tuesday'. Playing on Homer would will be encouraged and you should find -=[dMw]=- Admins and Regulars there testing the new maps. Please take the time to have a look at them and offer any comments as to their quality etc.

Homer rotation -These four new rotations are now live. All the above maps can be downloaded via html while connected to the dMw servers. However there are some people, especially modem users, who find this form of download unsatisfactory. They now have the chance to download the maps from their usual source or via a Google Search, between now and Sunday.

==================================================

Organising map rotations is not an easy task and there will always be maps you don't like and probably maps that we don't run that you think we should. It's important to remember that the most important criteria for including maps on the -=[dmw]=- servers is that they are both enjoyable and challenging when played in the TCS style. No matter how great a map might be, if it's isn't TCS compatiable then it's unlikely to get on the rotation.

While it's inportant to accept my word as you would the word of God  ;)  please feel free to add your comments and suggestions.

Thanks Smilo  :D

Please note that the map rotations as displayed on the dMw website (http://www.deadmen.co.uk) are now 'live'. Any changes made to the rotation will be immediately reflected by this page.

Most of the maps in the new Meathook and Baldric rotations have been on the servers for a while now. So it's quite likely that you have them already.

However most of the maps going onto Homer for testing are brand new, so if you don't want to download them via html when you connect to the server you can get them from a number of sources.

You could Google for them, but remember to search for the zip file (i.e cs_alpin.zip rather than cs_alpin) or you'll get loads of links to stats pages or forum posts

You can grab them from the following links provided by myself and Squonk and Jamoe.

The "fast" links are from Jamoe's super speedy work connection. However to ensure they are not abused the files are passworded. The user name is dmw and the password is the current Meathook server password.

Jamoe, you may want to bring the password back into line with the current server password.  Thanks for the download facility.

Made sense to me  :)

And I'm going to start the map threads up again soon. Things seem to be settling down so maybe it's time to have a look at those rotations again?

I have uploaded some of the maps we used to run onto the server today.  Send me the rotation and I'll check them against the server ASAP.

That sounds familiar, especially the second question, is that from some sort of movie?

can we limit the number of Gladiators used by one side in CSS? I would like to suggest a maximum of 3.

Unless it's a Turkish prison map..
