Title: Might need a new Router
Post by: Anonymous on September 17, 2004, 08:39:41 PM
I currently have  linksys BEFSR41 that has given sterling service for the last year or two. However, over the last couple of weeks the DHCP lease has not been getting renewed and I do not know if it is the Router or Blueyonder. I have put the latest formware on the router to see if that fixes the problem (I know it kills playing CS but I'm not in a CS mood just now anyway - I just need to fix my network)

In case the firmware upgrade doesn't cure this problem what are peoples recommendations for a new router? It has to meet the following requirements:

Cable not ADSL
I have to be able to redirect incoming traffic to various IP addresses
I want it to support SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) so I don't have to open ports for outbound traffic
Must have a minimum of 1 x RJ45 on the WAN side and 1 x RJ45 on LAN side. If it has an inbuilt switch then fine but I don't need it (I have another switch)
It should block all incoming by default
It should support NAT
I only need to support about 6 to 10 internal IPs so being able to support huge numbers of users is not a necessity
I don't need/want wireless (I've got a good quality 3com AP)

So, any comments or thoughts?

With luck the firmware will fix the prob but just in case I'd like to plan ahead a bit.

Thanks in advance. :D

Look at the Vigor 2600+ range, they do all of the above AFAIAA.
I own two and they are most excellent :D

Seems to be ADSL only from what I can see :(

Shame because the specs seem superb :)

Totally unrelated but almost everytime i leave my computer for more than 20 mins it stops resolving dns's when i return and try to view webpages.  The only way i can clear this is to either go into my router and force it to do a disconnect and then reconnect OR by doing a ipconfig /releaseall followed by ipconfig /renew, without doing either of those it just will not see webpages.  It's fine if i sit here and am actually doing something on it as this only happens if i leave the pc unattended for 20 mins or more.

Any clues you big blue network guru?

Is your PC set to do "Power Saving"? It could be powering off the connection to your router when inactive?

After much web surfing and reading in forums I have plumped for this one from Zyxel (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ShopGroupID=12&CategoryID=2&ProductID=1090&Title=ZyXEL%20Prestige%20334%20VPN%20Broadand%20Router)

Not for the faint hearted but seems to have a loyal following (and support people that support)

If it isn't power saving have a look here (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1203/) as this may help?

Cheers mate. Appreciate the offer. I did consider getting another one (thats what I have at the moment) but I decided not to. My reasons are:

1. Linksys do not seem particularly interested in the fact that with firmware newer than 1.45.7 you cannot play CS for longer than 30 seconds before you get dropped from server.
2. The ability of the BEFSR41 to host an FTP server behind it is laughable. No matter which FTP server or how you configure ports and passthrough you cannot run the FTP server in PASV mode (you have to go with PORT mode) . Linksys don't seem too bothered about that either.

Everything I read suggests that Zyxel do a good job of supporting their users so I decided to jump ship.

Its a shame coz the BEFSR41 has the potential to be a stunning router but the company don't seem to want to fix the niggles.

Again, appreciate the offer very kind :D
