when i join a server i loose all sound..but not when using other applications/software .etc.
any ideas???

I assume this relates to CS 1.6? If so, I think I remember a conflict with Audigy sound cards and any sort of non PS2 mouse drivers? Have you changed mouse, sound card or drivers for either recently? This was a while back, so I'd be suprised if it hasn't already been fixed and is therefore not your problem :(
