Title: Which coffee maker should I get?
Post by: suicidal_monkey on December 09, 2004, 05:29:21 PM
Right, I'm after a desktop filter coffee solution for my other half and I've kind of narrowed the options to 2 choices...

Russell Hobbs 10881
pic: http://www.tescohs.co.uk/images/elec/large/705851.jpg (http://www.tescohs.co.uk/images/elec/large/705851.jpg)
Makes two 400ml mugs(two insulated s-steel mugs included as pictured) but might be a little big too large for use in an office environment? That's my main concern. £20
Pros: makes a decent amount of coffee, includes nice insulated mugs to keep it hot, don't have to clean it immediately after brewing.
Cons: Perhaps too big? Might not be welcomed to the office by her work room-mate, have to carry the filter to a sink/bin without dripping somehow to clean.

Whittards Mug-filter thing
pic: can't find one
Makes a single cup of coffee. The device essentially consists of a container into which you pour boiling water. This drains slowly through the coffee grounds, straight into the mug. £7-£10
Pros: Very compact, can use any mug, won't get in the way at work at all.
Cons: Might cool too fast, have to deal with the filter bit immediately after brewing and probably have to do so in the kitchen.

Opinions?

Right as I'm The Coffee Daddy I'll give yoy the answer. Get the Whittards one.

They Whittard doesn't use papers, it has a perminent filter and all it needs is a rinse out after it's been used. The Russell Hobbs is just a very poncy way of doing the same thing. If she drinks coffee two big mugs at a time then fair enough  ;)  Most people go one cup at atime and for that the Whittard is nice simple and easy. The Russell Hobbs is a gimmick. IMHO

For what it's worth it's no gimmick to simply take a paper filter out of the machine and ditch it. On the other hand getting rid of coffee grounds from plastic filters is a royal pain in the bottie. £20 for Christ's sake! Get a proper coffee maker. I've been the 'cafetierre route and I would not go that way again. Real coffee, perking away has a certain...............niceness.

A real filter coffee maker is indeed a superior choice.  But using paper filters is an absolute sacriledge.   ;)

Unfortunately most real coffee makers don't fit on office desks covered in papers, files and bits of computer, and there aren't always readily available hotplates for percolators, so I'm hunting down something nice that is desktop friendly. The bigger machine has a plastic filter, so no messing about with papers, but I'm thinking the little mug-top one is probably the best bet for where it is to be used. I'm simply getting opinions and you lot are usually pretty opinionated :winkiss: sometimes requires a little prodding but once the dam breaks... ;) Once I've listened to all the valid arguements I'll decide to do the opposite and choose wrong no doubt

Plastic's the stuff then eh?   . Monkey I reckon the thing you're looking for is Nescafe instant. No room needed, no mess, no bother, no taste

Get the whittards. Wider choice of product, including self roasted and ground (try it sometime) of whatever you feel like. How long have pods been in their little HEV suits for? How fresh are they?
Try roasting and grinding your own. From green to cup in under an hour, it almost fizzes in the mug.
Nothing wrong with a cafetiere, gives a more robust flavour that a filter brew and is better suited to a strong cuppa rather than a keep warm filter pot.
Or spend £400 on a top end espresso robot for the higher octane moments.

Way to go! Unfortunately there is space (small table) to take into consideration, otherwise...

I voted "The Big 2x400ml one (Russell Hobbs 10881)" as it had the word big in it!

Nice one. A man with the proper priorities in life. You'll go far. Tip: The other word to look out for is 'expensive'

For convenience, space and really low maintenance you simply cannot beat pods.

Find someone with a Senseo and taste the stuff. How else can you judge it?

I would agree with doorman. the cafeteria is the way to go for normal coffee. i have a single cup one and it is as easy as making a cup of instant coffee. the problem i see with the pods is choice and cost. but it all depends on how fussy you are. but the daddy of all coffee is espresso. I got myself a good espresso machine as a wedding present this year. and now a couldn't live without it. but i still go back to my little cafeteria every morning for my first caffeine hit.

Aren't currys or someone knocking the twin mug thing out for a tenner now?
Title: Which coffee maker should I get?
Post by: Liberator on December 12, 2004, 09:08:40 PM
Just looked at their website and Yup they are now less than a tenner.

Also I was doing a bit of investigation into the Senseo as well, but the fact that you have to get the ready made 'pods' and can't use your own ground coffee put me off a bit.....

There are plenty of 'pods' available, but as stated earlier, you can't beat freshly ground beans.

Then I found this (http://www.cafe-filter.nl/Home_NL.asp?Lang=EN) and thought you 'Senseo' owners might be interested.

I think I might have to invest in one now!

:D the coffee conundrum!

On the senseo&pod-front... I have tried the Nescafe pod-type coffee. It was pretty decent, but the pods (and the pod-machines) aren't cheap (especially considering they're not much more than glorified kettles with capsules of coffee paste :winkiss: ) and they're still pods. Being able to choose your own fresh coffee is still the way to go! Theres a nice littel stand at borough market from a company called monmouth. Grind you a bag there and then, though we have a coffee grinder now so we store some of the good stuff in the freezer in bean form...

I think I'll just get both  The Russel Hobbs thing looks great, especially for the price, must remember to look at the water-srip mechanism, as the one on the tiny little single-cup R-H filter machine looked rather dodgy/gimmicky.

We're not quite up the espresso level of coffee-drinking and £400 machines yet  besides the holiday budget has eaten most of the xmas-present budget! I think the next step is possibly a quality machine that does the grinding, filter coffee-ing, espresso and milk-frother things. Perhaps built into the kitchen somewhere... (eep  ) ...possibly with an alarm-clock triggered switch (perhaps my electronics degree will cmoe in handy!!! )

p.s. I hope the Nescafe instant comment was a joke! :P

You just need to remember to always have in stock the flavoured syrups to add to the coffee: vanilla, whisky, irish etc.  They ruin the taste of a good coffe, but when you're already hammered and at the end of a long drinking session they go down a storm with the alcohol added.  Just ask anyone who survived the night formally known as the 'dMw Mid-Summer Night's BBQ'  :P

Okay, I know I posted this a few replies up, but here it is again with a better link description!

Device to use your own fresh ground coffee in a pod (Senseo) type machine! (http://www.cafe-filter.nl/Home_NL.asp?Lang=EN)

Kind of negates the "Not much range in coffee!" debate!  :narnar:

Also, I got a "Makro Mail" today and the Senseo's are going to be on sale for £41 and a few pennies (including VAT) from Saturday until Christmas.

Looks like I'll be in line at the local Makro this Saturday!  :D

Although we have drifted away from the "Which one should he get" question.

Oops!

Which one did you get?

So far I have the mug-top one, and am going to hunt down the bigger one in london next week (do't fancy carrying a coffee machine box on the train tomorrow with all the other stuff I have to take!) so am aiming to get both. 8)

p.s. that website link for "own senseo" thingys is taking forever to load (been over 10 minutes now and it's still mainly just red), not very encouraging. Besides, I can pick and choose my own coffee simply by heaping a tablespoon into a filter, and those "permanent" filters are so simple to clean. Why make it more complicated!? :) (granted I can't see the machine you're linking to, but their website is bust, can't be helped!

Strangely enough its a permanent filter for a Senseo!  :D
