I know a group of about 8-10 people who've just been doing the beta and are definitely getting it...

I'm resisting it on the basis that I don't have enough time to make it worth the monthly fee, ...adn that I should spend less time on my PC as it is

I'm installing it as we speak. It might be worth agreeing on a server that we should all use.

I'm keen to go for a Uk based role play one. Anyone signed up yet? or am I blazing the trail?

Gender bending here we come  ;)

You won't be posting anything mate. The account creation servers are down due to the demand. So no one can sign up for an account at the moment.

Not a very auspicious start. Are Blizzard affiliated to Valve at all ?    <_<

You can only party up with the same race, so make sure you decide whether or nto to be Human or Horde.

I'm thinking aobut biying it, but tbh I can;t be TANGO'd to pay £8.95pm to play a game that I would have already bought.

I'm on one of the role play servers Argent Dawn or some such. I've been trying out a few characters but haven't settled on one yet.

Sadly i can't seem to access either the WOW web site or the game. Not a very clever start for all the beta testing they did

Let me know how you get on with this one bud - if it looks like a goer then I'll buy and sign up to the alliance.  Definitely think RPing is the way to go after the galaxies experience.  You tend to get a more serious and mature audience.

Don't they have PvP, RP, and normal servers for Europe?
Title: world of warcraft
Post by: 0ni0n on February 13, 2005, 04:29:31 PM
yep most of us are on normal where i think you can set if you want pvp for your charactor or not. i personally find these games pointless if there is no pvp even though i rarely tend to kill.
Title: world of warcraft

Whats ever1 else's name's?

And were are you on the on the server the left of right island?
Title: world of warcraft
Post by: smilodon on February 13, 2005, 06:43:50 PM
In a nutshell you have PvP servers where you have contested areas. Here you play normal quests etc but if you meet players from the other side they are free to attack you and vica versa. There are still plenty of safe areas where you can quest without being attacked by real players

You have normal servers where you ca only fight players by mutual consent. For example we could all agree to meet up at some location and then all turn on PvP and set too.

Finally you have RP servers which are normal servers except role playing is the norm. The RP servers attract a more mature bunch and it's much easier to set up quick groups for quests and trading stuff etc.

I'm running one of each race on the RP server Argent Dawn (which is nearly full!)

So far

Level 7 Night Elf Hunter
Level 5 Gnome Rogue
Level 5 Human Paladin
Level 3 Undead Mage
Level 2 Troll Shaman

Not started
Tauren Druid
Dwarf Warlock
Orc Warrior

So far I'm  thinking about sticking with The Elf, Human and Gnome. The dwarf is not much different from the gnome, the undead and the troll are to dark and grim to be much fun (as I suspect will be the Orc)  and I haven't tried the Tauren yet. In fact the gnome is the best fun of the lot so far. Sneak about in the dark and stab folk in the ankles!

As to how it plays...it's still mainly about creating a character and leveling up by questing.
It's just that it's so immersive. The world is realistic in a cartoony way (if that makes sense?), the quests all fit together, leveling is more a natural consequence of living and questing in the WOW world rather than some mad dash for XP points. It looks stunning, doesn't lag at all, and has a money system that allows for some basic trades and the ability to earn a reasonable amount of cash without it getting in the way of playing. It doesn't take over the game and allow for vast wealth to be accumulated. About the only thing that costs real money are the mounts (horses etc). Other than that you just need cash for armour, swords and the like.

Chimpy if you like the idea of a Galaxies without a huge tech tree or a vast economic system that is more quest and group centred and has far less game spoiling tactics like corpse looting, spawn camping, grinding etc. then WOW is a good bet. For me it's everything Galaxies isn't.
Title: world of warcraft
Post by: smite on February 13, 2005, 08:47:52 PM
For somebody who hasn't played these games before i am well impressed. I started to get into Knight On-line but WOW blows it out of the water.

Graphics Good.
Sound Good.
Gameplay Good.
Learning level Good.

Time usage NOT Good.

Smilo you do have the option to decline a PvP whenever requested.
Title: world of warcraft
Post by: smilodon on February 13, 2005, 09:36:32 PM
Yep I know. Frankly I just like teaming up with folk and going on quests. The idea of fighting other players, unless it was in some kind of huge battel, doesn't appeal that much.

