Title: Friends list fix
Post by: Gh0st Face Killah on July 10, 2004, 06:32:17 PM
(poster takes no responsability for this working)

(make sure steam is closed)

Go into your steam directory and look in config. There should be some files like "friendsdata.vdf" and "userdata_*******.vdf" (where * is a number) Find that file, delete your "friendsdata.vdf" and rename the userdata to "friendsdata.vdf" (WITH .vdf or it won't work!) Start steam up. If you have more than 1 userdata, choose the one that is the biggest in size (mine was 4kb, the empty one was 1kb).

(Stolen from the steampowered forums.)

Logically this doesn't work, and I've been hearing reports in IRC to confirm my suspicions. The Friends maintenance they've been doing lately was to shift the Friends system server-side, as it was client-side before. This fix will get you your list of names back just fine, but you'll not be able to use that list for anyhting really, and it won't display the correct information about a user's whereabouts.

The best way would be to just re-add all your friends.

The perils of going server-side. (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=103640)

Fix didn't work for me. I've lost the list completely now. Ah well, you all smell anyway  :narnar:

As to the link that Maus posted; you need to go in and edit your own profile to correct it. Valve strike again! Idiots, don't they know what Quality Control is?

Worked a treat! I don't know if it's relevant but I deleted the smaller of the two userdata files(inadvertantly renamed the small one and couldn't remember the numbers  :dummy: )
