QuoteOriginally posted by smilodon@Aug 11 2004, 08:21 PMI am trying to organise an internet connection - I'm waiting for them to come back to me, so it may not be a problem. If not then we'll post a procedure.
A working procedure for how not to log out of your Steam and find you're unable to start CS would be a help.

Sorry, I didn't understand the terminology. umm I dunno if you use hubs but I've got a '3com superstack 11 Hub 10' thing someone gave me but never used - if it's useful I can bring it along - just lemme know. We will be using switches rather than hubs on the day. dMw has 2 x 24 port switches and we are usually more than supported by two or 3 CISCO switches. This will give us all plenty of connection points.
A hardware list will be posted in due course. TL.

I'm small, delicate and insecure, so I think Benny should set my PC up first of all.
Then we should haul the thread back on topic. Our resident nerds (and we have far more than is really healthy) go into Over-Geek Mode at the LAN and sort everything out for us. Computer duffers like me, Doorman and Dingo sit in the bar, drink much ale and comment on what a bloody decent bunch of blokes they really are. So as long as you bring the bits mentioned above in Sadakos piece of exquisite plagiarsim, you'll be sorted :)

Oh bollox - My brother has been arsing around with my comp for ages setting up wireless LAN access in our house so he can print and use broadband on his laptop from anywhere in the house.
I therefore have absolutely no idea if i have a NIC or not :( Sorry, I'm not fluent in the techy stuff. I know there's a big grey box on my tower that says "NetGear", but apart from that I have no idea. Any way on xp to very quickly and easily tell if he's put a NIC in or not?

Do you have a 'network connection' on the back of your PC? If you connect somehow to your home network then you are probably doing it via a network card (unless you hve a wireless PCI card installed.
If not don't worry! A cheap network card (NIC) only costs £10 or so. TL.

Yes please. It's a new room, so the routing may need to be a little different.

I'm sure it's somewhere, but could you post a noddy guide to shutting down your PC, so everyone doesn't have to trapse to FatBobs house to get their PC steamed up, offlined or whatever it is?

THIS POST HAS BEEN AMMENDED SO CHECK IT AGAIN
Yeah what a bunch of prats they were eh. Do this ON THURSDAY NIGHT ABOUT TEN PM AS PER OLDIES POST. IF YOU DO THIS FRIDAY MORNING YOU MIGHT PICK UP A STEAM UPDATE THAT NONE OF THE REST OF US OR THE LAN SERVER WILL HAVE. THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE LAN GAME!!!! Thursday 10pm 1. Connect to the Internet 2. Start Steam 3. **CRUCIAL** If you DO have the 'do not save account details on this computer' checked then enter your password and UNCHECK THE BOX. If you don't you'll loose your password details from the login screen and will not be able to play CS at the LAN **CRUCIAL** 4. Log onto Steam 5. Click 'Exit' on the Steam menu and quit Steam 6. Disconnect from the Internet 7. Start Steam and when the dialog box appears click 'offline mode' 8. Make sure Steam starts and you can fire up CS 9. Exit Steam again 10. Try restarting Steam again. 11. Run a complete Anti-virus scan. 12. Go to bed 13. Wake up 14. Go to the LAN In a nutshell just make sure you can connect to Steam without being asked for your password. If you are asked to type in your password you're not going to be able to play at the LAN |