I'm down to a Paladin Human woman and a Night Elf Hunter man from my originl eight characters.  The gnome was fun but I can't really play three characters and do them all juctice.

I didn have a very quick look at  Knights Online and they are in diferent leagues, but KO is free and WOW costs £8 a month, so it's hardly suprising.

Post by: smilodon on February 14, 2005, 01:02:55 PM
We're all going to end up on different servers I can tell. I'm steering clear of PvP servers at the moment. To be honest I'm really getting hooked on the co-operative questing rather than troll bashing. RP severs allow for quicker grouping IMHO than do normal servers. Still each to their own.

On a related note I'm not actually getting much play at all. Right now (as I wait for the AA to come fix my sodding company car    ) I can neither get on the server nor access the WOW web site ( http://www.wow-europe.com (http://www.wow-europe.com) ). Is it me or is the system being very flakey? I did get on briefly but had real lag. When I disconnected and reconnected it wouldn't work for me  :(

If you like you can join up with my "other" clan-mates from downgraded (http://www.downgraded.net), who have laregely migrated to WoW as their main game of choice. Got 2 guilds going on a PvE (non-PvP) server called DOOMHAMMER. I'm avoiding getting the game myself as I haven't the money to spend on it and could really use the time for some other things (notably a few other games I have yet to complete! :D )

Anyway, if that sounds like your cup of tea, pop on over to our forum (http://www.downgraded.net/phpBB2/index.php) and say hi. If of course dMw starts up it's own litte guild then I'm sure there's some sort of way that guilds can aid eachother in the game anyway?

Aguild would be a gool idea. Only I don't think we'll ever agree ona server  :)

Plus I don't much fancy loosing my Level 10 paladin or my level 7 hunter  :(

Still I'll go with the flow. We need 10 people and a bundle of cash to do it.
Title: world of warcraft

how  much does it cost to play
Title: world of warcraft
Post by: smilodon on February 14, 2005, 07:08:06 PM
The game costsa bout £30  and it's £8 ish a month from then on.

The idea behind the monthly charge is based on

cost of maintaining the servers
development of new original content (new quest, land, features)
in game staff thee to help out and or resolve disputed

Seems a fair price to me.

I woder if I am alone in getting horrible problems accessing either the servers or the //www.wow-europe.com web site?

Since last night I've been getting pings of upto 4000 and rarely less than 400. The euro web site seems to be down as well. Is it just me or is the whole WOW Euro system falling over?

My mate who shares the same ISP as me can't see the web site. However my dad who's on NTL cable can see the site but gets a message saying it's being taken off-line due to huge demand. All very confusing, but I assume it's not something with either my PC or my ISP?

Anyone having problems?

I was gonna buy WoW, but I just can't bring myself to pay a monthly subscription for a game, I think I'll wait for Guild Wars to come out & I might check that out instead - http://www.guildwars.com/ (http://www.guildwars.com/) for anyone who fancies a look.

Post by: 0ni0n on February 15, 2005, 07:45:14 AM
Riz the way i see it is whats £8 a month! 3 pints, and if i dint have a decent game like this to get into, where you can play for months if not years and keep going back for more i would be spending £35 a month on a new game i get bored of. Bargain i recon :D

smilo had no probs getting on server cant get on account or web from menu though.

regarding pvp enabling and general guide line read p130 of manual for me the normal pve/normal server are far to limiting with regards to pvp. You are basically down to asking someone for a duel which they can see you are a higher level and decine or see you are lower and kick your butt!! whats the point...far better to have the safe, contested and enermy zones like in pvp servers. obviously this is my point of view as i like abit of pvp it adds to the experience.

cheers

I thought it was the PvE servers where you had safe, contested and enemy zones? If you are foolish enough to wander into the enemy cities you can be attacked... There's battlegrounds on the PvE servers which gives you the option of straying into a PvP area -if-you-want-to but allowing you to actually play the game without fear of some  bast. 20 levels above you deciding he's bored and flattening your ass while you're innocently trying to do some quest or other! PvE sounds a bit more like TCS-mentality, and PvP a public-server mentality?

no thats pvp and the only way some harder person can attack you in pvp is if you are in contested or enermy lands if you are in your own realm you have to attack first :D this is simular to 'dark age of camalot' pve is more like everquest

That's what I thought it was monkey:
PvE - no pvp apart from in contested zones (specific bounded areas of the world where pvp is enabled.  The side controlling the zone gets certain benefits like you would in battlefield or battlefront).  They had a similar idea to this at the start of SWG, but they never got it to work properly  :(
PvP - an open free-for-all where evil versus good pvp could take place anywhere anytime.

