Why don't England send a football team? The rigours of the premiership?
And your views on the events. We had a discussion at lunch yesterday about what 'felt' like an olympic sport and what didn't. We decided things like tennis / football weren't as they already have huge defining events in other competitions.
Athletics I can see as olympic and the backbone, swimming too, gymnastics...not a big fan of horseriding of any type, but it doesn't really celebrate only human achievement.....
Cos we would get destroyed as usual
The horse riding is my favourite event aswell :P Its thrilling to see those horses jump over the gates :lmfao:
Athletics is definately the main part of the Olympics, but the swimming has no other main competition and so there is alot of pool action :D
I found the cycling was probably the most exciting to watch, maybe because the timings were so close :S
I think its something todo with already having seperate English, Scotish, Welsh and Irish teams?
Im not sure of the exact reasons but i tihnk its something todo with the above.
HOLD THE PRESS: i founds this
QuotePrevious calls for a united British team that could compete at the Olympics have foundered because it could undermine the position of the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations, which are all individually represented on FIFA and which all field teams in major football competitions.

The original Olympics were slanted around those skills that would be of use in battle - running, jumping, spear throwing, horsemanship skills etc.
If you wanted to be purist about it then anything that could be beneficial in battle would make a good Olympic Sport so I can understand shooting and (to a certain extent) sailing being added.
However, "Sorry your Honour. I didn't mean to kill him I just didn't realise that the ping pong bat was quite so sharp" doesn't quite cut it for me
where does beach volley ball fit into all of this then?
entertainment for the soldiers? :dummy: :dribble: :norty:

Just saw the boxing match between Amir Sha and the korean guy and I must say I was pretty amased what a 17 year old "boy" could do.
Dont miss his next match!!
Well you have to qualify for the football event in the olympics, that is done in the Euro under 21 playoffs (you know what i mean), and i think its only like the first three teams from europe that are sent (Sweden finished fourth). And there is also a fixed number of players over 21 or so that can attend, also the olympic football tournament isnt really held in any high respect atleast not in europe, i believe Cameroon is reigning champions...
Still its fun to watch. :worship:
For me ...the whole Olympic movement stood for Amateur athletics ...yes I know things have moved on a bit since then ..........................................................
but
one thing I do not agree with is the idea that countries that already think they own the world (USA) think that they can send all their NBA stars as a "DREAM TEAM" to walk all over all the smaller more unfortunate countries ..........(as a somewhat added bonus their "dream team" this time has struggled !!! :lmfao: )
this rule also applies to the footy & tennis....
The spirit of the games is gone !!!!!!!!!!!
my 2p worth
:withstupid:
Couldn't agree more.
