Title: XFX 5700 LE (geforce) card
Post by: FBG on September 13, 2004, 11:37:57 AM
This is a tale of two sides. The first side is i managed to pay less than the card is worth and get Doom 3 effectively for free.

The second side is i cant play any of my games because of artifacts screwing up everything. Text is scrambled and the 3d graphics are truely messed up. UT, Doom3, DuesX, counterstrike all dont work.

I thought it might be over heating as my wireless card literally sat on top of the fan, i removed the card and it still didn't work. Windows works fine so i figured its to do with directX9 and the card not liking something.

All drivers are uptodate.

So i've narrowed the problem down to the fact that the mothereboard says it supports AGP x4 but the card is only supporting X2 even though its an AGP X8 card.

Im assuming it doesn't like working at the lowest end of its capabilities. So i figure i'll upgrade the motherboard and cpu, addmitedly there quite shit 1.2mhz cpu. What would you guys recomend? I figure im looking at an AMD ATX motherboard and cpu. Just dont know what make to go for.

I remember why i gave up upgrading, its far to much effort.

Have a look on google for a program called RivaTuner (think you can get it from the "Guru of 3D" site) which may allow you to sort out AGP speeds. You may also wish to use RivaTuner to enable or disable WriteCombining as this can cause probs sometimes too.

Additionally, have a look in control panel and set everything to application controlled and quality (a good starting point). In the extra setting tab there is an option for text offset and it is best to set that to 3.

It's also worth checking that the card is properly seated in the AGP slot and that the cable to the monitor is fully plugged in and not running past too many electrical cables and picking up interference.

Also check you are getting sufficient cooling through your case (are old IDE cables obstructing airflow etc?)

Make sure you have flashed your motherboard's BIOS to the latest version.  Many later versions improve AGP support and this may help your video card problem.
