Review
When a Nazi mystical experiment goes awry in 1944, the target of a wizard's spell, the child of Satan, Hellboy, is wrenched from his home, and adopted by the U.S. agents who intercept his arrival.
Raised as a force of good, Hellboy grows up to be a full-fledged demon in the form of a man, complete with fierce red skin, a tail, a giant armored glove, and two large circles where his horns should be (if they ever grow back, Hellboy is quick to break them off). Now, the adult Hellboy, an investigator of the paranormal, is sent on a mission that brings him back in touch with the evil genius that started it all... that Nazi wizard.
Accompanying him along the way are other agents, including Liz, a pyrokinetic woman Hellboy has feelings for, and Abe Sapien, a mysterious amphibian hominid...
She who must be honoured and worshiped as a Goddess saw this film in the USA back in the spring.
According to her - it's a belter of a film, carried wonderfully by Ron Perlman (whom she admits to fancying  the woman is sick beyond belief) and although about 30 minutes too long and basically utter nonsense, is still a huge load of fun. Sort of reminded her of that very rare thing, a good Schwarzenegger film.
Doesn't this review break the fabled "Forum Guidelines" on copyright ? After all, this is a uk site with members who are over 90% UK-based ;)
Tut Tut ;)
Eh?
GFk mentioned a film that opened in the USA in April 2004, that my 'signifiant other' saw legally in the US at that time and that is legally available for sale on DVD on 27th July.
What's wrong with that?
Now I'll agree it doesn't open in the UK until September, but if the distributor chooses to hold the film's UK release back for six months that's their problem not ours.
GFK is smart enough to buy it legally from the US so good luck to him. And I'm always amazed at the gleeful way so many people throw good money away paying UK highstreets inflated DVD prices. Still it's their dollar
:)
And as an added bonus £9.99 (http://www12.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2.php?product_code=11806)
Saw this on the plane over to Oz - and in true Zok form, the film can be summed up with a minimum of fuss:
Bloody Awful :(
A huge disappointment - I was really looking forward to this. I've always enjoyed watching Perlman ever since The Name of The Rose, but he is the only thing worth seeing in this. Del Toro normally delivers, but this is a stinker :(
The plot, action, and script are awful. The baddies are pathetic and lack any kind of menace, and the ending was just devoid of any kind of anticipation or suspense. Avoid unless you really like your comic book films :(

If they had tried even harder I don't think it could have become worse ...
Saw this ages ago when i was in america! Good solid film but it does have a rather obvious good vs evil storyline! It was overall though a good effort and i gave it 7/10. Or in the words of bo selecta 4 wibbly wobbly eggs
I agree with Ghost Mjr
Hellboy is about the only comic book inspired film that actually manages to retain the comic book feel. It's almost like an animated film without the animation. Someone really, really enjoyed making this film. It's daft as hell and full of CGI and action sequence after action sequence. But it never gets bogged down in it's CGI like Troy, but blasts through the scenes with a real zeal.
Pearlman was an inspired choice for the film. He adds to the energy and pace with a performance made for his gruff but humourous style.
All in all this film a daft but fun. Not worth a cinema ticket it is definately worth a DVD rental when it comes out. Mates, beers, pizza and you'll have a blast.
If you're confused by such differing opinions I sugegst you read a few online reviews and make your own mind up.
7/10
Mrs Mad wanted to give her write up on this one ......................but then she saw chimps review ..................and realised someone had beaten her to it ........
DIRE ....no story and poor CGI
we used Smilo's link to purchase for 9.99 ....and I am so glad we didn't spend more by going to the flicks to catch this one...I wasn't as disappointed in this one as The League of Extrtaordinary Gentlemen, but still could have been much better
Bright side though ...film is still so new should get me money back on ebay !!!!!!

If you knew anything about the comic books you would have realised thats a major part of the story.

Someone else who 'gets it' :D
Yup I'm with VV (hence the reason I bought it) Ron Pearlman is superb as Hellboy.

I "got it"...........I just wish I hadn't <_<
What wasn't there "to get"? Subtlety isn't a strong point on this film.
You say it's the first film that captures the "comic book feel". So does that mean two-dimensional and garish? Cause that's what it is.
The original Batman and The Crow are much better comic book adaptations that are at once gritty and feel like an animated comic. A film doesn't have to be like Transformers The Movie to retain a comic feel. X Men and Spidey let you suspend your disbelief and buy into it whilst still being good fun.
Hellboy is none of these things. David Hyde Pierce's character was one of the worst I've ever seen in a major film of this type, and can someone explain how they killed all those hell hounds? I thought two were supposed to rise for every one that died? Seems like a gaping plot hole.
Guess we'll agree to disagree, but Perlman deserved better for his first real lead role.

err u feelin alright m8?
Saw this film last nite, it sucked.
Reminded me of Buffy, but with bigger muscles (but no boobs or lesbians :( ).
Also too many similarities to X-Men films.
The only good thing was it cost be nowt to get in.
The Hellboy character was OK, but everything else was just plain stupid.
X-Men/Spiderman rocked, this rolled off the edge into the waste paper bin.
