Title: BBC discusses DVD piracy
Post by: smilodon on July 12, 2004, 05:41:27 PM
HERE (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/3887189.stm)

While not even beginning to condone film piracy, I thought this example of the BBC opening it's mouth and speaking  with authority on a subject it clearly knows absolutely nothing about, might make you smile (or cry).

It seems there is no such thing as the 'free' sharing of illegal DVd's through P2P networks by normal folk (or normal folk exept that they break copyright law). It's all the work of drug dealers and terrorists.

I pay my TV licence to read this crap

So I can't win then, can I?

QuoteIt's all the work of drug dealers and terrorists.

If I pirate, drug dealers get the money.

If I buy legit, drug dealers get the money.  (I've seen VH1's History of Rock, I know where the money is going)

OK, so which is it then?  Is piracy funding terrorism (as per media conglomerates whining) or something less likely to jerk the knee of Joe Sunreader?  Also from Aunty Beeb. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/uk/3877785.stm)

"His crimes funded a luxury lifestyle of designer clothes, expensive cars, homes and holidays."  But not terrorism or drug trafficking eh, Auntie?

Imagine that - this piracy bogeyman might not be Bin Laden after all.  Shock. Horror.

My legal representatives have advised me to state that I do not condone or encourage illegal behaviour or copyright theft.

D"no, it doesn't stand for `Dodgy`"M

QuoteOutside court, David Martin, of the British Phonographic Industry's anti-piracy unit, said: "We have been after him for 13 years and he has been a thorn in our side throughout that time. "

I could accept "There's no such thing as right and wrong, there's just consensus of opinion" but I agree

When reading the article from DM's link earlier my eyes saw this:
QuoteOutside court, David Martin, of the British Phonographic Industry's anti-piracy unit, said: "We have been after him for 13 years and he has been a thorn in our side throughout that time. "

But for some strange reason my brain interpreted it as this:
QuoteOutside court, David Martin, of the British Pornographic Industry's anti-piracy unit, said: "We have been after him for 13 years and he has been a thorn in our side throughout that time. "

I’ve been mixing with you guys for too long it seems

Can you just see Auntie Mavis's hair curling when you say that ;)

Sounds like they're just trying to scare people into not pirating music etc, and also trying to appeal to peoples sense of right doing.  When will they learn :P
