Where does a mobo take its temperature from?
My PC shuts down from time to time without warning.
Sometimes it runs for hours, other times it seems to run for 10-15mins then shuts down.
I have a side panel fan, two rear fans, Aero 7 cpu fan.
Mobo is Asus A7N8X Deluxe v2.
CPU temp stays around 24C/75F.
Mobo temp is around 44C/111F.
I got an avg mobo temp of 31 C and ive never had a prob like that. I got same mobo, have u looked up whats the "safe" maximum temp?
Asus Probe 2 has alarm set at 60/140 for Mobo Temp.
What case cooling do u use?
In my sonata i just got one 120mm fan running off of the psu special fan connector. This increases the fan power as the case gets warmer . I havent OC'd anything either. I go for noise levels atm :)

You must have got these the wrong way round, surely?
24 mobo and 44 CPU I can believe, but not the other way around! This level of temps is cool so you have zero worries.
BIOS can cause dodgy temp readings. On my Abit NF7-S v2.0 I had to disable the PC health monitoring as it occassionally borked the system and made it sound like an american cop car on acid.
Personally I would disable the BIOS 'health monitoring' if you can. It fixed it for me and I am running the nuts of an overclocked and overvolted XP1700 - and it never hits greater than 52 degrees under full load (F@H 24/7).
TL.
Out of curiosity from a hardware noob, how do you find out what temperature things are running at? My system is completely stable, but the case often gets rather hot - I'm thinking it probably needs some more cooling, but I have no idea how much help it needs.
Motherboard Monitor (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download.html) for example? Try it, there are others, but MM is often used.
TL.
Yeah i was thinking about the cpu and mobo temps possibly being hte wrong way round but its quite possible i spose.
My mb is at 58o is that bad? Ive got one of those air streem cases with 2 fans front and back(90mm) plus a cooler master 3000amd fan for my 2500....sigh well at least it works i guess maybe i should get a new cpu fan.
i would start getting worried when it gets to around the 65 C mark, it depends how far u like the push the heat. As for ur fans, that should be fine, wats the rpm ?
Make sure that theres a good air flow through the case aswell, alot of the time, if u have lots of messy cables it can make a large difference to the temps if u sort them out a bit.
EDIT: I use centigrade (schools these days, what will they teach next? u oldies say :narnar: ) And i dont know how to do the "degrees" sign :( will be in characters map somewhere i suppose
What's your CPU temp? And are we talking centigrade of fahrenheit?
TL.
I recently added a fan to the front of my case to pull air in as I felt the case was getting warm. Made a huge difference even though it onl runs at about 500 RPM (nice and quiet). I guess internal temps dropped 3 to 5 C
If I had a case temp of 65 degrees centigrade then I'd be real worried, because that would mean my CPU would be running at circa 85 degrees
The laws of thermodynamics say that an air cooled CPU cannot be running cooler than the air that is cooling it. If you reckon your mobo is hotter than your CPU then you got some screwy temperature readings.
TL.
unless the mobo temp sensor is in a no airflow hotspot? take the case side off and see what happens.
Even so, that's one hell of a hot spot
TL.

QuoteOriginally posted by Thulsa Doom@Aug 26 2004, 12:01 PM nope, CPU/Mobo temps not wrong way round unless Asus Probe software is faulty. Airflow may be a prob tho, so is it better to shove air into the system or vent it? Both. If you only shive air in then you OC blows up like a balloon ;) If you only extract air then your PC will suck :P Balance the air in with air out, that way you get a good flow. Your temp readings are totally bolloxed and wrong. Either software or hardware, doesn;t matter which, they are wrong. Simple logic dictates that something must be wrong. Otherwise your expensive HSF will simply be heating your CPU as ambient temperature is higher than the CPU core............ TL.
Yup, PSU normally blows air out so having a fan to suck air in will help things tremendously.
IMPORTANT!
The placing of the fan sucking in is important. Do not put it next to the PSU as you will just circulate air in one corner of the box. You are best having the in fan diagonally opposite the out fan so that you get maximum airflow across the box without creating "eddies".

I'll post a pic of CPU/case fan placements 2nite.

58 0c i ment and me thinks its so high because the psu has a 120mm fan right next to the chip so maybe some sort of exhaust pipe inclosing the cpu to the case exterior?
im in the process of of updating my bios. It seems to be reporting lower temps now, which also make more sense.
so you could try flashing your bios.
(a side note is that my onboard ethernet card has come to life after the flash woot :D )
Well, i installed Mobo Monitor on Tealeaf's link and even tho i selected correct board etc, the monitoring went fubar. I then uninstalled it, installed latest version of Asus Probe and it is now displaying the monitoring of CPU/Mobo temps to show what TL suspected i.e. CPU temp is now higher than mobo temp which makes sense.
I have also reversed a chassis fan so one is blowing in, the other blowing out. CPU temp seems to be OK for now.
I also keep a window open during gameplay. Sux during rainy season :D
