is it necessary to update? I think my copy of f@h has been running as a service for many months now, probably a good 2 versions out of date (i.e. v3...) and I seem to recall someone said it could be made to run as a service without extra tweaking now?

You don't need to update, but they're always looking to improve the performance and stability with the newer clients and the Windows console version lets you install as a service without the effort required before v5.  I've updated all of my borged machines (the ones I can find anayway).

...and don't forget that if you need to alter any settings you can run:

 "fah502-console -configonly"

to update your config file.

Ok i have tried a number of times to install this on my pc but i am having issues. Firstly i install the folding client and type in my details and get it to run from startup. However each time i start up it comes up then disappears and i can never find it apart from it supposibly folding in the background as it is displayed in taskmanager. This is not the case as my folding score has never increased and since a reformat of my pc i still can't get the client to work any ideas? Or shall i just go for the buggy graphical version?

Thanks

What makes you say the Graphical version is buggy?  It has a slightly higher overhead on resources but other than that it does the job nicely (V5.03).  The best option for me is to use the console version and configure it as a service, just run it from the command prompt with the -configonly flag (as Blueball stated) and it should run fine and as it's a service will restart automatically when you restart your PC.

Just a possibility - check there are not several version running at the same time.  How many instances of FAH can you see in your Task manager?  If there are several then uninstall them all and once the system is clean then do a single install of the console and runit as a service.  There's nothing wrong with the console or grpahical versions - it sounds to me like an incorrectly configured install running that is therefore not registering your WUs.  Finally, once your ocnfig is setup - try to make it read only - just to make sure the settings are not lost.

Mmmmm, I jus tinstalled this on a new machine using the v5 code and I still get the window showing for the console version even though I said run as a service.  Did I miss something?

I usually run -configonly the first time as if you run config and select to run as a service it will run interactively until the next reboot.

It sometimes crashes between downloading WU's, only issue ive seen so far, seems a tiny bit faster then the older version (guessing its supposed to be that ;) )
now testing with the  -forceasm -advmethods to see if there is any improvement or if they implemented it into std options now
