hey,
if i bought a new cpu and motherdoard and put my existing hdd's and stuff on it without formatting would it run my current os, that is if all the bios setting were the same? any idea?
cheers guys
Depends on your current OS
If you have win98 then it will plug and play probably although you may be better deleting the PCI bus entry in device manager on old PC before moving HD
If winxp then much more involved - look here (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=418&page=5) for more info
I've just done the same on the morning of the LAn...and not by choice either ;)
Under normal circumstances I would have backed up, formatted and reinstalled witout a thought. However that wasn't an option at a LAN, and so I've had to run a new CPU, RAM and mobo on an existing XP Home installation at the LAN. Initially Windows XP wouldn't even boot but a repair/reinstall to the OS seemed to work fine. Bunged in the new drivers and it ran without a problem right across the weekend. So the arguement for formatting by default doesn't appear to be totally cut and dried.
Try it and see :)
sounds ok to do, now i got to save up for a new motherboard and cpu
thanks for help guys

Format and re-install last night
