I had to replace my mobo on the morning of the dMw LAN and the only type I could get my hands on at such short notice was the Gigabyte K7 Triton Nforce2.
Once back home and post a reformat I started bunging in some old games. And it seems that some games that use Safedisc anti-cracking software won't play with the Nforce mobo. The problem is with the crappy Safedisc system but the symptoms are that the disc isn't recognised as being in the drive when I start the game, even though it's safely in the drive.
I've updated to the latest Nvidia drivers, tried both the DVD drive and the CD-RW drive, run a Microsoft patch that actaully fixes a problem where Safedisc wouldn't work unless the game was played in the Administators account and mucked about with the optical drive transfer modes (DMA2 and PIO). But still these games won't work.
They are Sim City 4, a Sold Out cheapo release of Tomb Raider Chronicles and a wierd game called In Memoriam. I've Googled this all day but no one seems to have any new ideas, other than those mentioned above and already tried. It goes without saying that Safedisc won't even admit to their grubby piece of software being borked and likewise Nvidia have no comment.
Anyone else come across this problem, and it's a stretch, but anyone got a solution (DON'T suggest a No-Cd hack!)
