I'm on the hunt for an aDSL modem to replace my Speedtouch USB one. The Speedtouch has always been temprimental and doesn't hold a connection very well.
I run a single PC and don't fancy spending extra money on wireless or a router as I need neither. I was recommended a D-Link DSL 300T but there are plenty of reviews that say it's build quality is pants. Anyone got any recommendations?

I got a speedtouch USB thing and it seems pretty reliable...though I am going to network this house properly at some point, hopefully with a wireless router with attached switch for wired gaming connections. Pity going wireless isn't so cheap!!!

I've got the Speedtouch USB also......not the most reliable...drops a couple of times a day.

I'm toying with getting a Netgear DG834. It does have a built in 4 port router which I don't really need, but it gets some fair reviews and is reasonably cheap (£66.00)

thts the one i have smilo no probs and it is secure! Its gone down a bit in price since i got it but its a bargain! Easily setup and there is 24/7 netgear support on and offline. You know its right to go netgear ;)

It's a good little router - for the price. The SPI firewall works well, provided you don't turn off NAT. However, if you want 24/7 uptime look elsewhere.
I had a DG834, replaced now with a DG834G for fiddling with wi-fi. Although they're very easy to setup, and fine for my needs, they do have the rather annoying trait of resetting themselves every now and again. There are also reported problems of uPNP not working properly with them.
If neither of those things apply to how you will use your setup, then I'd say go for it.
I've been using the Speedtouch 510v4 for almost two years now. It had a very good review on ADSLGuide.org.
It's a modem/4 port router with built in firewall. Perfect for me and trouble free.
I've connected a NetGear WAP so I can use my laptop about the house. I'm running 3 machines off of it at the moment and it rarely (say once every three months?) goes down. If it does, a simple reset is all that is required. I personally think that the disconnect is due to the ISP messing with things but again, mine's not a USB connection which I wouldn't trust.
They're cheaper now to boot.

I'd love to get wireless, but I'm not sure whether it's worth getting a fully-all-in-one box or to look at a wired router now and get the wap later when I'm ready for it, ...if I can persuade the uni to let me have a laptop for work like...

I'm with Ninja, I have a Speedtouch 570 had it for 3 years now and it has only been powered off when we moved house 2 years ago. I have lost connectivity about 6 times in 3 years and onyl twice in the last 2 years.
It is easy to setup, secure enough, veyr reliable and cheap.
So the Alcatel Speedtouch range is a good solid performer and good price.
I have the wireless verison, veyr handy and cheap these days, mine cost me £250 it now about 80 quid.
