Title: fps woe
Post by: Maus on August 08, 2004, 09:21:22 PM
I get around 40fps in CZ most of the time, which considering I get a solid 100 in CS is quite a comedown. I'm pretty sure my comp (p4 3GHz, 9800pro) should be able to deliver better than that, especially since I don't have AA or AF on. Any suggestions for things I can fiddle with?

Are you rendering in OpenGL or DirectX? OpenGL is usually faster in counterstrike and I assume CZ would be similar but then i'm sure loads of people are about to chip in and tell me I'm talking rubish ;)

Is the MaxFPS setting in your CZ config file set to 60 or 72; try setting it to 100?

PS I know nothing about CZ so don't trust me :)

I think it is environmental effects that cuase it - I am okay within buildings in italy_cz, but if I am looking outside my fps dies. The same is true in aztec, and to a certain extent in office. I haven't played the game enough to have found other maps my computer is slow on, though I played through the single-player game while I was waiting for it to update (whick took ~30 hours - sheesh), and had no fps issues then, so maybe it is something from the update that caused it.

Try putting this in your userconfig.cfg:

r_detailtextures 0

Also, in your game properties add -heapsize xxxxxx

Replace xxxxxx with 75% of your total memory in KB, e.g. if you have 512 MB RAM then heapsize should be 393216 (1 MB = 1024 KB).

Yes, detailtextures should help some. I have full detailtextures on the default CS maps though and it's fine on all bar Aztec, which seems to support my idea that it's the environment effects screwing me up a bit. Turning detailtextures off on aztec fixes it there, but I like detailtextures muchly and all the research the NS and HI mappers (it was in those communities that detailtextures was best explored when it was first implemented) points to them having a very minimal impact on fps.

Or to put it another way: turning off detailtextures will probably fix it, but I don't want to, dagnammit!   <_<

I have a AMD XP2500+ Barton and a 9800 Pro. I run CZ in 1280x1024 without any problem at the max setting. Check your open GL settings again.

Oh, yes - this sounds familiar.  I had similar woes with my 9700 Pro.  Check the values of ati_npatch and ati_subdiv.  Set both to zero if they aren't already.  See how you get on with that...

Edit:I found CZ had these value set to 1 and 2 respectively by default.  FPS would be 85 (with Vsync) then drop to 42 whenever I looked at anyone.  Changing those parameters worked for me.
