Well, tbh I am not that much in awe. The story is as usual overused and the only new thing in it is the graphics. Played the first level and suprisingly all hell breaks lose and I were there with a shotgun, who could have figured. ;)

Sure it is dark and the bad guys are lurking everywhere. The music/sound is moody but not that scary. I run it on 9800Pro in "medium" at 800x600. The graphics suffer when you don't have the latest card and it is halo/wolfenstein/any fps with the same theme kind of game. The only thing I was really positive about is that they have removed hitboxes and you actually need to hit the object to hit it if you know what I mean.

Will have another look this weekend but I wasn't thrilled beyond excitement tbh.

I can run around in the dark, knowing there were some tremendous graphics that I could see if only I had a torch, but hang on, I do, only I can't use that and shoot.  

Hang on turning a corner, go through a door, I wonder if there'll be some dribbling imbecile that'll get a cheap shot because I can't see him, then I'll find him shoot him a few times, and as if by magic, find some health and repeat ad naueseum. (That pretty much means 'over and over' for you Scottish).

Pretty, crap story, promising for the first ten minutes as you pass lots of passively active players, oh hang on....flickery light, I'll be right with you once I've shot whatever twat is going to jump at me from the shadows.

Wolfenstein was ok until it turned into this crap in the underground bit.

Why can't anyone make a good game anymore? This is as Zok so rightly put....ok.

If by ok, you mean average, and your defenition of average is like sitting down to strain and strain and then producing what can only be described as disappointing. You've put the effort in, you got the result, but you can't help feeling disappointed.

benny m8 there are  mods out fot the game already one of them is a gun with the torch which should solve your problem....

ill try find out where i got this information from and bring it back to you.

Cheers Doris, but the truth is, I really can't be TANGO'd. I shouldn't have to go looking for ways to make it better.

Mods suck anyway, (erm....bugger....CS). ;)


EDIT: Having re-read that, I don't want any rockers out there being offended, so rockers, you make up for it with good foreplay.

Started playing round a mates hes got a p4 3ghz and a fatest gc and it was rather jolty had to put it down to 800 by 600 odd that but the game so far is ok... now to play it on my machine

Doom 3 is a total waste of money IMHO!  I am playing it on 800 x 600 (Medium) and it is slow (P4 2.66GHz, FX 5700 Ultra and shit loads of DDR), It plays, but the speed of the game is CRAP!

Got it today, uninstalled it one hour later, if anyone wants it for £20 inc P&P, let me know! You welcome to it.  Unless you have a bleeding edge PC, don’t even bother.  

I found the graphics in Max Payne 2 to be just as good - and the speed was there to boot!!! Same for Pain-Killer (in fact people would be better off getting Pain Killer, superb graphics, cheaper and much faster).  What the !%$K as ID done!!!

THE GAME IS A %^^$ing total disappointment!!!

I just hope im not as demanding as you lot. ;)

To save clicking about here it is.

In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.

Find the line:

seta image_cacheMegs "32"

I changed 32 to 96.

I got a nice boost in performance. I dunno if the tweak worked or not (maybe my machine did something wierd, have no clue), so I'm just seeing if this works for others as well, or if a different setting works better than others.

Add me to the list of people who are thoroughly enjoying it. Don't know how far into it I am, but as yet the biggest baddies I've faced are the dog-like things that seem to replace pinky demons. It's made me jump a couple of times, but I'm finding it a bit on the easy side at the moment - the only times I've died have been when I shot a barrel by accident and blew myself up, and when I missed a jump. Otherwise, I'm just walking through all the enemies.

Its a at the post office waiting for me! shame game didn't send it out earlier! Hope it is good but i am worried if it will work with only 256 ram!

well I finished the first level.

Found that mod that puts a flash light on your shotgun and basic rifle.

Am i enjoying it?  Yep.

Has it scared me? Yep.

Did it give me a headache last night?  yep (straining in all those dark corners and waiting for nasties to jump me)

I don't like that duct tape mod. Sure, it's a bit annoying to have to keep switching to flashlight and back, but it's part of the game and adds to the atmosphere. They designed it to be dark, and a lot of its fun seems to be in these unseen guys emerging from the shadows.