Thats what I though the difference in servers was tbh, with RP being specifically orientated towards role playing.

Did I misunderstand?
Title: world of warcraft
Post by: smilodon on February 15, 2005, 09:26:09 AM
On normal servers (PvE), you can enter into player-versus-player combat by storming enemy capitals, entering special PvP zones called battlegrounds, or by attacking the guards in enemy cities. In all cases, you have a choice to engage in PvP combat or not. You can duel with anyone, including your own race or even guild anywhere you like, aslong as both parties agree. Several guilds encourage dueling as part of their activities.

On PvP servers, there are many zones that are flagged as contested territory. In these zones, players from opposing factions can attack each other freely i.e. you can't decline a fight. Thus, you could be fighting monsters by yourself, only to be killed by a stealthed enemy rogue. PvP servers also enable PvP combat through Battlegrounds, attacking enemy guards, and entering enemy capitals. These contested zones include quest areas, so in order to advance a player you will have to enter these zones to complete quests and level up.

Personally I like the idea of PvE servers and the battlegrounds they include. It allows for questing without having to fight real people and also battlegrounds where guild wars and the like can take place. You get the best of both worlds here.

I never took part in much PvP stuff, but alot of the problems arise when u are fighting monsters and after a close won battle u get ganked by the "stealthed rogue", who was waiting for you to be low on health befor attacking.

But then you go get you guild mates and go take revenge on the lowely coward.

Im so tempted by this game now :D

Sadly all we to do now is live through all the teething troubles that come with new MMORPGs. I and most of Stormwind City have just been dumped rudely of the server. Fortunatley I was just setting up a camp fire to cook my first fishing success. Oh and I'm in a Guild, or at least I've signed up to one.

I'm level 17 now and have a speciality in leatherworking so if you need +8 armour patches applying i can toughen up what you're wearing.

I also pick up some tasty weapons/armour/wands/blueprints.......let me know what is good for you and i'll sort you out if i can.

Message me in game ( on Argent Dawn server ) by adding me to friends and we can help each other out.

Yeah come on over to the Argent Dawn server mate - much better audience and more folks are more group orientated.  Plus they speak dead funny olde worlde stuff ;)

We're all still early in the game so move to Argent Dawn now before you get too attached to your toon - would make sense if we stuck on the same server and got guilding.

Niel - I'll message you on sunday when I'm back on.  Feel free to add me ("Jahred") to your friends list (I've added you) and I'll call on you soon to cadge some gear ;)

Ditto re Argent Dawn. Sadly I'm already in a Guild but I'd resign to sign up to a dMw version.

Also sadly I had to kill off my level 12 Druid. I got her stuck in a map flaw and Hearth-stoning back to my Inn meant I lost the ability to continue her training as I couldn't get back to Moonglade. So I started again  :(

I've not seen any Horde players so far, but when I was trying out the races there seemed to be shed loads of Undead, Tauren and Orcs. I think the Tauren are one of the more popular races. The gnomes and trolls are underepresented.

To be honest on a Role Play server I doubt it would make a lot of difference until you were very high level and fancied your chances in an enemy land.

AFAIK the popularirty goes like

Night Elves
Humans
Taurent
Dwarves
Undead
Orcs
Trolls
Gnomes

I suggest you take a look at

WOW Europe (http://www.wow-europe.com/en/)
WOW Net (http://www.worldofwar.net/)

One of the most important things I've learnt is that to enjoy the  game the most you need to explore and quest. Treat the game like a game and not like a mad rush to get the highest level character you can and it will play much better. The game designers have worked very hard to make leveling up is just a natural consequence of playing the game and not something you want to be conciously trying to achieve. Take time to enjoy the extraordianry depth of the world and what's going on in it. Everything links together and the unfolding narative is a delight.

