Hello all, seems that i'm always on here questioning you all on whether you can help my problems that i keep getting.
Anyone, this one :
At work, many new XP Machines coming onto the network.
Found a very annoying problem to do with the printers.
Situation:
Local Printer added to a machine... i login, its there and useable. I login as another user, its there and useable.
Network Printer... i login, i add the printer, its useable. I login as another user, but now, the printer isn't there, i have to re-add this printer to enable this user to use the printer. Not much of a problem if its a small network. BUT, imagine say 1500 users (thats just the pupils  and say 500 computers... everytime a user logs into a new machine, they will have to add the printer, this isn't on...
It doesn't occur with local printers as they are connected directly, but when wanting to use a network printer it has to be added each time you login to a PC (only once though, if i login to the same machine again, its stored it for my user id...)
Is that confusing or have i made it clear enough? Or said to much again :D
Hehe, sorry.
Please help me find a cure for this annoying problem.
P.s, not all PC's are XP (yet) we are so shoddy we still have 95, 98 and XP... some of the laptops even have ME
Have you tried installing the printers under the Administrator account?
Knew I had the answer somewhere.
You need to add the printer to the "default user" profile.

How much do they pay you Bunce?
Funnily enough I have a problem along those lines too. Set up is: 3 pcs one netgear FR114P router/print server. All three pcs have the required software, i.e. Netgear print server drivers, all see the port on the router and on the face of it no arguments. However, when you try to print anything the printing window sits there saying 'printing job etc.' but does nothing else. There was one successful print job on my main pc but that can't be replicated. Oh latest router firmware too.
It looks as though I may have to revert to using one usb and one parallel port if I can't find an answer. :dummy:
Have you tried to get newer print server drivers?
Speaking from experience ...
Are you sure your printer is 'network friendly'?
Many need to be directly connected to a PC.

Ahah! That sounds like a good excuse to spend some money. Any reccos?
And the print server drivers are the only one's I can find
Just did a 'start from scratch and do it nice and slowly' job and I think you're right Oldie. As they are not very exciting bits of kit I'll simply revert to direct connection. It's an HP Deskjet 930c, a bit long in the peripherals I reckon but it'll have to stay. Thanks for your time chaps.
BlueBall, ur answer seems to be the best for me :)
Question i have with it though is:
It may install a default printer... great... but we need lots of printers added, and as you cant have more than 1 DEFAULT printer, i'm wondering if it will still be able to add all the other printers correctly?
We have one (secret decent) printer here connected to a PC, then everyone uses the PC for a printer gateway type thing. Works fine.
A print server if you will......hint.

I guess it would be down to expanding the reg file mentioned in the linked article to add all of the printers you need to the default user - this would be much easier in a pure AD environment - ditch your old kit :)