In fact, there's only been one time the gun/flashlight switching has annnoyed me, and I discovered after I'd offed the baddies that there was a lightswitch on a computer in that room, so id had made it fair - it was my own fault I had to faff with the weapon switching.

However, I'm wondering if Doom3 has decent scripting support. Being able to bind a button such that when you hold it down you get your light out and when you release you put it away would be very handy.

I think id's stated minimum is 384Mb, but with a bit of tweaking you should be okay. If not then RAM upgrades are relatively cheap and more RAM is always handy, whatever you're doing.

This is something that confuses the bejeebus out of me, but I see it all over the place. How can so many people who play HL mods [/i]not[/i] have played Half Life?

If HL wasn't accepted as one of the best PC games of all time it might be understandable.

Well the thing is - you wait and wait for the game to be released, it seems like years and you finally install it to find:

1. The game's graphics are not really that mind blowing, well at least on medium.
2. The game runs slowly on a PC that is far above the minimum specs given on the box.
3. To get the best out of the graphics, you need to run it on something like this costing mega bucks!!!

No, ID $%&*ed up here, especially when other developers can come up with superb graphics and an engine that runs the game at speed.  :angry:

Have you tried tweaking it scooby? Tweaks took mine from a slightly jerky experience at 800x600 to a schmoove ride at 1024x768, on high detail.

A good one to change is the sound quality - you have to be very picky to tell the difference between 22kHz and 44kHz, so turning it down helps a bunch with little noticeable change.

Maus ty for the advise but blueball has my copy of the game or will do on Monday or Tuesday.  Tried messing with it to improve performance, but no luck here.  Too be honest, I think my PC sucks!! Had the same problem with Far Cry demo.

Oh well back to UT2004 I guess!

hello everyone , well i have played a litle now and i am waiting to play more , i agree with bouth sides of not beeing such a good game and beeing a good game , i liked doom 1 and 2 , and it was in the revolution of the age of 3d games , dont compare this game with others , a big 3d game fan like me and i am sure like most of you here will surely play it untill the end , and i personaly dont compare this game with hits like the upcoming Half-Life 2 , or Unreal Tournement 2004 , or even Counter Strike Condition Zero , i compare it with games from the same type like the other Dooms or Half Life 1 and the expansion packs , and it surely beets them , maybe Unreal 2 was a litle better , and Halo also , but its a game that could go in the top 50 , well hope you all enjoy it like i have and will.

BTW, could also get the AlienWare kit on HP to play DOOM 3 at full specs, but would I be happy - NO, just sleepless nights and no wife when she finds out!!! :rolleyes:

There are a lot of decent guys on the servers (try DonD server) and many are making a real effort to use voice comms to promote teamplay and increase the enjoyment of the mod. Some real cool maps (and some boring ones TBH) but gameplay tends to be different each time I play.  You'll laugh at the number of people asking "Where are the cross hairs?" or "Why are there no american/british units in the mod?

It is quite realistic :)

Heartily recommended now if only I could get on the servers more.

I'm not really into stuff that scares me around every corner. That flash light on the gun is really just small spot over the cross heir.  I dont think its lessoned the experaince for me, as it bobs about and makes aimng a touch harder. Also when the lights go out and all u can see is the tiny spot infront of the gun its scarier as u cant focus on any of the darker areas around it.

But thats just me :)

Anyone had problems with the sound cutting out? I may have the graphics turned up too high but I've tried playing this a few times now and it will work OK for a short while and then just cut out.. :(

My problem is colour related.

I cannot play CS immediately after playing Doom as the colours are screwed. I have to restart to return them to normal??? :huh:

Driver issue? I can swap quite happily. You on ATi or nVidia? If nVidia I use 61.77 drivers and they work OK.

Found a good tweak site. (from a link of a link to a link by a link that someone posted a link to on this forum)

I have been struggling to get decent fps with this until i found this site.

Copied and pasted the average quality/average fps tweaks to my autoexec file and now get 60fps at 1024x768. (previously 20-30)

i took the brute force approach 6800Gt to get 60fps. As you cannot go above that I haven't bothered tweaking other than telling it that I have a 256meg card

High Quality, 1024x768, drivers set to Quality not performance :)

I think it was an inspired decision to make the player do this. I think it really works if, like me, you're the sort of Doom player that takes it slowly. It really adds to the tension IMHO.
