hello sure one of you brainy guys can help. I had a harddrive go and have bought a new 200gb one. when i boot from the xp cd to install it is only registering about 130gb. any one know what i do next?
mmm just discovered xp pre service pack 1 is limited to 137gb max

Create a primary partition with fdisk (if you already have one delete it then create one ...make sure to to delete the non-dos partition which is created with XP)
And then format.
That should do it unless some brainy comes along to tell you how to do it properly :D
You could also do a quick search here on these forums as this problem has been discussed at length and solved several times already. There is a mine of information on here if you are willing to look........

Another thing make sure you have the latest bios for your mb, and some mb's don not support large hard drives.

Indeed xp home as a operaing system did not come out with compatibilty with over 130gb hdd. Therfore this has been updated with various service packs. first sp1 which allowed the idea of a over 130gb hdd. However some ppl still ahve these including my self who has an old 2.0ghz dell computer. Please don't laugh ;) Ok so sp2 came out and this still didn't sort out my woes. If sp2 or sp1 do not solve your problems onion you must therefore find out whether your motherboard can cope with 48-bit support. Without this your motherboard will not recognise the full capacity. I bought a raid card which has 48bit support to bypass the motherboard which plugs into a pci slot. I am not sure if it works but as i am still having woes with my floppy disk drive to enable me to install the drivers i will not know for sometime. These only cost about £20 and are cheaper than forking out for a new motherboard and processor that do support this. Please let me know how you get on.
i have got it working fine now :D once i got service pack 2 installed, the xp disk management program could see the remaining 60 gb that pre sp1 setup could not see. i then used this program to partition and make usable that 60gb.
