Title: How to start a 2 comp line up on internet
Post by: DuVeL on December 16, 2004, 11:30:44 PM
Hi guys (n00b @ this stuff here). My bro was asking me this for the Tournament about setting up @ my house for a connection on my ADSL line and modem to join for the shooting.
So here are the questions:
1) How does he need to connect his machine to the modem (I have 4 slots available for direct computerlines wire okay but can it be put in directly?)
2) Do I have to make 1 computer the main computer to login on the internet?
3) Do I have to set IP's for it?
Conclusion, what's the best way to start up. I have never done this before so... HELP!!!

Do you have a router ? ... " 4 slots"

Or do you wish for his computer to leech off your bandwith directly through network cards?

I do have 4 slots yes.
I have a Speedtouch 510/510i router (ethernet).

I did a speedtest and it says:
Direction------Actual Speed----------------True Speed (estimated)

Downstream--938 Kbps (117.3 KB/sec) --1013 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream------295 Kbps (36.9 KB/sec)-----318 Kbps (inc. overheads)
That's with F@H on and a few other things.

What do you recon? Can my router hold it up for the Tournament without any really laggy bits?

You need about 3.5kb/sec per person for counterstrike so you have enough bandwidth for about 8 people.

You should be fine

Thanks BB!

And Red (or anyone else), I can just plug his wire that comes from his networkcard in my router and game on?

as long as your router is acting as a DHCP server (which it probably is) then he will get a valid IP address when he plugs in and turns on.

I don't know about that BB but I think it's fine. We'll try it out a few days before the tournament.

Another question:
How does it work with the settings on his computer or can he just put the cable in and play with his settings? He has the same provider as me so i'm hoping it's not a problem.

basically he should tell his network card to use DHCP and pretend he is on a normal network. Everything should just work!

Bedankt in ieder geval!

A literal translation comes up with: (for Duvel)
Ice, according to BB and save I must firstly look at if an direct connection works. The direct connection takes place on the router therefore if I have to it well hoef I no real have LANverbinding. I look at soon, however, ff. thank in any case!

:D

haha

They say the same as i do.

And what i mean by your lanconnection that is what the other pc will say when the cable is connected.

Where can I find out if it finds the DHCPserver?

I've connected my brothers computer to the Router aswell by a network cable and now I'm trying to get it to work (not getting it to work though.....)

Whats make and model of router? Then we can investigate a bit :D
Assume both comps are on xp?Normally running the  network wizard is all that is required, most of the time it doent even need to.If cable is suspect swap with yours,as I assume yours is working  through router?

I have a Speedtouch 510/510i router (ethernet).
Both comps have XP yes.
Cable is brand new.

My computer is attached to the router and my bro his computer is attached to the router by a different cable on another slot.
Internet seems to be working now but I can't get on Steam.

Control panel, windows firewall.switch it off while you try it.It defaults to block everything that isnt in the exceptions list. If you click exceptions tag it shows what it allows.

k m8, I've done that.
Now he gets this:
Your Steam ticket has expired.
Please re-enter your password to continue.

So I now leave it to him what he should do.

Thanks Norm and the others I've asked!

BTW, I can't connect through the online mode but when I try to do it through offline mode I can see who's playing on the server and so.
Steam and Halflife arn't blocked by the SP2antiviruswall.

I think I've discoverd the problem, it wasn't his SP2 firewall but the normal one he had installed. Somehow it messed things up.
