Title: Seating Plan
Post by: smite on August 21, 2004, 04:35:04 PM
I know that the last LAN people were not happy at first but when put into practice i think everyone was glad that it happened.

Do you agree?

If so i am planning on driving upto the Oliver Cromwell in a few weeks to have a look at the room, tables, chairs and dimensions.

Would TL, Oldie or anyone else care to take a look also?

When i have the info i am after i will post the proposed plan here first.

Yes please, I'd like to have alook around to assess little things like tables, cabling and BB access.  If possible we should book as the room is in use a reasonable amount.

Talk to the hotel - Saturday at 3pm they usually have a wedding in there.......so you may want to choose a diff day/time.

As an original opponent of the seating plan, it was obvious I was wrong and it's a sound idea. I was in March last week and will be back there next week. The hotel looked lovely through the torrential rain

I believe Smitee has arranged access to review the room at 11am on Bank Holiday Monday?  I'll be there too, so hopefully we can review what tables they have, their AV equipment for the big screen, power and cabling runs etc.  I am also still waiting for a call back from their IT chap regarding getting access to their BB connection so if I have not heard by then I will make sure I sort it on the day.

I have been trying to speak to someone all week regarding this......... im not impressed with them so far.

The manager is the scarlett pimperTANGOinL.

IT staff.... what IT staff sir we go through a third party company.... But i was informed that you had someone who deals with the IT for the Hotel.....Not sure who that could be sir.

I have spoken to at least 4 different people and the only decent one was the first who i cant now get hold of.

So ..for monday... There will be nobody to show us around as there are no staff except the receptionist .........Soooooo we will be given the key and left to have a look at the room ourselves.

TL is this OK for you?

Please take a look at these images and pick the one you think best.

I personally like number 5.
Please point out anything obvious and i can change it.

Once the layout is decided i will start adding the best seating for people.

Title: Seating Plan
Post by: TeaLeaf on August 30, 2004, 09:45:14 PM
My take on the plans is based on several things:

- 21.6 feet room width
- 49.2 feet room length
- we need to seat 43 peeps (there were 44 on the list and I removed Albert leaving 43) - I know the plans are based on seating 42, my apologies for my mistake.

- we need 6 feet per length of desk
- we ideally need 6 feet per depth/width of desk
(2.5 feet for the desk plus 3.5 feet for the chair & person sitting, this leaves about 18 inches passing room at the back if the person is seated with chair pulled in to the table)

Plan: Width Needed; Length Needed; Any room for expansion

Plan 1: 18;48;No
Plan 2: 18;48;Yes
Plan 3: 24;48;Yes
Plan 4: 24;42;Yes
Plan 5: 24;42;Yes

I prefer the people flow of Plan 5 too, but (and this is a big butt - mine in fact) I think that dropping the average space per width of desk from 6ft to 5'4" would be difficult.  On this basis I reluctantly drop plans 3, 4 and 5 :(

Of the final 2 plans both meet the room dimensions and space dimensions but only one leaves any chance for expansion (ie the 43rd place), so on that basis I would think we would be best going for plan 2.

Looking at Plan 2 from a cabling point of view it might be best to swap the two lefthand rows to leave a full row at the far end of the room and the OB/TL row second from the left.  This would allow easier routing of cables back to the switches and servers.

Also, the projector table could be added to our row (at the bottom) to project directly onto a screen opposite (door side wall), this would be helpful as the projector needs to be linked up to a server!

Finally, I would shift the rows of desks so that they are all up against the top wall (ie the wall opposite the door) as this will allow the cables to be run directly down that same wall to the servers at top left hand corner and put the projector a few feet away from the wall for projecting purposes.

This would leave the main circulation area as along the door-side wall.

What do you think Smite?  If in agreement can you redraw one please?

Made with the gap between giving 6ft including desk.

pic 6 (http://www.smitethee.co.uk/LAN6/seat6.JPG)

I have been trying to add extra people into this plan in various ways and cannot fit anymore in above 44 without just sticking one more in a corner...... ahh i have found ghostmjr's spot.

Plan 6 seems the only way to run cable between the rows of desks (along the back wall). without there being the danger of someone tripping over them. So  plan 6 looks the best.

I think anyone who has already been to a LAN gets first dibs on being away from him!  A far corner sounds a good start though ;)

Right it seems we have quite a few people dropping out now so TL could you please Give me a list of who is still coming .....ta.

It looks like Mars and Thursday arn't as they have not booked a room and not been in contact for quite some time.

I could also do with the IP's for assigning to people like we did last time. (Give me the start number and i will do the rest ie: 192.168.20.200) and i will make up the nice triangle tags for the top of the monitors......if i can grab the laminating machine.

As for a private IP range then go ahead and use 192.168.0.1 upwards (subnet mask of 255.255.255.0).
A printed list of IPs with names (and some blanks) against it would be helpful to have at the LAN.
There should be two main servers at the LAN.

Smite, would you mind faxing that to the hotel on my behalf and advising them that this is the latest floorplan we require.  They said their 'maintenance man' would set up the tables as per the plan - you'll need to identify the tables as 6 or 4ft etc.

Cheers.

TBH we may aswell get him to do it as it was and we can remove the other ones ourselves just incase there are a few unforseen problems with people on the day.

And it isnt really that hard move a few tables on the day.
