So any player that has been relegated, no matter at what stage in their career isn't deserving of an England spot?

Following your logic, perhaps all goalies, just for this example, who haven't played in any lower division than the premiership should not be selected?

Players tend to improve up to a certain age,  Robinson is 24.

I'll agree that Kirkland has potential too however.

Used to be that Scottish goalies were the butt of all footy jokes.  I see the tide is turning (our goalies probably still suck tho) :)

Isn't Dudek first choice scouse keeper anyway? I've always defended James, but I'm beginning to think that you can only have so many chances.

I still don't get the relegation point, it makes no sense.

well i think it does because to be religated there must of been a lot of goals conceded. Yea i no it isnt the keepers fault normaly but a good keeper sould be able to organise hi defence so a shot cant be taken.

so for the teams they play in to be religated they have let a lot of goals in compared to the other keeper from dif countrys who have not let many goals in many cus they can organise there defence, and they do have more tallent.

If you look at James he puts himself in akward situations alllways in no mans land which makes it very hard for himself, he will pull off unbelievable saves but then will make a stupid mistake which is why he isnt world class  <_<

You read the Observer too Chimp?

Cudicini does qualify as English, but I'd pick the in form Robinson over him.

As for the relegation thing, I don't think you can blame a keeper for what was a dire Leeds side with the sulk Viduka and the like not remotely taking an interest in saving the club. I'll think about it today, but I'm sure there are some outstanding players that have been relegated.

I do agree with your James comments though. It seems a shame that he blots his copy ook when he apppears to have such potential......Stan Collymore anyone?

Don't think James suffers from Collymore's self-destructive tendencies off the pitch though. Never thought of him as reliable, I think he's had his chance and let someone else take over after failing to perform on key occasions.

It's far easier to spot the qualities of a keeper as they're less integrated into the team around them. It would be quite easy to recognise that a keeper for a Championship (sic) side could step up into international level by his performances for his club. That said, England have always chosen to ignore smaller teams when it came to international recognition, Hoddle was so short sighted he only considered Spudz players for the squads.

i didnt no this, tbh i would play him he is 1 of the best shot stoppers in europe maybe doesnt always hold the ball but stop near enough everything from going in. i couldnt believe it when i herd chealse had got a new keeper

and no you cant blame robinson i no the position he was in a team not doing well n having so many shots on you....he had no chance but u cant blame the team for everything its down to a keeper to make sure the team plays as a team and if players dont listen they should be in the squad...

It's not IMO.

The captain, the coach, the manager all come into play before the keeper. The keeper is in chargeof defensive line ups for defending, but not much else.

Cudicini was a fantastic keeper, but it just wouldn't feel right would it?

Why not we have a foreign coach. And lets face it it happens in athletics all the time sometimes with only a couple of weeks notice before big meetings. Last week I was american and not racing this week I'm british and racing........ <_<

I don't read the Observer Benny - it's just my encyclopaedic knowledge of the beautiful game ;)

GK are fickle things - stick an average keeper behind a great defence and you get a great goalkeeper.  Stick a great goalkeeper behind a shocking defence and you soon find out that one man doesn't make too much difference.

GK have to accept a responsibility for results, but that shoudn't be any more or less than other players (and certainly not more than coaches), as Benny said.

The problem with James is that he's a great athlete and every now and again makes great shot-stopping saves, therefore he often gets lauded.  This often saves his skin when it comes to the simple stuff that he can't do.  Like catching  <_<

How about Nige Martyn to add to that list - almost single-handedly kept Everton up last year, but regularly overlooked.

Great players are always getting relegated - just means they're in a poor squad, not that they're a bad player.  Blackburn got relegated the year after winning the championship - does that mean all their players turned rubbish over night?  Unlikely.  In fact I'd go so far as to say a GK in a struggling team would not necessarily be a bad thing - at least they're getting plenty of practice :)  Steve Bull was a great player in the old Div 1 who regularly scored for England during his brief appearances - no reason we couldn't have a GK do the same.  Anything but Calamity.

But I agree with Benny - naturalising a player like Cudicini should be a last resort (like grabbing a Giggs or Duff to sort out the left wing).  We've named 5 or 6 folks who are more able than James, so resorting to Carlo shouldn't be necessary.  Plus he isn't even in the Chelsea side at the moment since Cech came in.

very good point there about the keeper being more active in a less skilled side, i just feel that a gk at a team who keeps getting beaten will loose is confidence watching the ball fly in the back of the net week in wee out does that to a keeper and another thing about religation, James was taken from West Ham to play for Man city last season and after that they were nearly religated but the team was playing poor was just pointing it out.

Also a keeper thats in a loosing side is always in the spot light so you are going to see him do amzing saves but also he will let a lot in aint an easy job being the last line

u said James catn catch which is the main problem we have weak a weak wing so we get lots of crosses coming in on us.

It wouldnt feel right benny no but if we really wanted to win