I, Neil and Chimpy play on the Argent Dawn server which is a role play server. It's a laugh, adds some authenticity and role players seem very keen to help out each other. It's tough to complete many quests on your own and the only sure way to do it is within a group (a band of players who group together to attempt a quest together and share the proceeds). Role players seem more likely to help each other out IMHO.

Something to note though is if you want to meet up with us you should join the alliance side (Human, elf, dwarf or gnome). If you go for the horde (Tauren, Orc, Troll or Undead) we'll probably never meet, except in battle :-)

So Argent Dawn, Alliance and then what ever you want to be.

two more qustions

i have been reading on the forums about wait time to get on the Servers. is this true and how bad is it? and after playing KO for a bit i'm used to being dumped off the  server every 10 minutes. Tell me the WOW serves don't do the same?

There are some popular servers that have queues to get onto them, basically they are full. There are loads that don't though and Blizzard (the game developer) have already opened about half a dozen new servers. When you log on for the first time the game will suggest a low population server for you to join. Assuming you want to pick your own server (Argent Dawn?) you just select it from the server list and create your character for that server ignoring the suggestion.

On the left of the login panel is a list of high population servers that Blizzard suggest you don't create characters on (it's also on their web page. Argent Dawn has never been one of them though. I have never had a problem getting onto the server, except for some grief I had with my badly configured NAT router. I really don't imagine you'll have a problem  :)

I'd second that - this is not a "grind" game like SWG.  There's too much to do :)  Forming groups is easy on a RP server and really adds to the experience.  If you want to solo (1) get used to dying a lot (2) you're missing out on a lot of fun.

Just get Niel to help you out and upgrade your armour ;)

I sat down at 10am to play yesterday and left the computer at 6.30pm.  Now my back hurts and I'm developing carpel-tunnel :(

Can everyone that is on Argent Dawn please tag their Character name on here.

At the moment it's difficult for most of us to team up because of level differences but we can sure as hell help each other out with items/upgrades.

My own personal gift is that everyone can have free armour upgrade patches that i can make ( currently i can add +8 to the armour value of Chest/Leg/Hand and Foot armour .....gives you an extra +32 to the rating ). I will soon be able to make +16 patches.

So....add your name and via the game mail system i'll post you 10 free armour patches.

I have a level 6 warrior, named Armitage on the argent dawn server.

I'm in the Goldshire at the moment. and spend a lot of time in the lions pride public house. (not a great surprise)

any low level characters not been in the fargodeep mines. give me a shout. i need some help to explore it.

as for the game WOW is the word. you can see what you are paying for. graphics are awesome. and the depth of gaming is incredible, even after playing for one day . I have interacted with more NPC's and been on more quest than all my time on KO. So if you like KO, go buy this game. and for £2 a week. I don't think you'll  regret it.

I was playing last night......looked t my watch.....11:30pm......next thing i know it was 4am.. This game is ruining my life and i havn't even had it a week yet.

If anyone has the ability to add extra damage to weapons then please contact me.....you're about to be my new best friend  :D

PS.....not sure if any of you are any where near going into the deadmines........but when you do...go well prepared and mob-handed.........there's a lot of "Elite" baddies down there and you soon find out the difference between a lvl 20 and a lvl 20 Elite..........evil buggers with a bad case of PMS.

The best bit is that you enter an "instance" .....i'e. your group passes into a section of map that is yours alone.......anyone else going the same way gets their own version of it........so there'll be no random strangers helping out as they pass.

Bloody brilliant game and addictive as hell.

Lvl 22 and rising :)

I'm moving steadily forward myself. Now a level sixteen druid. I'm completing tasks that will allow me to take on the Aquatic form so I can swim and fight underwater indefinately. A simple soul at heart I have professions in Herbalsim and Skinning. I'm a competent first aider and cook, but don't appear to know one end of a fishing pole from the other.

My Tauren Hunter also has achieved a landmark as I now have my first pet, a wolf called 'Dog'.

On a related note I'm coming over to the Eastern Kingdoms soon, Westfall to be exact, as part of a quest set by my druid master. So I might try to catch up with some of you if I can.
